Backgrounds--experience--lifestyle
just wondering who on the site has a college background? what their degree is in? and if you thought it was worth it?
currently, I'm tryna to finish my undergrad in business (management/labor relations) but i feel its taking too long going part time, i have 2 full-time semesters to go (8 classes). I just wanna stop and continue to work full-time/train and maybe find a part-time job.
and it doesn't help when lately i been hearing everybody say
'yea i went to college, graduated, but don't even work in my field"
"look at the success of 'John Doe' he didn't attend college"
etc...its like a mental fight.
feel like I'm with my time or sum thing.

I have a Bachelors in Exercise Science and plan on pursuing my Doctorate of Physical Therapy in the next year or so. For me, the opportunity is great with a DPT.
I have guaranteed jobs in a large facility when I finish my graduate work and already shadow many physical therapists there now.
If I were not pursuing my Doctorate I would more than likely be doing little in my field. Though I found the material to be very interesting and there are a few things that can be done with the degree, many are low paying with little opportunity to move up in the field.
Business is difficult to do much with unless you have a stellar GPA and plan on furthering your education. THere are just too many programs offered now a days where the degree has become much less enticing to employers. I have many friends who spent 4 years getting their business degree, with above average GPAs yet still cannot find work

I have a business degree, and don't work in my field either. But since you already are almost done, you might want to just finish. Do summer classes and blow through it. It probably won't help you land a nice job, but it will prove you can learn. If I had done things differently I would have either focused enough early on with one thing and gone for masters or doctorate, or I would have started working some place that pays 24 bucks an hour and has room for advancement and pays overtime, or just flat out worked harder at starting my own business.
My first degree I quit when I had about 13 classes left cause I couldn't stand it anymore, I don't really regret not finishing either as I probably would have hated my job. But I ended up having something like 185 credit hours when I finally got my bachelor's degree. A lot of years wasted into education imo, but I take what I can from it.

This is my fear. Taken on all this debt to land a mediocore dead end low paying job. My goal was to finish my undergrad n apply to law school but im getting discouraged with the amount of time it takes. Summer classes wont help me bus where im at they only offer gen eds not core classes. Ugh.

I have no degree and a great job, but I still wish I had gotten one. If nothing else I tend to feel a bit self concious when everyone talks about college etc and I didnt go. Also I would like to make a jump from general manager to pres/ceo level and my lack of education will be a challenge...

Getting my degree in Geomatics, one year left. I'll start at 80k a year with my current company and move up from there. Easy, enjoyable work. Education definately paying off. Tons of jobs out there in this field once you have your degree (degree basically gets you your ticketed to be land surveyor).

I'm a surveyor, no degree in it, limits who will hire me to some extent, but pay is somewhat comparable, but i think i have more room to grow here in this company, at least I hope. Only reason I would go back to school at this point is if paid for by employer and it was a master's degree.
As for summer classes, that really sucks its only general ed. I was glad to get some stupid accounting courses out of the way during summer, and a few others that were pointless.
And as for debt, a four year degree isn't worth getting into big debt over. I came out 12k in debt after all that schooling, just because I got to the end and wanted to just get it over with and focus, so took on the debt then.

Student loans are ridiculous and is an investment in my eyes. I have already racked up a hefty amount in my undergrad. I see it as an investment because I still have more to take out for my postgrad but the difference in starting salary is over double what I would make with my under grad and 10 years in my profession I will be making 4 to 5 times as much as I could with my Bachelors.
The thing that is hardest to look past is that 6 figure number for the cost of my post graduate education

I have a degree in business but am working as a boat captain. Alot of people think it has nothing to do with business when in fact it is a business. I deal with about $15,000 in expenses and income every month. Its a full time job. I dont think the degree has much value nowadays unless its a masters or above IMO.

Wow, great timing.
I am right at the point of thinking of starting school back up.
I am 31, have a one kid, own a house out right, have 3 decent cars, a credit score of 700 flat after a BK 2 years ago.
WTF do I do?
The only thing I have a degree in is automotive/diesel(I don't have any experience with diesel at all). Working in a shop is total shit, I had enough friends who did it and hated it. One has a fukd back now.
My last job was working for the only cable company. I know cable/fibre real well but I would need to move to get a job. I already had a few offers but my house is here.
I have no real bills so I was considering starting school for engineering possibly, but it seems so long. I tested in and I'm a semester behind on math 01.

Yep with around $500 per credit hour plus university fees, clinicals, and so on. Multiply all of that by the 143 credits in 3 years and add in living expenses, I'm looking at close to $90,000 with no financial help.
At least I am in state though. Out of state tuition is a little over $1000 per credit hour plus all of those fees and expenses. I could not even imagine how one could even repay that if they took it all in loans.
Luckily my starting base salary will be in the range of my loans and I have a guaranteed job lined up. It will still be no easy task paying it all back. I plan on living like a bum and working as much as possible the day I get out. Finding a cheap apartment for a few years and having my only expenses towards food. I have laid out a financial plan to repay them as quickly as possible and do without the luxuries for a few years.
All because the field has become so competitive that you must have at least a masters to become certified. The crazy thing is even with the demand for physical therapists, a masters is becoming obsolete. Therefore I am going for the next level.
All for the DR. in front of my name

Yes it is. If I had more faith in this being an option these days I would stop schooling as soon as possible.
The problem is anyone can get a degree nowadays from one of the numerous "colleges" that have popped up. It makes a degree almost necessary to start a career.
My father majored in Zoology simply because he liked animals and thought it would be easy. He has never worked with an animal a day in his life and is almost 60.
Came out of college and got a job with a large lumber company with no experience. A few years later he was a district manager. Eventually he opened his own truss company then a window business. THe window business became a multi million dollar business until the economy tanked and he and his partner spent money without worry thinking it was just a phase. The business failed and five years later he is in and out of construction sales

If you get a degree, do it because 1) you really enjoy what you're studying or 2) you know you can make money with it.
Otherwise, who cares.
In today's world you can be damn successful without one if you're smart/lucky enough.
