    Anyone Here Play Guitar?

Like the title says, I was wondering how many of you play guitar. What kind of music are you into? Which guitars do you own, amps, etc?

I'll start off, I started playing at 13 years old then I had a period of a few years after college where I didn't play much at all. I just picked it back up recently, and no kidding, within one week, my skills were back to where they once were, if not slightly better. Neuronal plasticity is no joke!

I own a Fender american stratocaster electric as well as a Taylor 310 acoustic dreadnought.

I hope to someday purchase a Les Paul Standard or Paul Reed Smith and possibly to upgrade my Taylor to a 800 or 900 serious. They are just so gorgeous.

Feel free to put up picks of your axes if you have them handy. It would be cool to see what you all have.

Yea there is a bit of a steep learning curve for the guitar, but once you get to the point where you can figure out songs by ear it gets to be alot more fun. I think the biggest pain in the ass about learning guitar is that your finger tips are so sensitive at first. When I was first learning I literally played until my fingers bled at one point.

    Great thread! =)

I've been playing since I was 13. Nowadays I just play for myself/fun - no time for the whole band thing. Every once in a while I get together with some guys from the old days and we just rent studio time and jam and have fun. I own:

    GUITARS

Mid 80's (I can't remember what year) Fender American Stratocaster - customized by me. Neck position single coil replaced with a Seymour Duncan Humbucker. Phase switch added. All hardware replaced/upgraded - grover machine heads, etc.

    2003 Gibson Les Paul Standard

2004 Schecter C-1+ (I play this the most, I just love it for some reason, reminds me of a PRS the way it plays!)

1993? Ibanez RG (can't remember exact year or model - but it's old and cheap lol)

Early 80's Washburn Acoustic (given to me as a gift when I was a kid - still sounds and plays great!)

    Ovation 12 string acoustic/electric

    AMP

    Mesa Boogie Rectoverb Head
    Mesa Boogie 2x12 Cabinet w/ Celestion 50's

    EFFECTS

    Electro-Harmonix Small Stone Phase Shifter
    Ibanez TS-808 Tubescreamer (reissue)
Boss DS-2 Distortion (used as a boost, not for distortion)
    MXR Carbon Copy Analog Delay
    Dunlop Crybaby Wah
Electro Harmonix Small Clone Analog Chorus

I love all kinds of music, but find myself playing 80's metal for the most part. Early Metallica, Iron Maiden, etc. I also love classic rock - Led Zep, Floyd, the Beatles, etc. Big fan of prog rock too - Rush, King Crimson, Yes (early), and 'newer' stuff like Dream Theater, The Mars Volta, etc. Way too many influences to list, but that's the gist of it. I love classical too... i'm just a huge fan of music as a whole.

LoL if Led Zeppelin were a 'he', I doubt he'd be very happy with me.

However, considering the fact that i'd perform unspeakable and vile homosexual acts on Jimmy Page if he sat and shared any of his genius with me.... peeing sitting down pales in comparison!

I dont play to much anymore but I have a jimmy vaughn strat and a 30w marshall amp. I used to own a jackson dinky dk2 with an emg 85 active pick up in the bridge but I sold that. I also had a marshall ma100h on a marshall cab that I sold. Just kept my favorite guitar and my little practice amp. One of these days I'll string this fender up and start jamming. I played mostly shred music and some metal.

I play guitar. Lots of punk, hair metal, true rock... whatever's clever. I don't cycle, so this is where I spend all my money. Currently playing a '57 (remake, obviously. I did not spend 500k on my guitar) Gibson LPC Black Beauty.

I've played guitar on and off since I was about 10....I've only seriously picked it up back up again in the past two years.
My acoustic is a Fender Mini Jumbo and my electric is an Epiphone Les Paul...yah yah I know, not a Gibson.
I started out on a Costco special that was so poorly made it NEVER sounded good, no matter how much I practiced and I got fed up. I think a lot of beginners that start off with crappy guitars end up with the same fate-a closet musical instrument.

I enjoy everything except country--alternative, pop, rock, metal...you name it. I'm not awesome and my hands are so small I can't even stretch them out to do bar chords but, I enjoy it.

