    Moving to Las Vegas

My girlfriend and I are moving out to Vegas in August and I was wondering if any of you guys that live in the area might be able to recommend the best area to live in?

She is going to be working at UNLV so we want to be pretty close to there but I work from home so that is really our only concern.... oh yeah and safety.

    Any advice is much appreciated.

Summerlin is the best area to live in. The area around Rainbow and Cheyenne isn't bad either. Basically stay out of North Vegas unless you're in the new areas of that town. And don't move to Paradise.

Really though, why the fvck would you want to live in this shit town?

that's right. haven't seen them on here lately. so they are already in Ark? I think they are builing their home, and if so, will consume much of their free time

Is it really that bad? I've been trying to read up on it the past few months but I've read a lot of mixed decisions. I'm moving from Lubbock, TX so it surely can't be that much worse... I hope.

Well the whole casino/club/bar scene will occupy you for the first couple months, but you'll get burned out of that whole scene. Then you're stuck in a city that's cold in the winter and oppressively hot in the summer. Outside of the clubs and gambling there isn't much to do here. Crime is out of control. I've had 2 motorcycles stolen in this town. One of them was in the parking lot at the Stratosphere. Even the nice areas of town have gangs. And the gyms are full of the biggest idiots and douches you'll ever see.

The only cool thing about out here is the lax gun laws and fireworks. The Clark County Shooting Complex is one of the few havens in town where you're around decent people and doing something fun. I suggest you also get season tickets to the 51's.

All I can say is I'm glad I got a better job in Cali so I can leave this God forsaken shit-hole.

Sweet. Crazy, never thought I'd see anyone from good ol Lubbock in here. I've actually lived here all my life. I'm about to transfer to tech within the next year. I guess I'm one of the few that love it here haha. Vegas will be different man. From what I see on tv it looks cool.

I go to the Red Rocks and around Lake Mead a lot. But you can't do that year round in Vegas. It gets hot enough in the summer that you can kill yourself doing that stuff.

My opinion differs from Honkey_Kong...maybe because I have been here for 30 years.

No need to even try the club and bar scene if you aren't trying to get laid.

I don't think it gets cold here. Seriously, we rarely even need to worry about our pipes freezing. It gets down into the 30s but without snow or a lot of rain. I have family in Utah that laughs at us for saying it is cold.

Summer can definitely be hot. Personally, I love it. It was 110 today when I went food shopping and it didn't phase me.

I have not really experienced any crime in the entire 30 years I have been here. Well, my car did get keyed once. But yeah, stay away from the Stratosphere. A friend of mine tells me about gangs because he hears about them on the news but I have never lived in a neighborhood where they were...or at least they were not obvious. I have lived in decent neighborhoods for a while though.

This town has THOUSANDS of great places to eat - there are probably only a couple of better cities to live if you are into food. The Strip offers tons of things to do that cannot be found anywhere else. Most of the big bands come here on their tours. First Friday in the arts district can be fun if you are into that. The car scene is ok if you are a car guy.

I don't see this as a shit-hole. This is a cool town with a crap economy. Unemployment is high. A lot of people have lost or walked away from their houses because they lost 50% of their value. That also means it is a good place to buy, if you can find a decent job.

Thanks Johnny. I already have a job working from home so I'm good and my girlfriend got a internship at UNLV, which is the reason for the move. The conflicting opinions are pretty consistent with what I have read so far. Thanks for your input guys. We are looking forward to the move.

Sorry, I was talking in generalities about the town when I said, "...if you can find a decent job."

Good luck with the move. I hope you aren't going to be moving all your stuff yourself in August. It is going to be hot.

Oh I knew what you meant, I have heard about how the bad economy has hit the city.

And I won't be doing all of the moving... I'm putting my girlfriend to work.

Especially this year. We're already having 110 degree days, August is going to be hell on earth.

Just a few days ago, in the apartment complex, next to mine some tweaker got shot to death in his very own apartment. I could watch the whole event unfold with the police getting there and the chopper flying overhead from my balcony.

And it snowed a little last year when I was living over in Centennial Hills. I mean if you're used to snow you would say this didn't count.

Oh yeah the thing that pisses me off about this town the most is all the fvcking bums. I can't even go to the ATM at the Wells Fargo without some God damned bum begging for some change. And it's not like it's impossible to find work. They could go to Labour Ready, it's right on industrial. But they'd rather beg people for money and spend it on meth and booze.

You'll probably be alright for a year here. It's difficult to find work in this town if you want a job while your girlfriend's doing that internship, but you can find them.

And if some fvck says anything with "hella" in the sentence to you, do not hesitate to punch him in the face.

*** You know I'm probably going to miss this town once I'm living in LA and bored at 2am ***

I used to live in Vegas for almost 5 years, if your girl is going to UNLV then living in Henderson might not be a bad idea since you won't be too far

He could live in Pahrump and have his girl commute. At least then you'll have hookers and firecrackers

Good luck brotha. . . . I do not trust myself enough to live in Vegas.

I dunno, maybe I can pull it off.

But, I just came back from Vegas last night and I still feel very twisted.

I would shoot for some nice burb in Henderson. Looks pretty much like AZ.

The strip and night club scene will get old really quick and then you will learn to love Vegas. 4 hours from the beach, an hour from the mountains, airport that has direct flights almost anywhere, restaurants and everything is open 24 hours! Check out Henderson/Green Valley, Southern Highlands or Summerlin. Vegas is tough the first year, your friends will all come to town and want to party, you won't know many people and the heat will suck. Give it some time, the heat isn't that bad, the winter is mild and there is always something to do. Every city has bad areas and gangs, you stay away from them and you are fine. The grass is the same color no matter where you live.

No that's alright. I might enjoy going hunting or fishing in Canada during the summer months, but I'd be f[u]cked if I'd go there in the winter.
