ive just seen part of some police reality show in which the cop car was a hummer!! written up the side was, 'this vehicle was seized from a drug dealer'. is this for real, or some sort of piss take?!

I believe it's real. The cops can seize your vehicle if used in the commission of a drug related crime.... dealing especially.

In the Cali central valley, i've seen some really nice corvette's with tinted windows cruising up and down the highways. Turns out they were police vehicles. I imagine they were seized. Can't imagine highway patrol springing for corvettes?

They do sometimes. Most of the cars get sold at auction but sometimes they'll keep a few for UC work.

They have been doing that in so cal for decades..I havnt seen it actually written on the side of vehicle, but that is where the nice cars and trucks the force uses here comes from. I remember back in the 90's when they use to chase us down on our crotch rockets with supercharged mustangs and Irocs that were obvious impounds.

Down here they sometimes use them for D.A.R.E advertising cars (its an anti drug program for school kids)..they'll have a Porsche or something with police graphics and the D.A.R.E logo.

they can seize vehicles here in my state under something called article 36. You don't even have to be a drug dealer you just have to driving on a suspended license and bam! that car is up for seizure! It also blows because lets say you lend your vehicle to a friend or whomever and they have a suspended license, guess what? Doesn't matter that car still is up for seizure!!! I went to a county Sheriff's Hq for work and they have about 250 cars back there that were seized. You name it they had it! From minivans to sports cars.

This is more common than you would think, Atlanta PD has a couple Lamborghini's they seized that they put lights on and use as DARE cars.

All DEA agents drive seized cars, mostly high end cars.

Guy sells drugs/steals to buy a 200,000 car, cops seize the car and drive it for personal use for their department... that's real beneficial to the people the cops are supposed to serve.

Maybe its just me, but wouldn't it make more sense for the dept to sell the high-end cars and put the proceeds to good use instead of crying about passing proposals and laying off people because of their budget deficit.

What they do is seize the vehicle and they exchange them with other cities in the state. This way no one recognizes it.
