Old Skool Rap ... who's a fan?
I guess the term 'old skool' is relative to your age. I'm 35, so for me, it's 80's and very early 90's. A few memorable ones for me:
The obvious:
Run DMC
Eric B and Rakim (who had a smoother voice and delivery than Rakim?)
Biz Markie (imo)
The Fat Boys (yea, kind of a joke but I liked em' back in 83' lol)
Some of my favs:
Master Ace (before he was 'Masta' Ace)
Ed OG and da Bulldogs
D-Nice
Main Source
Leaders of the New School (well, at the time it was considered new school lol)
Das Efx
Fu Schnicken
Gangstarr
Kool G Rap and DJ Polo
The Ghetto Boys
A Tribe Called Quest
Brand Nubian
Wu Tang
Lords of the Underground
The Jungle Brothers
EPMD
Redman
X-Clan
As I think back and remember others, i'll update. Give me yours - and please keep 2000 and later shit OUT of this thread!

Old fvck!!!
I was never a fan of that West Coast soft sounding rap... East Coast forever... keep it where it started!!
Agree with the bad ones though - but do add Vanilla Ice to the bad list. The only worthy white rappers from back in the day IMO were 3rd Bass and House of Pain. Beastie Boys deserve some props but were never really straight rap in my book anyway, so they don't make the cut.
Night Ranger and Asia too! Maybe TR was into hair metal - Poison, Cinderella, etc!
I hate current rap, most of it's terrible IMO. But whenever I listen to the stuff I grew up with, I still think it sounds good. It was a relatively new genre and had so much room to grow, there was always something new and original. This crap today can't hold a candle to the old stuff. The vid below pretty much says it all:

Yeah, but during this era it was/could be still called HIP HOP!
I love this music man, however, later 90's is where the really lyrical guys were at, although late 80's and early 90's did have it's artists.
Emcees I listen to:
Canibus
Killah Priest
Wu-Tang Clan
Mos Def
Big Pun
Big L
Gang Starr
NaS
BIGGIE
Journalist
Kool G Rap
Rakim
Big Daddy Kane
Keith Murray
MF Doom
Large Professor
Redman
DMX
The LOX
Eminem (I can enjoy only his first 2 albums though)
Binary Star
Joell Ortiz
Royce Da 5'9"
Crooked-I
And yes, then Bronx is where it all started...however, Brooklyn produced the most quality Emcees.
Cool thread dude. I know a lot of the "older generation" (that's gonna get me flamed :P ) doesn't like Hip Hop. That's not because it's not art, but because you probably don't understand these artists...and the mainstream today (and for a long time, actually) hasn't done Hip Hop ANY justice. So, if you listen to the radio, and you hear a song by Lil Wayne, Kanye, whoever...that's NOT Hip Hop. That's just so called "entertainment" for the tasteless

I agree with the OP on the West Coast. They never nailed it lyrically, it was always some half assed shit to me.
"There's too many rappers in the East wanna be gangsters/
Too many gangsters in the West wanna be rappers/"
Taken from Killah Priest's "Fake MCs"

At the time I thought they were badass... then again I was also in elementary school/ beginning of junior high..
Still remember Dr. Dre - The Chronic was my first tape I ever bought... was listening to it in the basement for the first time... about 30 secs in to the first song, my mom overheard some lyrics.. never saw that cassette again.. lol
Oh n H.O.P is classic.. never really considered BB rap
Nowadays its mainly EDM with some alternative/rock mixed in (Breaking Benjamin, Godsmack, Shinedown..)

^^^ Love this!!
Yea man... it just sounded like corny soft shit to me. It had no bite, no soul. It was too laid back and 'smooth' sounding for me. I was into rap that was 'in your face'. Even when East Coast rap softened up (i.e. new school at the time - A Tribe Called Quest, Brand Nubian, etc), it lyrically got much better and was a fresh take on the style. They rapped about all kinds of stuff, while West Coast was just constant gangsta gangsta gangsta... we fvckin get it already!!

Oh, and as for the fusion of rap and rock - aside from the obvious Run DMC and Aerosmith collaboration - please don't EVER talk to me about Limp Bizkit and Korn and shit. There were bands doing it way before them. Anthrax, RATM, Biohazard, Shootyz Groove, 311 (before they were well known), etc. This was going on all over the Lower East Side in NYC in the early 90's before anybody else was doing it.

Complete black out.
Take lyricism to a whole new level...ain't nobody fvckin with this, even 11 years later, MCs don't know how he'd write like that.

Don't worry GBrice, no Tupac fan over here either.
Too much emotion, not enough lyrics. His metaphors were JUST above sub-par. He couldn't spit a funny/heavy punchline to save his life.
I can understand why some people like him, he speaks out of the heart I guess...but Biggie's dark and gloomy portrayal of the streets is much more what I like. Makes for some good punches too.
anyways, Tupac lacks a lot of elements that I personally like in an MC. But that's me.

Agreed bro. By the time Biggie was 'big', I was kinda out of my rap phase, so I admittedly don't know much of his stuff - but what I do know I like better than Tupac's work.
lol Haz, what's your music of choice? Metal? Aside from rap, I'm a huge 80's metal fan as well. I'm multi-dimensional!

Word, I listen to anything.
Hip Hop (like the artists mentioned), Rock (I'm a HUGE Doors fan, Led Zeppelin, Floyd, Beatles), Metal (Metallica of course, I'll listen to Megadeath here and there....and my all time favourite band, RAMMSTEIN ) Techno, House, basically most electronic music, Blues, Soul....
You see, you don't have to hate Hip Hop because you listen to metal. I'm glad I have such a big array of choices. I couldn't listen to the same genre all the time...that's mad boring!

Also Haz, HIP HOP is what I listen to...
-
08-05-2011, 11:43 AM #31
I like virtually everything except for rap/hiphop or i'm not a country fan either.....
I like CCR, Beatles, System of a down, tool, korn, blink 182...... I like a lot of different music. My favorite music is EDM - electro house.
Chuckie - Mutfakta (youtube) - I still enjoy going out to clubs and shit so..... lmao

Easy E.
NWA.
KRS One.
Kool Moe Dee
Doug E. Fresh
Grandmaster Flash
Man, I know there a bunch more that I listed to WAY back. I don't listen to much now. Love Jay-Z, and listen to some Nas, Lil Wayne and Eminem. I know there is other great stuff out there, but all the retarded club/party rap crap has turned me off to the genre.

All of these rap groups and not one mention of...Too Short? I'm ashamed....
-
08-05-2011, 12:59 PM #37
I'm starting to like this guy ^^^
60's / 70's rock is my favorite genre of all. Led Zep is probably my fav of all time aside from the Beatles. I'm a huge Floyd fan, also a big prog rock fan - King Crimson, (early) YES, Rush, Jethro Tull, ELP, etc.
Like your style too Haz, minus the EDM - except for when i'm in a club and drunk as fvck! I mean, I don't sit around my house and listen to the shit though lol
I'm about 25 mins North of Seaside - i'm right near Red Bank.
Originally from Jersey GB? What town?
There go some good blasts from the past!! Well done!
We said rap groups, not a description of your penis... according to DSM of course
