Your physique aspirations - how many of you were influenced by comic book characters?
I've seen many members here sporting comic book characters in their avvys (the Punisher, Bane from the Batman comics, etc.). And i'm just curious how many of us here were first influenced, even on a minor level, by our favorite childhood comic book characters that were very muscular and buff? Who was it from what comics? What were your reasons behind it?
For me, it was Venom from the Spider Man comics. Venom was my absolute favorite character from my childhood, and still is. I even have a gold foil cover edition of Venom's #1 issue when he first got his own series (there were only 40 thousand issues of the gold foil cover printed, I believe). I also own nearly all of the Venom comics I collected as a kid during the 90s, all in mint condition. I'm only missing maybe 3 or 4 issues out of every single Venom run, and I wish I could find them to complete my collection. I haven't kept up on the progress of the character since early 2000s, so I have no idea what's going on with him these days.
For me, Venom was absolutely awesome because his character is composed of 2 parts, the alien symbiote and Eddie Brock. Nearly all of you probably know this, but long story short, Eddie's life was ruined by Spider Man (his wife left him, his dad disowned him, and he lost his job and was relegated to a shitty journalist position). As a result he became violent and obsessive over getting even with Spider Man. He took to the gym to let out his frustrations and over time bulked up and became extremely strong. Eventually he couldn't take his ruined life any more, and decided to kill himself but not before going to church to pray first, which is where Spider Man ditched the symbiote and it found Eddie - where it sensed his hatred for Spider Man and bonded with him.
And i'm talking about the comic version of Eddie/Venom, NOT the movie, screw him. The character of Eddie in the 3rd movie adaptation was a whiny little bitch, I couldn't stand what they did to the character in that.
The Punisher was a close 2nd for me as well. How about you guys?Last edited by Atomini; 07-24-2012 at 04:46 PM.

I liked he-man, a bit silly but I knew I wanted a body like his.
You'll have it to google it yourself if you have forgotten what he looks like.

when i was really little it was popeye and he-man that initially made me want to be strong.
edit: I guess i can't leave out the hulk, had a dream I was a mini hulk and I was green and had massive muscles just shorter. Wasn't happy when I woke up.

The reality of the Eddie Brock / Venom storyline is actually brilliant compared to the movie. In the comic, Venom was so much more justified to hate Spider Man than the movie portrayal. They did turn it into a joke as you say. Just do some googling on the character backstory of Venom and you'll see. The thing I find interesting is that the alien symbiote itself is a character in every sense, and when Eddie and the symbiote combine they create a unique character in itself.
I remember he-man! I remember the cartoon actually, lol.

I was a dc fan boy and loved comic books but it never wanted to make me lift weights.
Watching this did. He was the main reason I started lifting weights

Atomini I just saw amazing spiderman it was actually pretty good. Is it possible they include the legit venom in one of those sequels? Was that in the amazing spiderman comic book or just regular spiderman?

Yup, Venom's first appearance (as the symbiote bonded to Eddie) was in Amazing Spiderman issue #299. God, I wish I had that issue, it's probably worth a lot. His first appearance in that issue:
To be honest, I actually didn't like the new Spiderman movie as much as the first. There were a few things they did better, but there were a lot of things that drew it back. There were a lot of strange plot holes and untied story elements... i.e. the robber who killed uncle Ben - where did he go? Did you notice in the movie he gets away and Spiderman never ends up going after him as he is supposed to? Rumor has it that a lot of footage was cut out of the final edits of the film, and that's why a lot of stuff didn't make sense. I'm sure they could insert the legit venom into one of the sequels, that would be awesome. It would be their chance to really get him right this time around.
BUT, and this might be better news... Venom is getting his own movie. Since about 2007 they've been talking about it, and in March of this year director Josh Trank has negotiated with Sony to direct it. The idea behind it is to make Venom an anti-hero (rightly so). Some other rumors have stated that the main antagonist is supposed to be Carnage, but that's uncertain.
Check this out if you want some solid info on Venom, here's a full profile: http://www.spiderfan.org/characters/venom.html

LOL a tattoo of Goku... at 19? That wouldn't have been a great idea, people would laugh at you. Unless you had 'over 9000!!!' tattooed on you as well.
