How much is a good bottle of aftershave worth?

I'm starting to make it myself (can't stop making stuff) for the retail trade, and have everything almost set, except for buying some product liability insurance, writing up the MSDS info, and figuring out the pricing, which is the toughest part of all this. I have lots of potential customers who really like my stuff wanting to finish up their Xmas shopping, so I gotta set a good price for my stuff . . .

Cost to manufacture an 8 ounce bottle (nice glass bottle, too) is about $7. I use the same raw material as the stuff they sell in the fancy department stores, so it's quality--no artificial anything. Suitable for aromatherapy, if you're into that. No hormone-depleting pthlates or bisphenyl
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phthalate
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bisphenol_A
like the big guys use, just good, solid, old-fashioned goop to make ya smell purty.

    Anyway . . .

I've seen 3.2 ounce bottles go for as much as $300, but it seems that similar stuff usually sells for around $50.
My question is this -- Even if you could buy twice as much product for half the price, and it was something you really liked, would you spend that much $$$?

Just curious about y'all's opinion on prices on aftershaves and colognes & etc.
    -----------------------------------------

Just as a FYI, the main function of aftershave is as an antiseptic. It does for a freshly shaved face what antiseptic does for a scrape or cut. It also makes ya smell good.

Aftershaves are mostly alcohol & water, and about 2% fragrance oils, and generally use light aromas that dissapate quickly.
Colognes are the same, but about 4% fragrance oils, and tend to use a combination of light, medium, and heavy aromas that dissapate at different rates, and keep ya smelling good longer.
Perfumes are the same, but up to about 15% fragrance oils.

My aftershave is the same company/scent as the cologne I wear so there isn't too many scents goin' on. Don't most people do the same?

I just use the regular Old Spice aftershave, and Im sure it doesn't run more than 10 bucks. And it does the job just fine. I couldn't see paying even 50 personally.

Cologne, different story. Spend anywhere from $75 to $150

The problem is pricing aftershave at even $25 really requires some solid marketing.

    men aftershave

Aftershave cologne, more than just a good smell

To shave is not enough, in fact, you need to take some really good care of your skin, and that is precisely what I want you to consider from now on, because I believe that every man has got to look good, right now we are living in a time in which appearances are hugely important, and that is just why you need to look better than your best, and do not worry, it is something really obtainable, you might just need a little bit of guidance into it, and trust me, you will not only look better, you will feel better about yourself and people will let you know. http://www.bestaftershaveformen.com

I am using juicy's new dirty english right now and it was 80 or 90 bucks at nieman marcus. Problem with it is that it doesn't last the whole day. I won't buy it again becasue of it. So I guess make sure yours will last the whole day!

I put a little iso-propyl-OH on the face after a shave sometimes but almost never use aftershave. It makes my skin look oily.

What kind of retail outlets are your targets? I think the demographics of your anticipated outlets will factor massively in your retail price.

i shaved for the first time in 4 months this morning and i had almost no hair, so that gives you an idea of how often i would use aftershave. although i never do....

i agree with the people that said either none, or same smell as their cologne. but i think an 8oz bottle is a bad idea.. if you are trying to appeal to the bigger spenders, smaller is better. think about the cologne bottles you buy, tops is like 5-6 oz, and most people buy small bottles if they haven't used it before. i would think 40-50 for a 4oz bottle would be good, depending on where you sell it. the nicer dept stores and that will be on the cheap side.

also, i'll spend like $80 on a bottle of cologne, but it usually lasts a while.

    here's the basic formula for aftershave . . .

70% denatured alcohol (use the stuff with grain alcohol, not the stuff from the hardware store). In a pinch you can use everclear, but you can't re-sell it, unless you have a liquor license.
1 or 2 % essential oil, depending on what you put in
1% vegetable glycerine (available from the supermarket)
    the rest -- distilled water

some companies add preservatives, which is a terrible idea, because the stuff they ususally use messes with your testosterone and elevates your estrogen levels.

But, anyway, that's the basic recipe for aftershave. It does the same thing for your skin after a shave that a disinfectant does when your kid falls and scrapes his knee . . . plus, it makes you smell pretty . . .

If you want the fragrance to last a long time, you use essential oils that evaporate slowly. That would be stuff like leather, patchouli, sandalwood, vetiver. If you work in an office around grouchy people who hate aftershaves, splash on some citrus fragrances, and by the time you get to work, it'll be gone.
Usually, aftershave and cologne makers will combine citrus (evaporates quickly) with medium range stuff like grass or vanilla or floral scents, with heavier fragrances like leather or sandalwood. The resulting fragrance will change over a day or so.

The difference between aftershave and cologne is an extra 2% of essential oil in the mix, and a little less water or alcohol. Perfume is about 20% essential oil, and the really expensive stuff might use real rose essential oil, which is very expensive (it takes about 6000 lbs of rose petals to get 1 ounce of rose oil).
Cheap stuff uses artificial fragrances and solvents other than grain alcohol (SD alcohol 40b).
    ------

But what baffles me is that the price seems to be dependant on a few things other than the product itself:

    1) the container
    2) where it is sold
    3) who the customer is, and what social caste he's in

It's crazy, but then again, this is America . . .

    weird phobias

Fear of dentist is drilling through

Fear of dentist has got to be one of the most suffered phobias among people. A British study suggested that 4 out of 10 British are afraid of visiting the dentist in one way or another, while an American study claims that it's between 5 out of 10 in their group. That only tells us one thing: Among all phobias and fears, fear of dentist is by far the big winner.

    Drugstore Pharmacy

An Online Drugstore Pharmacy that is of my full safety and acceptance in a Canadian pharmacy which sells meds that are cheap and which always keeps prices at a low cost. I will recommend the use of a pharmacy drug store which is from the internet every time that I have the chance to do so since I know that they will save money in doing so. An online drug store pharmacy is the best way to shop however there are many variations of online drug store pharmacies so you should make sure that you are choosing the best onr for you. So to make your life easier go to an online drugstore pharmacy and get meds in an easier faster way. It is great to shop at a pharmacy drug store.

I use regular gillette or whatever it is. But one time i received a gift that was a shaving kit by art of shaving. The aftershave was about the best thing i've ever used for my skin, made it feel real smooth and look glossy like porcelain. Obviously not the best choice if your going for the brawny guy look, but if you can afford (cause it's quite expensive) i recommend you try it if you're into that shit.

    Canada Generic Viagra

Why is it cheaper to purchase Viagra online? We offer the lowest price available because we are not burdened with the high cost of researching our product, putting it through the process of clinical trials, and obtaining FDA approval. In this manner, Viagra Canada is able to pass the savings on to you.
