Lost a great man today.
Today my department lost a great man to an on going battle with cancer. He was responding well to chemotherapy but this morning suffered a heart attack at home and emergancy responders were unable to revive him. I considered him a friend, mentor and most of all a brother.
He spent 22 years in the US Army, 18 of which were with the Special Forces and Rangers. After leaving the military he became a Corrections Officer and worked the line for 19 years never taking a desk job when offered.
He would have retired next year. I know nobody here knew him but I felt it was important to let people know who he was.
Thank you for allowing me to be able to have this forum to grieve.

My condolences. Any time someone loses a battle to cancer it is tragic. An unfortunate consequence of many chemotherapies is the cardiotoxicity associated with these drugs causing irreversible changes to left ventricular fractions (a measure of heart function). Rituximab (for lymphoma) is one of the most cardiotoxic compounds used in treatment today.
Again, my deepest condolences and sympathy in losing a great person.

Losing friends is the worst thing in the world, especially if they are close. Its like losing apart of yourself. My friends that died in the this war, I will never forget them and you will never forget your friend. They mark us with there lives and they will never be forgotten.

Sorry for your loss brother. Given his background I'm sure he was not only a great friend but a quiet professional. I am grateful for his service and sacrifice and the path he helped pave for future green berets.

Working all your life to die one year before retirement, ouch.

Really sorry to hear this and very sorry that you lost a good friend. This hits home with me as my brother just started his first chemo treatment last week. They actually installed a pace maker device in his chest because they want to avoid possible heart complications from the chemo.
Again, sorry Tiger. Hang in there.

Thank you all for the comments. Can honestly say from knowing him and the way he was I never thought anything could take him. I do a lot of overtime and slept in the fitness center of the jail that morning. When I went in the locker room to shower in the afternoon and they told me he had passed my first response was, "F@ck you buddy nothing can kill him." Then our shift commander came in and handed me a black band for my badge and I just sat down on the bench and stared at it. Then I knew it was real. Again thank you for allowing me to have you to lean on.

He sounds like a role model for all who want to live life to their fullest. If only we didn't lose the good ones when there are a lot of bad people out there.
Sorry for your and your communities great loss.

My friend and mentor was laid to rest in Vermont Thursday afternoon with full military honors by the Green Berets.
True to his character he asked for no flowers and instead requested all the money to be donated to the volunteer fire department in his area to help improove thier equipment.
