Very Weird Retainer Question...

Alright, I just got my braces taken off on Firday! I had them on for FOUR years!!! INSANE! Anyways, they took the molding of my mouth, and made the retainer, and I have to wear it 24/7 except when I eat.

However, I don't understand why, when I take the retainer out of my mouth...believe it or not, it smells like semen. I swear to God I am NOT fucking around. I don't get WHY it does. I always wash it when I take it out, and after washing it with water and soap, it smells fine, like normal plastic. But like I said, when I take it straight outta my mouth and smell it, smells like semen.

What's up with that? My ONLY guess is it's the chemical mixture of saliva and the retainers plastic that causes this.

This was something I DID NOT want to mention to my FEMALE orthodontist!!!

Anywho...i thought i'd just post that and see what anyone can say

you wear your retainer after having braces? I went through all that stuff and i NEVER wore it and luckily my teeth stayed straight. I really don't know what to tell you.

I still wear mine, if I keep it out for more than 2 days it's tight when I put it back in. I have never washed it with soap and water though, I brush it with toothpaste and a toothbrush every time I take it out. It never smells. Not sure why yours does, but try the brush and paste, and maybe rinsing it with some listerine or something.

Hmmm this is just a completely wild stab here... do you take the retainer out when downing a protien shake?

If not, it might be protien buildup and somehow fermenting or whatever on the retainer? (after all semen is also mostly protien).

Other than that I am completely bewildered...

Not that I can remember So far that sounded like the most plausible reason...but like I said...a little but not all that too much that I can remember.

Hey Ter, one reason for your "odd" smell of your retainer, could lie in an answer we did in a high school science class. One of my teachers asked if we ever got a piece of meat in our teeth, after a few days, to get it out and smell it, and she said it would smell like your bathroom after a nice long dump.. Know what, I tried it and she was right. Smelled like "crap". she then explained how chemicals in our saliva work to break down even items such a meat which are usually digested in our stomachs by heavier acids and such. Saliva, tries to digest that foreign object as well, and because of this, it develps a fowl odor, I mean fowl. This could be the answer you are looking for however, I don't have any definate answers unless while you are sleeping your roomate is doing something sneaky.. LMAO.

You know what...that DOES sound like the best answer I'm guessing it must be related in some way, cause I don't ALWAYS brush my teeth once I eat something, cuz then i'd have to brush like every 2 hours. So it probably is just the food residue left in the mouth...mixed with saliva and the retainer plastic...must smell bad
