Life Decisions......goodbye business
So i've reached a decision about my future i do believe. There were some signs today and i've been thinking all day about it and I'm done with business....yes i love finance and the stock market....but i will never prance around in a suit 10-12 hours a day 5 days a week.
My dream (outside of bodybuilding) has always been of space......that's why I went into engineering in the first place. But it turned out just not being related enough. So now i'm saying to hell with the earnings potentials, I'm going to finish this physics degree and move on to grad school in space sciences / astrophysics. Which will mean moving of course, following finishing this degree here. I love astrophysics and space and always have, so i'm gonna go for it!!!

Do it man. **** earning potential, be happy and do what you want to do. I studied business as well and I'm ready to get out of it as well since working full-time since last may.

Congrats and good luck
I grew up wanting to be an astronaut, closest I came was to become a private pilot.

nothing now, but my first plane was a piper cherokee, then I moved up to a Grumman Tiger, and had a mooney before I stopped flying due to expense reasons and raising my son
someday I will get back to it.....thats my dream

Nice.. I've flown a 152, 172, and a Piper Warrior. Just need to write the Transport Canada test and do my solo flights and I'm done... when I have the time

So what exactly do you want to end up doing in relation to astrophysics and space? Just working somewhere like NASA or actually being an astronaut?
-
02-13-2009, 08:22 PM #11
I wouldn't mind working for NASA i guess. Or private research of some sort. As for actually being an astronaut....i don't know, would i be able to pass all their tests with my muscles?
It'd be pretty friggin awesome to have the gov't call me up and bring me in on something top secret, like a real stargate program!!!

you wouldn't fit in the shuttle....LOLOL

Wow ruhl. I am excited for you bro. I can tell you that being happy is far more profitable in real life than being rich. I am following a dream now too but nowhere near what you aspire to. Go get 'em bro.

Sounds lame to me, but then again I work on Wall Street.
Sucks to be me.

Do it. Follow what makes you happy.

I too, was a engineer major.
I soon switched.
Kick some ass

Im sure theres a ton people who want to be astronauts so youd really have to stand out tog to picked. And to be a pilot 1000+ jet flight hours is a whole lot.
I dont know if other astronauts would appreciate you eating the whole mission's supply of food in like 2 sittings too.

Another plus for the immediate semester.....if i figure out that i wont get thrown out of school or anything for dropping down to 9 hours i'm gonna do that and then i can get a job and be able to concentrate on contest prep much better. Maybe do some GRE prep too since i'll have some extra time.

Some people who earn advanced degrees in physics or other highly quantitative disciplines find jobs in financial engineering. Have you considered this?
Think developing algorithms or models for automated trading systems, or creating complex structured products / derivatives. Very, very lucrative $$$$$$ jobs. When the financial markets recover in a few years, it shouldn't be too difficult to secure one of these jobs if you have the right degree. Some folks have even managed to secure entry-level positions in this field with just a BA/BS.

I can't help but laugh...you do realize this stuff is hard, right? I mean, I've watched you struggle with calc. I don't think your heart is truely in what is involved with this.
Big difference between calculating the vector velocity of a star looking through a telescope, then being an astronaut and having your fat ass shot up into space. Pretty much all astrophysicists are expected to have a PhD and write proffesional publishable papers. And yes, after all that schooling the earnings are low. I've spent my fair share of time in labs, I'll take the suit instead.

We will be waiting for you up here Rulh..................

i well aware of all this Kratos.....but that is one of my biggest passions that's gone unaddressed of late. The calc thing isn't an issue, i know it, it's just been to long since i've had to use it, i need to review it is all. As for earnings....love what you do and money will be there, i've always believed that. And so what it's hard.....looking at the course titles sparks such an interest any amount of difficulty is a moot issue. And i don't have to do this fast and overstress myself...i can still do bodybuilding
that's the lesson...balance in life...nothing to the exclusion of all else

you won't overstress yourself getting your PhD? It's nothing but stress. No, money won't be there no matter how much you love it and yourself. All this work is gvt funded or private university. The pay grade is pretty clear what your earnings potential will be. I think you're just looking to drop your current class load and not thinking about the future.

Oh, come on. Just let the guy follow his dream. Life is miserable.
Its worth being foolish. Some times you can live happier for some months thinking about future projects and changing some things in your life. I'm not trying to be sarcastic. Go ahead Ruhl, there is little to loose, suits will always be there.
