In response to a report that revealed officers routinely using state health benefits to acquire steroids , New Jersey Attorney General, Paula Dow announces plans to test police officers for illegal steroid use . Anabolic steroids and human growth hormone will be added to the list of tested substances.

The tests will be funded by local departments, which effectively means they can decide when the tests are carried out, and even whether or not to do them.

Departments are being encouraged locally to have officers self-report steroid usage.

Police officers who are found to have steroids or growth hormones in their blood will have to produce a doctor's letter showing that a prescription was issued, and that the medication had a clinical reason. The letter must also state that the treatment will not undermine how that officer carries out his/her duties.

As soon as the reform is in place, the Attorney General will issue a communiqué explaining the administrative action and what penalties users may face if they illegally use or acquire steroids or human growth hormones.

According to a Star Ledger report last year, hundreds of police officers in New Jersey acquired steroids through Dr. Joseph Colao, who apparently made false diagnoses. Their prescriptions were filled through police public health plans.

The steroids and human growth hormones were used for enhance muscle growth.

A subsequent investigation found that officers' medical claims appeared to go through without much scrutiny. Additionally, the investigation found that doctors who issued fake prescriptions were not penalized.

In 2010, the state of New Jersey spent $11.2 million covering human growth hormone (200 employees) and steroid prescriptions (6,000 employees).

The new legislation will facilitate the prosecution of police officers who use steroids illegally.

    Attorney General Dow said:

"It is important that we strengthen oversight, regulation and investigation in order to discourage the improper use of steroids throughout New Jersey's law enforcement community and ensure the public's confidence. Law enforcement holds a special trust based on its authority and must be held to the highest standard of professionalism. These reforms tighten the safeguards against abuse not only by law enforcement, but by other members of public health plans and doctors who improperly prescribe these substances."

Exactly. They found a loophole. The doctor is conducting his practice illegally but the officers had a prescription to obtain their AAS legally. With a prescription, can the officer be punished for failing a drug test?

Assuming that the aas is for other than trt, then off label use of aas would be for other than "medicinal uses" as defined by the FDA.

Just another reason that the theory behind the prohibition against aas is pretty shakey.

Im not necessarily against cops using aas. I am against them using tax payer dollars for their muscle enhancing drugs. They should pay for it out of their own pockets like everyone else.

I do aknowledge that having a doctor prescribe it seems to give it some legitimacy.

Im not sure how I feel about the doctors prescribing it. Again, for trt, then the doctor should be G2G. But if they are prescribing 500mg/week test cyp, then i'm thinking there should be some punitive action against the doctor.

Ya i have a problem with feelling like i have to be covert about my aas use when the people im hiding it from are also the people using it themselves. No body should be above the law (that would be a dictatorship). Im not agaisnt cops using aas but im also not against any of "us" usiing it either. Make the law the law and make everybody follow it or just get rid of the law

Probably. Just like drug addicts that have prescriptions for their pain pills. Seeking out drugs and finding someone that will give them to you doesn't let you off the hook legally. I am not an attorney, but I know people with scrips get busted all the time, as do doctors that overprescribe for money.

fvck the cops..... if theyre gunna bust me..... let them get busted. Why should I pay part of the $11.2 million for a few jerkoffs to get steroids illegally prescribed - then have one pull me over and arrest me for having a few dbols or w/e in the car.

Test em all..... and ban them from future public service..... fvck em all.....

Fuk them Copperheads. They are always using their positions to abuse the system when we all cant. Like speeding on a regular basis. Cops have a common courtesy among themselves on these and other crimes that they are immune from by way of just being cops. Cops with Benefits that we can't get. Same way with drunk driving, they get a pass from their fellow members. There are laws for all of us and then laws for cops. so give um Hell Hazard. They deserve it IMO
