I have a deviated septum and can't smell anything unless it is really strong. Wondering if anyone has had this fixed and what the effects were on your sense of taste before and after surgery.

Had it fixed when I was 18 after several broken noses and sinus infections that were unaffected by antibiotics.
When the doc took the ridiculous amount of gauze "packing" out of my nose and sinus cavities a week after surgery, I was fukking amazed. I didn't realize that I couldn't breathe, smell or taste anything until that day. It was like taking a breath of fresh air after suffocating for a long time, only I didn't realize that I was suffocating b/c I didn't know any different. I could taste food better, smells were way more intense, and I could breathe normally through my nose instead of through my mouth.
My situation was kind of extreme as due to a broken nose my nasal cavity was being blocked by bone. They rebroke my nose and moved the bones out of the way and straightened my septum. It was terribly painful but I would have it done again 10 times over for the end result. If yours is fairly severe, you should have it done - you don't realize what you'r missing out on.
I was taking Tae Kwon Do as a kid. I was distracted when some girls walk in the gym, and the dude I was sparing kicks me right in the nose and rips the shit out of the inside. Yeah, i guess i do have a DS, and don't really smell anything unless it is a strong odor.
I'm too old now to worry about getting it fixed. No worries
Ive had mine fixed 3x. 1st time was due to breaking it as a kid but didnt have it fixed until mid 20s. 2nd time was due to polyps and 3rd I had broken it again so they just removed part of the cartilage so it wont/cant break again.
1st time was extensive, both eyes swollen almost shut, massive packing the works. It looked like I got hit by a truck literally. I was taking some drafting classes and it was right before the final exam. The teacher had said NO excuses for missing the exam so I went to school 2 days after surgery to take the test. The teacher said WTF happened to me? I told him, he said WHY was I there. I said because he had said no excuses. He said he was not that serious and I could take it later. I said no, I was there so I might as well. I think the pain meds helped, I got a 98 on my test.
It's been several years since my last surgery and I can breath and smell pretty much normal now. 1 week after surgery I would say NO... You will just be starting to heal. I would say at least 3 weeks if not longer.
I had the surgery and to be honest I can not tell any difference. The first couple of days after the packing came out was great, but then everything went right back to the way it was.
the other thing with my DS.... besides the can't smell very well, is I have a tough time breathing through my nose. woman says i breathe through my mouth at night..... mouth all open and shit.... real glad she doesn't put shit in there....
Breathing through my nose is like breathing through a small straw. I wanna have it done but don't want to be out of commission for two weeksOriginally Posted by Times Roman;56***41
Two weeks is very minimal when you take into consideration the decades of a better life it will give you.Originally Posted by Twist;56***77
True. I'll probably get it done. Now all I gotta do is find a good doc.Originally Posted by stack_it;56***93
