What is Houston Texas Like?
Hey All, I was wondering what people's thoughts were on Houston Texas? I'm considering relocating there and i've never been before. Thanks in advance.

Any reason in particular, I've heard that people hate the weather the most.

It's on my list, but have not been yet. Got as close as San Diego once, but that was years ago. Not sure how far that would be from Houston. Especially accounting for the traffic.

Ive been there for work a couple of times....I had fun, food was good, met cool people and they were friendly.
Down side.....fvking huge spread out city, everybody drives SUVs at 80 mph talking on their cell phones and the city is sinking.
But I'm an Ozzie....so what do I know

depends on where you go. i live around a good area and can walk to the bars and restaurants. i can also walk out of my door and go jogging around or bike it to memorial park where the women flock like geese! and, its what you make of it, and i make it happen!!!!

I live in Dallas. Houston is the armpit of America. Hot, humid, and the traffic is horrible. Now if you live on the North side its not so bad maybe like The Woodlands or Conroe. But the closer you get to Houston and then even further south it is horrible.

lived there for 11 years so I have a pretty good idea vs. just visiting
Weather: Winters typically have good weather. Can be in shorts on XMAS day (70's) or could be 50 degrees and rainy. Snows every 8 years or so. Best time of the year to do things outdoors imo.
Spring, Summer. Brutal. Typically very hot and humid. Extreme humidity that sucks the life out of you! April will be in the 80's already. Summers are mid-to-high 90's and humid. Big, wet swamp. Ugh.
Huge, massive city. 5.5 million people or so. Extreme sprawl. People drive fast. Traffic sucks. Lots of congestion.
Zoning: Practically none. It's not a 'pretty' city. Can have strip club by a strip mall, by a storage rental unit, by a church, by a school (ok not exactly but you get the point). There ARE nice areas however. The suburbs have nice areas, like Katy, the Woodlands, Sugarland, etc.
Cost: Housing is cheap - like really affordable. Big homes for good prices. Of course your a/c bill will kill you in the summer! Pools are all over but they're damn warm in the middle of summer.
Restaurants: Houston is known for its diversity and has great places to eat. Any ethnicity you can imagine. Amazing Tex-Mex and Texas BBQ.
People: More hispanics than caucasians. A lot of rednecks. A lot of professionals as well. Oil and Gas is huge there. Many big corporations.
Things to do: With any huge city, there's tons of things. Have MLB with the Astros, Football with the Texans, pro hockey with the Aeros. You can golf 365 days per year. The gulf coast is 30 to 60 minutes away. Lots of fishing. New Orleans is a 5 hour drive. San Antonio 3 hours. Austin 3 hours. Dallas 4 hours.
Is it a great place, well no, and I don't think any place is. Is it terrible, then no as well. It depends on what you make it and what you're looking for. I didn't mind it but eventually it was time to go. The weather is brutal in the summer but good the rest of the year. Cost of living cheap. Great food. Not many outdoor activities.
my 2 cents anyways...Last edited by subnet; 11-04-2011 at 01:57 PM.

Hey thanks for the VERY detailed response, actually very helpful. Especially liked that bit about the zoning. It actually reminds me of the place that I grew up minus the humidity. And yes the place is what you make of it. No place is perfect, but I don't think that someone should be putting their life on hold, or feel like they are just because they don't like the place they live in.
