Rosetta Stone?

Anybody have any success using this to learn a different language?

Goin to Costa rica in October and I know un pequito espanol, but would like to be able to communicate better.

2 friends of mine used it. one for japanese, the other for spanish. they swear it made a huge dif.

the thing is, you pretty much have to use it every day...it can't be a once a week thing. (just like training!)

The army uses it and offers it for free via AKO, I tried the german version and it definitely was a good way of learning.

It definitely is a good way of learning; especially if you know a little of the language it would be perfect for you.

multimedia. They use pictures etc.
I can't remember if internet is required but I don't think it is. so if not, you can just take a laptop

Beautiful. Would really like to be fluent in Spanish. Been in a lot of situations where it would have benifited me greatly.

Also want to travel through all of Central and South America. Living in Vegas it helps also.

I did Levels 1 and 2 - I thought it was O.K.
I strongly recommend you find someone through a local university program or other similar type of deal where you can help them with English and they help you with the language of choice. that was much more effective for me.

i used it for Polish. It def works. I had questions though. I dont know if i would have gotten it if my girl didnt help when i got stuck.

I found the program helpful for basics but many of the words they teach in the south american spanish are not the words they use. Over all not that impressed with it and I tried for quite a while.

You are correct it teaches proper language. Just like we dont always speak proper english here. It doesnt teach you real world "slang"

This is what we want to do, but do not know where to start. Dont want to go take college classes. We thought thata community center would have some classes, but aparently not. All countries have their own dialect, but if I can understand and communicate, im sure I would be able to learn the slang while im there.

On a serious note though I have never tried it, learned Spanish as first language English second though I was born here. Took French for 9 years in school, honestly for French the best thing I found was just to go to a French speaking place or speak in French only with people who were fluent in the language.

i tried to use it for Arabic about 8 years ago. Was the worst $500 I have ever spent. I learned the language from listening to the locals speak, which IMO is the best way to learn so you can pickup on the local dialect

When I was a child, I grew up speaking Italian because my old man was from Sicily & didn't speak very good English, so learning Latin derived languages had never been a problem for me. When I was in the military, the rosetta system was very effective in teaching us quickly, in twelve years, I learned Arabic, Yiddish, Russian, German, Portuguese, Spanish & several African languages. We were then turned over to "a local" for two weeks to learn how to use the language properly, in other words, he thought us the local slang.

It will help you, but keep in mind the Spanish they speak in Costa Rica is different from the Spanish that you will learn with Rosetta Stone. RS will teach you proper European Spanish, what they speak in the Latin American countries is a mangled version of that. You will be able to understand basic conversations like ordering food and things like that, but will have some difficulty with more specific and complex situations.

Which part of CR are you going to? Stay away from the capitol, it's a total shit hole!
