Memorable Bands to come out of the 90's

In the early 90's, hair metal gave way to an entire new style of music - grunge. I hate labeling musical styles, but some of the bands had a fresh sound. I dug alot of them back in the day, but only a few still stand out to me nearly 20 years later.

One of my favs were Alice in Chains. While labeled as 'grunge', they were DEFINITELY on the heavier/darker side, as compared to bands like Pearl Jam or Stone Temple Pilots.

    Love tunes like:

    http://youtu.be/2MzgqwVQNF4

    Also a big Soundgarden fan...

(one of the best music videos ever imo) http://youtu.be/3mbBbFH9fAg

    http://youtu.be/XmIqIVxUuKs

    http://youtu.be/sC2GjXMk7i4

So what about you guys? I'd be especially interested to hear if/how this genre, being born in America, translated in Europe, England, etc.

I dig those Seattle grunge bands to! My best metal band from the 90s would have to be Tool for sure. Jam this one during a workout.

Disturbed and Godsmack are borderline late 90s. Those bands jam too.

i just could never take to grunge at all, to me it was just all whingeing and pumped up indie pop.

for me, it certainly should never have been considered within the 'metal' genre

Tool was definitely one of them... very unique band. I wouldn't consider them metal per se, but they definitely had a metal edge.

i like some dance from the early 90's rave scene, celtic rock (Horslips, Moving Hearts etc) traditional irish, traditional english (brought alive by Jethro Tull ) and some of the british 80's pop stuff. i detest the crap that passes for radio music these days, boy bands, girl bands, Rihanna etc

x2 - the crap on the radio today is God awful. However, I DO have to give props to Lady Gaga; when I first heard her, I figured she was just like the rest of them, another pop princess with no talent. Turns out I was quite wrong. She studied music at Julliard, and writes/performs all her own music.

Now, while the music might not be your cup of tea (it's not mine either)... I heard her perform a version on Howard Stern (do you know who he is?) that gave me goose bumps... been a fan ever since. Worth checking out imo...

first, the studio version - i.e. the version on the radio that, while admittedly a catchy song, I don't give a crap about:

    http://youtu.be/QeWBS0JBNzQ

now, the version on Stern which completely blew me away - fvcking woman is talented, I don't think there is any debating that:

^^ 90's is ok, but I never said it's my fav genre! Far from it actually... some of my all time fav bands:

    The Beatles (always number 1)
    Led Zep
    Floyd
    King Crimson
    YES
    Rush
    Sabbath

a bunch of blues... SRV, Johnny Winter...

and a whole slew of 80's metal bands...
