DVD drive disappeared.
Hi guys.
My laptop is a Toshiba Satellite... running Vista home edition.
Right now, the DVD disappeared. When a DVD's inserted, the drive door lights up a couple times and then nothing.
No drive is listed under the "My Computer" tab... neither is it listed in the devices.
I read online that installing the Windows service pack 2 would take care of the problem... so I did that just now.
When the installation finished (a couple minutes ago)... i rebooted and went to "My Computer".
The DVD drive was recognized there.
So... i inserted a disk.
As soon as I did, the drive lit up... and then nothing.
Checked the "My Computer" tab... and the drive had disappeared again.
This is frustrating as hell.
Can anyone help me fix this?
Thanks.
The DVD drive

Its an issue with the registry if you feel comfortable doing it yourself the keys are
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}]
"UpperFilters"=-
"LowerFilters"=-
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Cl ass\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}]
"UpperFilters"=-
"LowerFilters"=-
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet003\Control\Cl ass\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}]
"UpperFilters"=-
"LowerFilters"=-
If you wanna download something to click on to do it for you then download this and run it http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts_d...cd_dvd_fix.htm
If it is still not showing up after running this reg fix than its going to be a bad drive.

Hm.
I tried this previously... some months back when it happened. (prior to service pack 1)
It didn't work... but I'll try it again. Maybe the conditions are different at this time.
Thanks for your input Bryan.
Good to see you're around still.
Will report in as to whether this works or not.

Sorry for the delay in responding.
It's an internal drive (on my laptop), and I'm not sure I can comfortably take the laptop apart to try the drive on another machine.
I've taken my desktops apart numerous times to replace stuff and fix stuff... but this laptop is another animal to me. I watched my tech-guy take it apart a couple times to clean it and what's not... and it gave him stress to do so. The build doesn't appear logical

Follow instructions and I am pretty sure you will get it back. Just happened yesterday when doing a house call for a customer and they had the exact same vista system you have.
