CheckDisk won't run

Okay I have been having problems with my Toshiba Satelite, I am running Vista Business.
I try to run the ScanDisk to check for errors and it says ( can not run while drive is in use would you like to schedule next time you restart)
I click yes and it never checks the disk when I reboot.
I have tried it in safe mood also with no luck.
I am dreading reinstalling my entire system, but at this point I have tried pretty much everything, was wondering if any of you have had a problem like this and how you fixed it.

The problems are stated in the first post. C/drive diskscan will not run, and I cant defrag the computer either.

did you try to run checkdisk from command prompt? or maybe you'll have to do a repair install, but you'll keep your settings and junk.

Yes I've tried running it through CMD with no luck,

You need to run it outside of windows

Follow these steps to access the Windows Recovery Environment:

Turn the computer on, and immediately press and hold the F8 key.


After several seconds, the Advanced Boot Options screen will appear.


Use the up and down arrow keys to highlight Repair Your Computer, then press the Enter key.


Accept or change the language and keyboard selections, then click Next.


Use the mouse and keyboard to select your Windows user name from the drop-down list, and enter your Windows password, then click OK.


The System Recovery Options menu will appear. It will include several Windows Recovery Environment options, typically including the following:


Startup Repair
System Restore
Windows Complete PC Restore
Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool
Command Prompt
Toshiba Recovery Wizard

then launch command prompt and run chkdsk /r for a repair

Gave it a shot and it didnt work, this is what it said when typed chkdsk /r

When I do this, the computer schedules the scan for the next time the computer boots, but when I reboot my computer it doesnt run the scan, it does the normal startup.

type in CMD into your start menu and right click and run it as administrator, type in

chkdsk F:

F being the drive your wanting to check

Okay I did this and it started scanning and said




( Errors found cannot continue in read-only mode.)

Try telling it to run for next reboot from dos prompt

command in CMD window

chkdsk /f

(f being the drive letter)

how do I do that? thee is no option on the screen when it stops.
