What I get to do 50hrs a week (Ironwork)
This is a taste of some of the things I get to do at work, and why I stay in such good shape.

I am in a physical job myself. I put in 55 hrs last week. Ugh the weekends are so short.

Always wanted to get into iron working. Just don't have the opportunity in my area. Oddly enough though my old trash job was only a few spots behind iron work on the list of most dangerous jobs.

Damn that's crazy man. I sit at a desk in my house for 9-10 hrs/day. I always wrestle with the idea of going to work on an oil rig or doing something that gets me outdoors doing manual labor. Part of me is pretty jealous of you.

The views are great, but I have also worked 800ft inside the earth(mines)....I like the different job venues, but it is getting harder. I have met some great ppl and some crazy MF's. all in all it is the job for me. :-)

That sucks man. I thought you meant it the other way round at first. I've known non union guys that made union scale because there were union employees on a job.

Its not like I jumped out on the iron first day and ran..........it takes some getting use too, no matter how comfortable you are, in the back of your mind your always aware. Some of the adrenalin experiences I've had with swaying building is a rush. But that is just one of many facets of ironwork, their are many, some guys just do re-bar and stay on the ground......I prefer to do it all, 13 yrs and I still do tings I have never done..........Also It's much safer IMO than it used to be 10 yrs ago.

Do you have any welding experience through your iron working career? If so check out the railroad jobs. Car repairman starts at 19 and goes to 26 after a 2 year progression to full journeyman pay and then up from there I assume.

That was the pay for the job when it came up in my area. Probably worth more in an area with a higher cost of living. Here in my town I only paid 80k for my small 3 bed 2 bath. So that would be some great money here.

I feel ya, living cost in WV is some of the lowest in the country and I have been to a few places.

Agreed, been there done that. Worked cutting wood for a couple of years. Worked stocking houses with drywall, scrapping and hanging for a few years until it killed my back.
Worked my a$$ off in the factory for years to impress whoever and show a long haired hippy kid knew how to bust butt. It worked.
Now I'm older and wiser. OK I'm older and dont work as hard. Got the desk job working 40-50hrs a week getting paid more than I'm worth but I'm not going to complain. If I can just keep it for another 10 years....
Ironbeck, I would LOVE to be able to get up on one 800ft buildings and go DOWN in one of those deep earth shafts. Do you ever wonder what they are building WAY down there???
