Plasma has gotten a lot better but I think LCD is the better choice, especially if you have a lot of light coming in the room you are putting the TV in.... Plasmas still get terrible glare where LCD don't.
The reason TVs are so cheap right now is because the 240hz and now 480hz technology is coming out. It all depends on what you are going to use the TV for. The new 480hz are specific for 3D TV.... you know like a 3D movie.... which is kind of cool.
If you don't want to wait for a 240hz or don't want to pay the extra money they cost (approx $600 to $1500) then go with a SHarp Aquos or the Sony Bravia. I own both and really like them.... I think the SHarp is a little better. Make sure you get at least 120hz or you'll be unhappy especially with fast action movies and sports.
If money is not a concern, get yourself a 240hz Sharp or Sony. I don't recommend the Samsung because the resolution is too high and I find that annoying. My parents have one... drives me nuts.
and No.... I don't sell TVs just like them a lot

What is your budget and what size are you thinking?
Where are you located? Cause $400 for a 5year warranty is crazy.
Costco TVs come with a 2 year warranty
I would get a plasma, Ive had 3 and never had any issues and I love the look
You can also get 55" LEDs for under 1799 I think
Have a local bestbuy? If not they ship

Depending on the price wouldn't be a bad idea for a warranty being they're display models.
LCD is what I'd recommend. LED is still pretty pricey in comparison to how cheep LCD's and Plasmas are now. Don't go below 120hz. 40" and below, don't bother with 1080p. There's no difference between that and 78Op except for the price.

Have a 65" LG Plasma 1080P in the living room...My friends that have LCD tv's picture looks WAY better than mine, by far. That's my personal experience with them...My tv is about 3 or so years old, and was $7,000 at the time of purchase...After 1 year it blew out, and it had to be serviced, good thing it was under warranty because it was really expensive to fix. The Plasma's have too many issues in my opinion, and you should go for the LCD. The problem at the time for us was, they were not making any LCD's large enough that we could afford. The room the tv went in is HUGE with 28ft vaulted ceilings, so anything smaller than a 65 would look retarded. However, the largest LCD you could get at the time was 73" and it was $33,000 dollars.

IMO,
Plasma- if its going to be in a darker room and if your a gamer.
LED- Best all around choice and works well in brighter rooms.
LCD- Same as the LED just older technology and picture not as crisp.
Samsung for LED/LCD
Panasonic for Plasma
BestBuy or Costco has the best customer service.

I would say LCD because they last forever but i am going to be buying a new TV for my dad and i am going LED. Is it new technology for TV's ? Yes but it is new tech ? No. Its the same tech they use for computer monitors.
p.s
I love Samsung. LED , 240Hz can't go wrong.

I've got 3-LCD's in my home. Can't go wrong with the LCD, but the next I'll buy is the LED because of the better picture quality. Plasma just not crisp enough IMO.

depends what your priority is
size
value
or latest technology
If you want value, you can get a 50 inch plasma 720p for around 700 bucks right now from a few really good companies.
if you want size a dlp
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Mitsubis...&skuId=9487165
but the LED you picked out would be a pretty sweet choice and is the latest technnology
low power consumption, great picture and a nice size
it all depends what you're looking for

I know a bit when it comes to this
Plasma is the way to go for price and picture quality
The color quality will be best if your room isnt too bright
LCD is slightly cheaper and has a 'sharper' picture and works well in bright rooms and has a better angle perspective
LEDs are just LCDs but they have a different backlight which improves blacks a little bit but isnt worth the extra price tag
Screw all of the gimmicks with 240hz and up they look silly and are unrealistic
120hz is best and yes EVERYTHING is 1080p now
if your screen size is under 40 inch then you can go 720p and not notice a difference
(keep in mind that cable and sat only broadcast in 720p)
So really the ONLY difference your going to see between 720p and 1080p is if you are watching bluray movies as they are the only thing out that is full 1080p
Overall PLASMAS look way better if your watching movies and is the room is not direct sunlight
if you wanna play games or have a bright room then go with LCD
And your an idiot if you dont get the service plan trust me its NEVER cost effective to repair a tv as a cash repair so if your betting on it not breaking your good but if it does then its time to buy a new tv, Or you can spend a couple hundred now and not have to pay anything else to get it fixed or even get it exchanged for a new one it sopmething does go wrong.

Manf. Been bailing out on producing plasmas because of the costly repairs.

you can still get 720p up to 50 inch at substantial savings
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Samsung+...&skuId=9789725
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Panasoni...&skuId=9788583
and like you said, you'll never know it's 720p unless you're watching a blue ray.
it's only a couple hundred extra to go with LED now if you're in the market for a 55inch flat pannel...so why not?
the service plan is for suckers...400 plus dollars, fvck it...put it in the bank and save it for your next tv. Do the same with everything you buy and when you finally get something that breaks it will be way more money then to replace the thing that's probably already obsolete.

idk, I just think there isn't much profit left in them by the time you pay for the large close tollerance pannels of glass, and the shipping...all the profit has been removed via competition.
so they move to the new technology where there is still substantial mark-up left in the market.
I have a 5 year old pioneer elite 55 inch that looks phenominal and the only service it has ever needed was a replaced wall bracket, cause it worked it's way loose and no matter how much you tightened it, it wouldn't stay at the correct angle. it looked pretty ghetto that I was using a dvd movie case to prop up the angle against the shelf bellow.

I just picked up Samsung 55" LED 8000 series 240hz for $2,300. This LED is being discontinued due to how expensive it is to make them with 240 Hz. I believe the new LEDs will come out with only 120 Hz as it is cheaper to produce. I read extremely good reviews about this particular TV.

The electronics' refresh rate (240 Hz) doesn't aide the liquid crystals with their slow response time. The limiting factor for LCDs is still the millisecond response time, usually 4-8ms, some are as low as 2.
LCD's are locking in at a single electronics refresh rate unlike plasma's that can alter their refresh rate depending on format with a max of 600hz. Movies and TV and just about everything is nativly much slower than 120hz even. But if you multiply it by a couple it comes out to 120 evenly. 120Hz was picked as the opportune refresh rate as you say - because it can do 5:5 (24P) 4:4 (30P) and 2:2 (60P).
From what I understand next gen video game consoles are going to be a much higher refresh rate...perhaps 480...and the tv's will follow if that happens. So like anything 120hz will be obsolete. Modern film is projected at 24 frames per second. So 240hz you'd just be flickering the same picture 10 times instead of 5. TV is 30 frames per second. Still there is no reason to not use 240 over 120. Electronics are cheap once you finish with development costs. I think more likely you'll see 480hz as the standard soon rather than a move back to 120hz. It's all a waste until they make faster pannels.

It all depends like said on what you want to do with it. I still have one projection that looks/works perfect, 65" 10+ years old. I have 45" plasma in bedroom and a 110" projection. All work great for what they do.

90% movies. No sitcoms, no reality shows, no sports (yeah yeah I dont like to waste the time).
Some SiFi shows, have my laptop hooked up to the Plasma in the bedroom (45") since the screen died for surfing the internet and watching porn. (Asian porn)Last edited by lovbyts; 04-13-2010 at 05:17 AM.
