Cat behaviour
I have two cats, one male and one female. they're hybrid bobcat/american barn cat and therefore large with big claws and teeth etc.
they are from the same litter, the tom is 22lbs and the queen 13lbs (she was the runt of the litter), to put into context a typical domestic cat is around the 9-10lb mark. they are unusually affectionate as far as cats go, and love sitting beside or on their owners as much as possible. they are 100% indoor cats as due to the bobcat blood they cant receive certain vaccinations.
the prob is that the tom seems to take random periods of pouncing on the poor little queen and given his size and strength and claws (paws are almost same size as my dalmatians'!!) its not a pleasant experience for her. i know they have their own cat hierarchy thing going on that we cant interfere with, but i feel so sorry for the little queen, she'll get all comfy on my lap or on the bed and he'll pounce on her and chase her. i dont know whether its play or jealousy, he doesn't overly hurt her. he's generally ok with her and they cuddle up together 90% of the time. he seems to take these fits of rough play late at night or early morning.
i saw these and wondered if anyone has used them, they're supposed to replicate cat pheromones and chill them out. but on the other hand, it could be a load of crap.

It sounds like the male cat is showing his dominance because he should be getting all the attention

COOL CATS!
I had a bangel half breed for years and it acted JUST like a friggan dog! awwww I miss that cat.
Feliway works for some cats/behaviors (about 80%)... some Vets prescribe the concentrated spray because the defuses don’t cut it for everyone/cat/situation...but will not work effectively if triggers are not fixed in tandem with the product.
Its actually the name of the pheromone in the cats checks that = friendliness/friendly message
Last I knew it’s only made by 1 company outside of USA, so if you shop around for the best deal you don’t have to worry about a cheep one working any less effective

I checked this out and was a lill confused by the site...is it for cats or dogs? lol but I just skimmed it, maybe its more clear on the ordoring page...
Pheromones are safe for other animals but only work for a specific animal...dog pheromones are diff than cats and won’t affect them etc.

i hoped you would check in to this thread s4ms, given your dog expertise. they are Pixiebobs, much more popular over there in the US, the breeder said theres only around 1000 of these cats in Europe. Mine are off the original Legend Cat bloodline. their behaviour is so attentive they're nicknamed 'the dog, in a cat suit'.
on the whole they are the most affectionate loyal pets you'd ever encounter. its only at certain times and for a short period of time that the tom exhibits this behaviour, do you reckon he's just asserting his dominance?
the breeder thought it was quite unusual as appar its the queens who normally rule roost in a two/multi cat scenario. at night the tom will call with jungle like noises and then follows it with a prolonged sound very similar to a baby crying, its as if he is 'patrolling' his patch, the queen will usually respond with chirping noises and grunts like like a bull frog (weird bloody noise for a cat lol).
they are an amazing breed of cat, once you think you know them they exhibit another quirk to their personalities.Last edited by dec11; 10-29-2011 at 11:25 PM.

I can total picture them lol, sounds just like my cat was...and so friggan smart but they def have the wild side. I would never get a reg breed cat again they just dont compare lol I started looking at the savannah cat, even had Tiger on board for getting it (altho its so big that I dont know if it could use the toilet and I HATE litter boxes)...but bookoo dollars! Attachment 117693
I never had 2 half breeds at the same time and most cats that I have worked with in groomers are pure breed/shelters are mix or unknown so I dont know how much help I can be for you cuz the mix wild breeds as you know are in a class their own.
You mention your females strange noises...is she in heat? Are they fixed? Aggression releases sexual frustration
If its territorial...cats that get along can even become all about turf all the sudden, if this is the case you can try perches/cat condos (if they fit lol) or giving each a designated room at night if possible
You can tell if its Alfa aggression if a certain cat perches higher than another often/eats first/push others from food/Alfa rolls can change and re-charge even
Could be strong pray drive?
Hope this is some what helpful

I like your choice in cats. Ive always liked exotic mixed breeds but our county wont let you have them. Yeah Ill still get one/two when my house and yard is big enough.
One of my favorite stores is from a friend who had a bob cat mix and he and his family were having breakfast on the 2nd floor balcony when they saw their wiener dog being attached by the neighbors German Shepard. The bob cat mix was up with them and all he saw was a flash by his feet. Next thing he knew the cat was on top of the German Sheppard and he was running for his life; literally. The neighbors tried to sew them for damages because their dog needed several stitches and was torn up bad. Luckily it was literally laughed out of court since their dog had trespassed and attached the smaller dog only to be run off by the cat.

