Why?
Why is it important to have a huge chest, lean abs, veiny forearms, defined shoulder..etc? What is there to gain from having a bodybuilders build?

That a strange question,
Its all down to personal preference, I runner wouldn't want to have a bodybuilders build, but a bodybuilder will

well personaly i aim for it becuase
i LOVE being strong
i like looking healthy,
it gives me pride in my appreance,
it shows all the hard work and time uve put into ur physiqie,
my girlfriend loves it, and i think if she can maintain her great appearance for me then i think its only fair i do the same for her
i like appearing attractive to other women, (gives me a better self esteem)
its great for socialising,
alot of people respect and admire people who dedicate alot fo time and effort into their physique
and theirs nothing better then being able to take your top off with pride

I do all this for me..... I want a big chest because I like it. I've had multiple girls/women tell me not to get any bigger (not that i'm huge by any means) but they thought it would start looking unattractive. Did I stop? NOPE! I'll continue to grow until i've hit the limit of what I can do...... and why do I want to do this - Because it's what makes me happy!
Some people invest their life into making money, some into running, some into partying and having a great time - I happen to invest my life into bodybuilding. I could argue the same point for the guy that cares about nothing else other than money..... why? Why must you have another million in the bank? Isn't the current 50 mil enough? Why keep working?

It's personal preference. I personally am not a body builder. I powerlift for sport (rugby). However, I wouldn't question why a body builder does what he does, just like any mature body builder wouldn't question why I do what I do.
Now and then I see people staring at me, wondering why I feel it necessary to deadlift 500 lbs. I even overheard one guy telling his gf how pointless it was for me to be working out the way I was (I was benching at the time), but then again that guy doesn't know me or what I do.
It's important because thats what the person in question wants. Who is anyone to tell them they are wrong for what they want when it comes to their own body?

Not sure I ever really wanted a bodybuilders body at the beginning. I enjoy training. Eventually I felt it was necessary to look like I train as hard as I do. Thats when diet came into play. The body just happened to follow. I dont just train for size. I train for the feeling.

and for my own pride. I like to think that just maybe one time in my life all the hardwork and deducation will pay off, and bam...a situation that I cant see in the future or predict, such as getting cornered by some guys who want to rape my girl, and I can actually defend her. I know that sounds really far fetched, but who knows maybe mexico will invade california and I will be forced to fight hand to hand combat (only in my dreams) killing mexicans.

Wanted to be just like my dad. Then as I got stronger, I started to feel really good about myself. Now when I go to the gym, lifting weights releases endorphins. Being in the gym and lifting makes me happy. When I am not in the gym, I am always thinking about it. I love breaking personal records. I love it more than sex.
Having a bodybuilder's build is not in my future. But if it was, it would be just a side effect of weight training. Not the motivation for it

Great point.
Do any of you think that it is selfish to spend so much time and often a lot money on our own muscles when the time and money could be spent on something that would help a lot of people? (just a questions, not saying that I believe it)
It's funny how I used to think that I was in it for the girls, but like many of you I've gotten to the point where the girls have told me that I'm too big, but I still want to get bigger.
There's also something to be said for just feeling strong. It gives a nice sense of self confidence.

that can be said to anyone in any instance
e.g bill gates could spend more time helping people then hes does investesting in microsoft and apple
e.g richard pratt could have spent less time with his company virgin, and more time helping other people
e.g a lawyer could spend less time making money, and more time helping the less fortunate who cant afford lawyers
e.g people who spend their time on forums and emailing each other could spend their time helping others
e.g women could spend less time shopping, and more time helping others
e.g men could spend less time on their cars and toys, and more time helping people
what ur saying is we should spend less time on our passion, and more time helping others
in general ALL of society needs to do that, our passion is bodybuilding
other peoples passion may be cars, shopping, working, building etc
everyone has a passion
is it selfish to spend so much time on our passions rather then helping people?
thats debatable, but in the end of the day everybody has a passion
the fact we dedicate so much time to it could be selfish
but if were selfish, then so is the rest of modern society
so its ur choice how you perceive it
i personaly do think its selfish yes, but more people in this forum are part of capitalist economys (america, most of europe, australia, south africe, some of asia, list goes on)
meaning our economys function on the basis everyone does in their own self interests and pursues their own wealth, and through that resources are distributed
so saying pursueing ur own interest like bodybuilding, is like saying capitalism is selfish itself
if that be so, then why are you part of a capitalist economy? lol
ur just being selfish
