Woman Wakes Up With Foreign Accent Syndrome
What Is Foreign Accent Syndrome?
(CANVAS STAFF REPORTS) - People often wish for a foreign accent because they find it alluring and sexy. Now imagine that wish coming true by going to bed one night and waking up with an accent the next day.
It happened to a 49-year-old woman in the UK after she went to bed with a migraine one evening and woke up the next morning speaking with a French accent, The Daily Mail reported. Doctors diagnosed her with Foreign Accent Syndrome (FAS).
The BBC reports FAS is a condition that affects the part of the brain that controls word formation and speech. Doctors say that it is usually caused by a stroke or some kind of traumatic brain injury.
There is no known cure for FAS and the effect of the syndrome can last days, weeks, years or even be permanent, according to The Daily Mail .
Some symptoms of FAS are different tongue placement when pronouncing words, emphasizing different consonant sounds or altering vowels like saying "yah" for "yeah", the University of Texas at Dallas informational site on FAS explained.
Professor Sophie Scott, from the Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience at University College London, explained to the BBC , "They do not actually develop a whole new accent; it is the listener who attaches a particular label to what they are hearing. In the UK people are most likely to say someone with Foreign Accent Syndrome sounds French or German, while in the US people are mostly likely to be told they sound British."
The Daily Mail reported that the first case of FAS was diagnosed during the World War II when a woman from Norway suffered a brain injury after being hit in the head with a piece of shrapnel. She developed a German accent and was disowned by her fellow Norwegians who thought she was a German spy.
There have been roughly 50 documented cases of FAS and there has been an increase in diagnosis recently; however, this is believed to be the result of doctors being more aware of the condition, the BBC reported.
