just got out of the hospital
I did shoulders on thursay. My normal workout. The onyl thing different id did was my shoulder presses i did standing not seated.
Friday i work up a little stiff. Sat i woke up in a ton of pain. Couldnt move. And then today my arm was getting numb. So i went to the er. They did xrays. My trap muscle is locked up. And it pulled the curve out of the neck of my spine. So its pushing on the nerves.
So this suck no training for a little bit.If people can't tell your on steroids then your doing them wrong

you do your shoulder presses standing? that puts more of a strain on your body than seated in my opinion. but im sure you've been doing it that way forever and a day. when you return to the gym, perhaps seated presses are what the doctor ordered, at least from now on until you're healed up completely?
edit: i just realized you don't usually do standing presses. yeah man follow your original plan seated. at least you can still type and cruise around in hereLast edited by MickeyKnox; 05-13-2012 at 07:00 PM.

Curious. How would a standing shoulder press affect the traps so greatly that they put that kind of strain on the neck / spine? Did the doc explain how it happened?

Yeah that sucks gixx. Seems like more and more are getting injured these days. I guess we need to step back and quit over doing it. Even if we feel great at the time, sometimes the ole body needs more recuperation time. And as one gets older hint hint it can't recover as quickly or as easily. Something to keep in mind. But with that said the valiums 10 mg's of course and vicodens 10/325 mg's will surely help ease the pain. you will have no pain and not even care. It's a win win..

That's frustrating.. I've definitely been there. Yup slow it down and let it heal.. You know what to do. Glad it's not worse. Have fun tonight while you're still spiffy haha.

Heal quick mate
sucks being injured. been down a couple times myself, and for me it's about 6 months back.

You may be right about the standing presses, or maybe it was just the final straw for the impending injury. Either way, hope you heal up fast! Did they recommend or have you considered a chiropractor? If so, find one with their advanced degree in applied kinesiology. They can be amazingly helpful.

with all due respect to your doc, I could not find one clinical study in a Google search to substantiate her opinion on chiropractic care, quite the opposite in fact. Heal up gixxer! the trap may have just been ready to blow, but your smart to analyze the events leading up to the crime

So, what is exactly wrong with the muscle? Locked up? Hmmmmm

That sounds WAY to familiar. Almost exactly a year ago that is basically what happened to me. I think I had done press the day before but nothing heavy. I woke up in massive pain and locked neck/shoulders. After 2 muscle relaxers, Vicodin and LOTS of ice it was better after 24 hrs but then my shoulders got worse. Slowly my right shoulder got better while the left kept getting worse until my recent surgery. If it was me I would lay off all weights for a while and dont do anything to stress the shoulders.
Again, lots of ice. That helped me the most.

In my experience in life so far is be extremely careful when it comes to traps......
I tore my trap muscle about 8 years ago. Had to keep my arm in a sling for a couple weeks. I never knew how interconnected the body was until this injury. This affects every other muscle in the back/shoulder/arm of the affected side. It still gives me problems to this day. It also made me change the entire way that I lift. Even though it sucks you went to the hospital id say your very lucky because it could have easily been something crazy like my injury.
Keep on truckin

LOL I never though about it that way. So you are saying they call guys and girls mate? I always though mate was male gender only? Hopefully in this case I'm wrong... Personally I only let female give me massage due to it's intimate nature. Now we know there are a few who dont seem to have that natural male no touch rule. Speaking of, is it time to bump the gay stripper thread? Where is anabolicboy?

Chiropractors are GREAT, in the right situation. Mine actually does A.R.T. auto release therapy that is a type of pressure point massage, stretching and chiro.
Good on the ice. 20 min on, 20 min off at least 3x in a row and 3x a day. Speaking of, I need to ice my shoulder...

You got valium for your trap muscle locking up? Mmmmmmm valium
-
05-14-2012, 10:05 AM #32
That sucks man! Traps are kinda tricky IMO..... I can do dumbell shrugs, smith machine shrugs holding the bar behind my back, and high pulls without issue anymore..... but if I use a barbell and do regular shrugs it feels like I have a burning needle in my left trap that runs a few inches down my spine. It happens every damn time.....
Hope the recovery goes well man.....

I heard about these types of injuries...
they happen to short people.
Then they die.

I didn't read all of the other posts but i definitely recommend a chiro after the initial inflammation goes away it will help get your cervical vertebra moving appropriately and they can do graston and like someone said ART to release any scar tissue. orthopedic surgeons always recommend surgery.
Good luck and rest and do try a Chiropractor they are on every athletic sports team for a reason.
