waited for the robber to approach him, sized him up, made sure he didn't have hands on the weapon, distracted him, then struck with non lethal force.

clerk said he said he would've shot him. he probably has a pistol grip shotty mounted underneath his desk. could've blown his shitty little head off. instead he just put his lights out for a few seconds. robber should be grateful he walked out of there in cuffs.
