Quite job, pack stuff, and leave the country?
I'm 22, work in the City of London (earning good money), but getting fed up with the same old boring routine day in, day out.
I'm seriously contemplating packing everything up, handing in my resignation at work, and heading across the other side of the world. Start a fresh. Start from scratch. Take a risk. Have an adventure.
There are three countries I am, and would, only consider; Australia, America, or Italy. The latter being a language barrier, but would soon pick up.
Anyone else done this? What are your opinions on it?

Do it man, you're young, this is the time, take a risk. It just gets harder when you're older. I wouldn't worry about the language wherever you go. Don't know about Italy's economy, think its not so hot right now. I've only been to northern Italy and it is beautiful, the women are hot and the lifestyle is heaven.
Consider Spain too. US would be the last in that last, tho the language wouldn't set you back at all and girls seem to dig you brits here.

I did it. I'm the same age as you.
Actually i started a similar thread: I'm delivered!!!
My opinion is Absolutly do it. Specially if you don't have to sustain a family or whatever. You and I being from Europe have a lots of countries to choose. We're lucky. We don' need stupid visas. Go for it. And the languages...don't let those be a barrier to your new life. You'll learn them.
Good luck, man.

The Euro to Pound is pretty poor right now. The dollar to pound is very good. Although it wouldn't make much difference in that sense, as the savings would be converted, and thereafter work would be bringing in the local currency.
I've been to Milan (north) and Rome (central), and Italian women are stunning, oh yes.
And same for American women. They seem like a different species compared to the women over here.

I was born and lived all my live in Barcelona. I know lots of people around the world love this city when they visit it or live here for a short period of time, but 22 years...this city is pure crap, Crapcelona and with this goverment, even more. It gets more and more expensive, more and more overpopulated, dirty, filthy, and is stressfull, polluted, noisy, which makes it even more stressfull and people are just sharp and zombies to others for no reason (to locals).
I've done mini travels (weekends) to different countries to scan how they live or contacted people i know overthere.
My option are different than yours. Mine are Croatia (because i've worked there before, and it was awesome, and still got some contacts), Italy too (language would be so easy to learn for me), Malta (beacause they speak english).
If i wanna get riskier i found out they are looking for spanish teachers in countries like Ukraine, Russia.
But since my objetive is NOT to win money but ENJOY life, i could even work for a minimum salary+housing. Search for those plans. There ar a lot; you can take care of kids, forests, whatever you like. You only have to pay for the plane ticket and thats all.
I'll tell you some thing you can be anywhere: an english teacher, a tourist guide for UK tourists, find a local and start your own buisness selling, doing, importing typical things from your country to you new country, etc.
I haven't found a job, yet. I'm enjoying some freedom months before worring about that. The downside is i'm still in BCN...not for long i hope.
But I tell you the sole fact of quitting that job has made a ridiculous difference in my life. I've gone from hateing life to accepting life and having a true ilusion, new hopes, going deeper into my hobbies...Last edited by Voland; 09-14-2008 at 01:33 PM.

Fantastic story my friend!
I was born in Rio de Janeiro Brazil. Though the city is very beautiful, it is a very dangerous place. It has a very high crime rate, with plenty of murders. At the same time, it is one of the most beautiful places in the world. There is nothing like it really. I attended high school there, and then left at the age of 17 to live with my half-brother in southern california. I just wanted to experience life! I knew i could always go back to Brazil and live a normal life teaching. But i knew i would regret it all my life if i didnt try to make it in America. So far i have met SO many people who are fun and interesting people. This place truley is the land of opportunity!
I feel i made the right decision in leaving my homeland. Though i love it dearly, im glad to be a (new) citizen of this great country.
My advice is go for it, live and learn. Worst comes to worst is you pack up and head home. I think youll find yourself amazed at what the world has to offer.
Best of luck!

Apparently we don't...
Tens of thousands of Iraqis could come to U.S. in '09
By Susan Cornwell 1 hour, 27 minutes ago
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States has surpassed its goal of admitting 12,000 Iraqi refugees this year and expects more, perhaps tens of thousands, next year, the State Department said on Friday.
The United States expects to admit a minimum of 17,000 Iraqi refugees in fiscal 2009, which begins October 1, the department's senior coordinator for refugees said. Thousands more Iraqis and their family members could arrive via a special visa program for people who worked for the United States or its contractors.
"I think you'll see the U.S. government admitting over the course of fiscal 2009 tens of thousands of Iraqis into the United States," coordinator James Foley told reporters.
Up to 3,000 could come from Baghdad, where the United States launched interviews this year, he said.
So far this year 12,118 Iraqi refugees have arrived and another 1,000 are booked to travel to the United States by the end of this month, when the U.S. fiscal year ends, he said.
This marks a huge leap from just 1,600 Iraqis who were admitted in the previous year, a number that drew widespread criticism from refugee groups who said Washington should do more to help solve a crisis affecting millions of Iraqis since the U.S.-led invasion in March 2003.
But it is still lower than the number some other countries have taken. Sweden, a country of 9 million people, has admitted over 40,000 Iraqis since 2003.
The U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees estimates 2 million Iraqis are living abroad, mostly in neighboring Jordan and Syria. More than 2.5 million are internally displaced.
Foley called on the government of oil-rich Iraq to do more to help Iraqi refugees abroad as well as plan for returning Iraqis by addressing their needs for security, social services and property compensation.
So far, he said, Iraq has only spent about $25 million to help its refugees abroad, and provided about $200 million for an initiative to help returning refugees. The latter amount was "rather small" considering the number of Iraqi refugees and the improving security situation inside Iraq, Foley said.
"One cannot rule out in these situations the possibility that the refugees in large numbers themselves will decide it's time to go back, but will the Iraqi government be ready for that? That's what we have to prepare for I think," Foley said.
The United States spent over $318 million in humanitarian aid for Iraqi refugees this year, Foley said. Washington sought support from other donors, "particularly in the region, not to mention, the government of Iraq itself."
Foley said he was grateful that Syria, a country with which the United States has strained relations, had agreed to a new facility for refugee processing, which would enable Washington to handle larger numbers of refugees.
"Despite the vagaries in our bilateral relationship which all are familiar with, I think we have managed to agree that for humanitarian purposes we will together make this happen for the sake of the Iraqi refugees," he said.
I find America's policies disgustingly despicable...America no longer has an identity and is filled with complete shit.***No source checks!!!***
