If he is entering the military then i would consider something along the lines of a Leatherman or Gerber?
How about, a voucher for a decent cloths store. A decent book, something with meaning that will captivate him. Dont think about major $$ as when i was that age i brought what i wanted (unless your buying him a new car) lol.
Some gym equipment, wraps or belt strap. You could get a gym bag and get a combination of things mate, training DVD. Cloths voucher, gym gear, leatherman.
Good luck with it mate, not sure if my tips help as i have no kids lol

^^^ you can't go wrong with a leatherman or a Swiss army knife...
I love looking at them in the shops... Good presents IMO
I think the best gifts are things that will last you for ever...

Is he active?
http://gopro.com/products/?gclid=CPT...FcQbQgodCF1UGQ
Or buy him a prepaid activity to do like set him up with some bungee jump tickets
or hang gliding tickets
or rent a sport fishing boat out for him and a buddy to go fish for game fish/ like marlin/sailfish
If he drinks buy him a home beer brewing kit
If he's going into the military I'm sure he likes guns buy him a nice handgun

Ok guys, thanks for all the great advice. Cash seems to be popular, although generic, and i always get him that. Someone said bunjee jump, and we have a skydiveing thing 30 miles up the road, but i'd want ot do that with him as it would be first time for both of us.
his GF doesn't really drink or party (thankgod!) so the beer thing is out. Plus i brewed for 5 years and know what a mess/hassle that is.
Weight belts sound good.
The gun thing is out.... his mom barely let's me have the small arsenol i have....
OK.... shit to consider!
Thanks mates! =)

All good choices
As Hoggage said CASH, the one thing everybody loves. It may seem like you had zero interest in thinking of a gift but trust me it's much better that getting
something you don't want when you would much rather have the cash to spend on something you actually want
A nice gift would be a new leather wallet with some cash and a clothes voucher or something along those lines
As you said you could have a voucher for a skydive for 2, both you and your son. That would be awesome
If he doesn't like it you can always send it on to me. im also gonna be 21 next week :P
Loads of peeps have nov birthdays, nov birthdays ftw!

Electronics are always nice- new stereo or laptop would be a sweet gift. But I'd still say cash would be best- like father son dinner and drinks, then toss him a card with 100 bucks in it or somthing.
