    Thinking of dumping Netflix........

......since Starz or whatever divested from Netflix, it seems the availability of new releases and other stuff seems to have waned significantly. What I need is to be able to get the "on demand" through my WII.

Tried HBO GO for a couple of days, and they really have a small selection.

    Any other thoughts?

You know somebody would make a fvcking fortune right now if they would open a local video store. Netflix and On-Demand never have what I want to watch. All this move to online crap did was force us to buy movies we didn't really want to see more than once.

Besides, going to the videostore and spending an hour trying to figure out what you want to rent was part of the fun.

    use newsgroups.

yah, you gotta download them to your pc - but it's fast as there is no peer 2 peer file sharing. all tv shows a movies are posted 0 day. lots of bluray/MKV rips.

I use a pc dedicated for home theatre. OR you could use a "Western digital tv live plus" and external hard drives. they will play pretty much any format you throw at them.

i have 18 2tb drives full of movies and full series of tv shows. my husband thinks i'm nuts

this is why we switched to HULU plus ...take a bit of getting used to compared to netfix (it has brief commercials on the TV shows) but we love it more than netfix now

Is Hulu plus a pay by the month deal or per movie?

I've been using Amazon Watch instantly and Vudu, but it gets pretty pricey paying per movie/episode.

I run a tower straight to my TV. I have 2x 2Tb drives full of bootleg shit. I have way more movies than NetFlix and most older shows.

I don't pay for crap nor do I intent to. It took me ages to save this much shit.

I had Netflix long time ago but got tired of the long delays for anything good or new and a lot of the new releases not available, this was before on demand.

I tried them again a couple of months ago since they offered 30 days free. Most of the movies I wanted to watch no matter how old was not available via instant viewing, on demand and even the DVD had long wait times. I dropped them before the 30 days.

I find some full movies free on Youtube believe it or not. Vudu looks like they have more than anyone else but it's $$$$

I use to do the newsgroups all the time but it's time consuming and a PITA to convert sometimes. Instant gratifications can be a real bummer sometimes. lol I'm learning to just wait or wait for my office mate who is still into newsgroups to download and burn them so I can just borrow/copy from him. I watched Men in black 3, Battleship and Avengers this week. Quality is good most of the time and sometimes it's DVD quality.

I am disappointed that new movies never come to Netflix. I use it to watch entire TV series (30 Rock was fun, starting Mad Men soon), anime and documentaries. It is still a solid value for me, but not as impressive as it could have been.

We still pay too much for cable, including the movie channels but might dump it soon. We DVR a few shows, but that cannot possibly be worth the high bill ($100+) we pay ever month. Actually, it seems like new movies don't even come to cable very often - or maybe I just don't care about them by the time they come to cable.

We have started to go to the movie theater more often...old school.

I fvcking hate cable. I'm spending $180 a month on it and half the fvcking channels are in Spanish. I don't speak Spanish and I don't want it on my TV. But they force you to get those channels because they include them in your package. I hate COX. I wish they'd drop the price by allowing you not to include the channels you don't want.

So i'm goinng to cancel the hulu plus. shame.

I'm thinking about dumping Netflix somewhere down the line, too. I've seen all there is to see. I'm a monster consumer of media. I've tried Hulu but was offended that I had to watch very annoying ads even though I was paying for the service. I pay money so I don't have to see ads. WTF is that? It's just going to take time to work all this out. There are shifts in the industry happening and the cable companies and content producers (Hollywood) are fighting it tooth and nail. They will ultimately lose and we will eventually have a pay-for-what-you-want system that really works.

Patience is the key here. My only problem with Netflix is content and if they can fix that, which I believe they eventually will, I'll stay. Netflix has started producing content. The series "Lilyhammer" was actually pretty good. Google is also beginning to produce content via Youtube. Keep your eye on these big internet companies, they don't have to play by cable company rules.

I never ever seed anything. Thats what gets you in trouble. You never download brand new movies either. No matter what the quality is always going to suck and that is what gets you in trouble.. While I am downloading it to my pc I am transferring it to my tivo so once I am done I delete it off my pc. Never seed anything. Let people outside the US do that.

I agree. But that's where I'm going. Hollywood is fighting the internet proliferation of it's products like there is no tomorrow, because they see it as no tomorrow for them. This has been a very hot topic on tech blogs as of late. A leading blogger, Joshua Topolsky (theverge.com) recently had an exchange with Ari Emanuel (big time Hollywood agent, "Entourage" is based on him) on the subject and Ari Emanuel became infuriated at the notion that Hollywood needs to adapt to rapidly changing technology and methods of distribution, or be left by the wayside. It's complex and hefty reading, but interesting if you're into the subject.

Netflix beginning to create original content rather than try to jump through hoops and fire to license Hollywood's content is just one of the paradigm shifts that we are starting to see.

I wasn't saying Netflix is better, I was agreeing with you. I was saying that we are in the midst of a shift in the way media is produced and delivered. It's causing a flux in the industry and there are many factions with different interests. Hollywood wants to pretend that they can stick to their old way of doing things, but it's kind of hard to ignore the fact that 30% of all internet traffic in the US is Netflix.

I wish cable was a la carte, but they know we will only subscribe to five channels. We may just give up on cable and go back to the theater and red box. I also think they should not be able to charge you more for cable internet if you cancel the TV channels.

I did a one free week of Hulu plus so I could get caught up on a few weeks of House that didn't record on my DVR. After watching the House episodes I went through their selection to see what they had...and they didn't have a single thing I was even remotely interested in. At least Netflix has anime and documentaries.

You know COX royally fvcked me. they made it so that if I get rid of my phone service through them (I use my cell entirely and don't even know my house number), I'd have to rent a different cable modem through them which would not only cover the difference of getting rid of the phone, I'd end up having to pay them $5 more per month. I hate their bundled packages. And really, except for baseball, football and the science channel, I don't even watch TV at all.

They should just focus on providing quality product at fair prices instead of trying to figure ways of raping the customer out of his hard-earned money.

These bundle packages are the shittiest idea they ever came up with. If DSL or wifi had the same bandwidth cable has, I'd just tell COX to go fvck themselves. I think I could live without cable TV just fine.

vonage is funny. cheap price for the phone, but you need hi speed internet access. not too many have this without the $1 or $2 extra for the phone. which makes vonage a moot point.