both are fixed. its almost as if the queen needs his permission, she'll go to walk across a room move afew steps then look at him warily before she goes any further. this isnt all the time, just at periods when the tom is at his most lively and boisterous. she'll happily cuddle up with him for hours on end with no trouble.
a fascinating thing is that he'll nip her with his teeth on the neck then immediately lick the area and pull her in close with his paws in a strangle hold and that is when she'll squeal and give him the talons and then run. he'll do the same thing with us, play bite then repeatedly lick our fingers

the usual size beds etc dont apply to the tom lol, everything for him has to come from the dog section of the pet store! i rem when i first took him to the vet, walked into the examination room and he exclaimed that the carry box was very large for a cat, i then opened the door and he strutted out, and the vet excitedly said 'jesus christ i see why, thats a bloody big cat, what the hell is it and does he bite'?!! lol
not my actual tom (havent any pics of him on this new laptop) but identical except mine has more of a 'big cat' muzzle

yours must have been a pixie then hun, mine would be thicker set up front, than the one in the pic. to the touch he iss solid muscle, visitors joke that i take him to the gym lol. they are exceptional cats, as loyal as dogs.
did yours walk like a big wild cat? if so, then he most likely was a pixie, they have a unique stride, different from domestic cats and use their paws like we use our hands.

That's a nice looking cat, mate!
Kinda looks like mine, except mines only 19lbs. I gotta get him bulking more, lol.
As far as the behavior, if they are cool together 90% like you say and he's not really hurting her, then I wouldn't worry about it too much.
Probably just a combination of jealousy and male exerting his dominance.

haha, both ours do that, appar its them showing affection, ive woken up many times with one gnawing on my fingers. the little queen is a sweetheart, she'll just gently paw at us, we have to be more careful of the tom though, his claws slash like bloody razor blades when he plays too rough, he has gotten me to the bone before

Attachment 117839sounds like dominance to me too
i like just having the one
mine always reminds me of the cat and big bulldog on tom & jerry where the cat is making bread on the dog with his claws before settling in for a nap...he does the same to my chest...
he's one and has really gotten to be a licker...we googled that and pretty much is affection
i love my *****!Last edited by zaggahamma; 11-05-2011 at 04:39 AM.

is he mixed, given the white feet? if not, breeders may be interested in that, to try and produce white pixies, i know there are ultra rare and expensive blacks around.
my 2 have normal toes but some pixies can have up to 7 seven toes per foot, so thats 28 toes! this phenomenon is called polydactyl. they also have primordial pouchesLast edited by dec11; 11-04-2011 at 10:41 AM.

nope, he was a bangle 2nd gen (F2) which was why he was a bit more wild side, paid bookoo bucks to be sure from the TIBCS. Pixis are cool looking but we wanted a bangle.

those are nice cats!!! are they a variation of Bengals? i almost got one of those but once i saw the pixies i was in awe of 'em! hybrid cats have taken off big time now, mixes with Servols, Ocelots etc etc. my breeder warned me of bad practices that are going on though. appar someone in the US was mixing pixiebobs and maine coons to produce the big long haired look, they suffer from seizures and other bad health probs, there was afew other combinations she mentioned but i cant rem them now. she actually talked to and interviewed me for 3hrs before she told me i was 'allowed' to buy one! she would only send pedigree papers on proof of a vets receipt of castration for the tom (we got the queen a year later). the only breeders in europe are afew in England and our breeder here in Ireland and they keep it tight to stop bad breeding, quite rightly given the plight dalmatians suffered with inbreeding.
heres afew of mine, you can see the size diff between them and that he can be affectionate with her aswell, hugging her etc

why is that? just to eliminate everything with one law to eliminate disputes over proving actual species? in ireland you can have anything, i know of one guy with a tiger, lion and a panther.
you can have poisonous snakes etc, my local pet shop sold rattle snakes and cobras, ive kept boas and pythons before but a venomous snake is like having a loaded gun lying around the house!!
infact, the only is control over dogs, pitbulls etc. but a lion, no prob and hell yeah, go get oneLast edited by dec11; 11-05-2011 at 07:57 PM.
