dude this sucks but you can beat it first the lab will test it and if it is not a narcotics then they will see what it is, but first like you said it is a community car so other have access to it and they also give people rides..
remember they have to prove that it belonged to you and with that many people in your car that is going to be hard to do.....it will be dropped I am almost sure...do not talk to them and wait for the lab results to come back and see where you stand it could be dropped then...if not in court they have to prove it belonged to you and I just dont see that happening..with the information given....
I dont know about cal....but had the same thing happen with me several years back and it got dropped because they cant prove I knew about it....cal is very liberal so you should be good to go..

It's not about who it belongs too, the charge is possession, you are responsible, for anything in your car.
It sucks, but it can't get dropped like that.
a few pills, is not going to be a serious offense, hopfully just a fine/citation. Or maybe the lab won't know what it is, but I'm sure they are going too. Customs always seems to know what they nab from my orders, though their counting seems to be not so good.

I am curious about this.... How does an officer make a probable cause arrest for possession of narcotics when said officer does can not identify the substance. I mean what if they were asprin? Just because they look weird they are narcotics? Did they ID a similar pill in a drug guide, no field narcotics test kit was used right? It just does not sound like PC to me. What was your statement to the officer?
Does anyone know how they can arrest for loose pills that they could not ID? Are pills outside a container in of themselves illegal?

Jamy, take it from a pro brother, wait to see what you are up against before you make any moves. You may not need to anything. it could be altiods or ibuprofren and you would look like a fool hiring an attorney and harrassing them for results. They may never contact you again. Just chill and remember the golden rule, "he who speaks first looses". Once you get results let's game plan.
BTW, whoever said that the cops will search anyway has no clue about our country. The fourth amendment protects the right of every american to be secure in thier personal property papers and effect against unwarranted searches and seizures. Consent or probable cause must be present to warrant the search of anything personal including your pockets. It is a moot point since he consented though.

So... were the pills actually yours? could they infact be something placed in the car by a friend or family member? Do any of them have scripts for anything that they may be?

I am surprised being a law student you let them search your car. Anyway I did some research and it would cost the lab $100 to test for anabolics. I can not see them doing that first off. I'm guessing you will be fine Jamy.

On This point Id have to Disagree with you Brother. Cops will make up a cause. I personally had a gun put in my car. The cop said had they found anything the gun was mine, Since they didnt they let me go.
Cops will do almost anything to keep a collar and make a case. I was searched on an interstate in NC because I had NY plates. They put dogs in my car and searched. Found nothing and wrote me a speeding ticket. No I was not speeding.

Chances are they will test it using a Gas Chromotograph/Mass Spectrometer. That will give them the chemical profile, and usually they are all stored digitally. From that point it would be very easy to determine what it is. However, I still think your chances are 50/50. Also, do not admit to anything on an open public forum like this. You really should not discuss this case with anyone or say anything.