I have played off and on for 18 years ,selftaught.
I have a new ibanez steel string ,a nylonstring with a pickup, and a esp through neck electric guitar from the 80s.
Since i started a family 9 years i cant really play anymore, the kids just grab the strings and pound on my guitars lol.
It is a great passtime though ,it takes your mind off the everyday stress.

I play the guitar and piano (had formal lessons for 6 years when I was younger than like another 7 years of self lessons) and now I play a midi keyboard lol.

Point being, when you play a midi keyboard you can "virtually" play anything. Saxaphone, violin, flute, bass, woodwinds, piano, guitar, anything you want.
Now I stopped playing both the piano and guitar and do it all through a sequencer/keyboard so I can play anything I want. Its pretty crazy when I have
people over and play guitar riffs off my keyboard now, people usually get a kick out of it. But I do it that way as I produce trance, and guitar/piano are
fairly popular for trance so it helps.

/\ (@BJ) Dude playing/producing is a bigger and better escape from life than any drug I can think of.

And I can say that because I use to have many drug addictions when I was younger. But once I found music I never looked back. When I'm in my studio I can't describe the feeling I get but its almost like after you bust a nut, and the euphoria goes away, and theres just this feeling of absolute content with the world. One of the best hobbies in the world aside from working out and picking up girls.

I completely agree man. I also have also had some issues with substances in my life, and music definitely reduces the urge to take anything. The feeling I get when I finally learn to play a difficult song is incredible and nothing really compares IMO. I think that this feeling stems from the release of dopamine in the brain which accompanies a novel and satisfying experience. In that way, playing an instrument is comparable to an actual drug without any of the negatives associated with them.

IMO if you want to learn as quickly as possible, I would suggest getting a few lessons. This will teach you the very basics and get you started. After learning the basics (chords, scales etc) then the rest of it is up to you practicing on your own. If you don't want to get lessons, I would look for a good beginner's lesson book. Look for something that teaches you the proper way of setting up the instrument, holding it, chords etc. Youtube might have some stuff but I think a book would be better. Once you learn the basics you can start to learn to play the songs you like. There is a type of musical notation common for the guitar called "tablature". You don't have to know how to read music to understand it and you can find tabs for almost any song you would want to play. This should help you get started.

Thanks brotha! The strat action is much better only because I set it all up the way I like it. Honestly I don't play the Les Paul much and never set it up properly. At this point it's just purty to look at lol!

This is good advice. Here is the beginner book/DVD I would suggest:

You might want to pick up a chord book as well.

Fender 62 re-issue strat and a 57 re-issue strat. Peavey classic 50 amp, MXR micro amp, boss SD-1,Boss ds-2,Big muff,Ibanez wh-10 wah, Line 6 MM4. I also have a line 6 M9 to mess around with and sometime put it on my board. I play stuff like Chili peppers, pear jam, White stripes, Raconteurs, Cant forget Hendrix. Im a 90s rock guy but getting more into blues type stuff

If you wanna learn guitar go to Justin Sandercores site and Legacys "Learn and master guitar". Those 2 sites are all you need to become an excellent guitarist. Those 2 sites will keep you busy for a year if you are a begginer

Gotcha, yea setting up the guitar properly makes a world of difference. I never really bothered learning how to do that properly until recently but it is an essential aspect of playing the instrument IMO.

To be honest, one of the main reasons I want a Les Paul is for the looks. They are one of the most beautiful guitars made. I also love Zeppelin so that would be a good thing to have on hand their material. Once I get a Les Paul and a Telecaster, my electric collection will be complete..... more or less.

One interesting little known fact, did you know that the solo for Stairway to Heaven, as well as much of Led Zeppelin's first album was recorded using a Fender Telecaster? This was surprising to me, seeing as how fat of a tone Page produces on many songs. It just goes to show you that tone is produced primarily by the player and not necessarily by the equipment.

Nice collection. I am looking for a small tube amp that I can use for playing in my apartment. Obviously the wattage has to be very low because I want to be able to crank it up and get some tube distortion without being evicted. Do you or anyone else have any recommendations for such an amp? I would be using it for blues type playing and adding an overdrive peddle to enhance the distortion for the harder sounding songs. I was thinking of something along the lines of a Fender Blues Junior. Those go for around $500, which would be around my upper limit price wise.
