I have friends that own guns because they are security minded, but not because they are afraid.
Many of them just love shooting because they grew up doing it and shooting is fun once you dig beneath all the political issues.
Having said that, I was raised by a crackpot survivalist gun nut that thought the country was going to implode and he would be at the top of the sh*t pile because he had tons of guns, ammo, water, food and fuel hidden. I am happy to report that he died last month without ever seeing his dream come true. Dick. That specific type of gun owner needs to have his gear taken away.

Ok..i'll bite (even though I shouldn't). I see no difference between collecting and enjoying guns or collecting and enjoying vintage cars or baseball cards.

I live in a police state NY. There are a bunch of anti gun laws. They try to put out the image that only nuts have guns and if someone has a few guns he is a terrorist. I have a few guns and even a CCW permit from another state. Speaking for myself I have never carried for self defense. I do not keep my guns in my house for security. Sole purpose of the firearms was shooting for fun. I have met some guys that are paranoid and would not leave their house without a gun. I guess like everything else each individual is different. Some guys like to hunt, some guys like to shoot target practice, and some guys are hording guns and ammo for the end of the world.

For some, there is a strong link. Just watch the National Geographic show "Doomsday Preppers"...and prepare to have your mind blown by the awesome combination of paranoia, stupidity, and guns (and obesity in most cases).

Nope, we have not talked in quite some time. His two sons got everything (he was an ex-stepfather) including the gold he was hoarding. I have no idea how much gold there was though since he "dropped off the grid" and worked for cash doing things like delivering pizzas.
Still, I gladly go without any benefits knowing that he is off this planet.
Do I sound bitter and spiteful? Yeah, it is because I am.

If I felt that I needed a gun to be safe, I would be moving ASAP.
That being said, I've always wanted to learn how to shoot a rifle long range and be accurate. Probably more of a boyhood fantasy if anything, but it takes serious skill to have a good aim, and I've never fired or even physically touched a gun in my life. In fact, the only guns I've ever seen in my life in person are a police officer's and in museums. Funny to think that 100kms away, I could legally own and easily acquire a fully automatic machine gun.

I'd be in fear without one. There's always extremes on both sides, but a gun will even the playing field for someone like me trying to get out alive with a BAD situation. Home invasions are up tremendously in CA, especially in the nice neighborhoods, and the police are being reduced due to budgets. There are some really evil people in this world. If there is a better option to defend myself then I am open to hear it.

LOL! Me personally, I own guns because it is a right that I have. I like that our gun rights were written to be used to protect us from tyranny, which seems to be prevailent in recent times. But overall, I like to collect them and shoot them with friends. I like camping on the farm and using night vision on the AR to pop coyotes that try to eat the calves. They are just fun and fun to collect. Everyone of my guns have a memory of some kind.

the government expects us citizens to be sheep.....
.....except sheep dont' carry guns.
If everyone carried a gun, I suspect that much of the brutality carried out by governments would be minimized.
Only when times are good do some fool themselves into thinking that the police have their backs.
When times are bad, those fools become victims, and wring their hands how unfair it is.
Do not be fooled into thinking there will not be bad times!

Too many fvcking liberals (and non americans) in this world with the strange notion that everyone who owns a gun or carries one is a "nut"........who fvcking cares what they think? Most are a bunch of hypocrites without a clue, they piss and moan about guns and religion the whole time talking out the sides of their heads about tolerance and understanding.....NOBODY is fooled by that bullshit double standard, DEC.... this is something you could never understand , why do you really give a shit.....fair question, no?
To answer the question.....yes!! Fear runs rampant amongst those who understand absolutely nothing about the principals that this country was founded on, let them live in fear and misery, they don't deserve freedom.

A quick hijack to illustrate my point.
Over in the 'Stan, there was a liberal associate of mine who absolutely detested our security protocols. he wanted nothing to do with security, and was passively beligerent with adhering to our security protocols. i used to get so angry at this guy. I openly told him on several occassions that maybe i should throw him from the roof top, is how frustrated he made me.
Well, well, well! HIS close friend and associate went to Bamyan in a "non armoured vehicle" and was chased down and executed by the Taliban. This was maybe 4 months ago. So now, in an email, he admits he is wrong and there IS a need for security, after all.....
Again, when times are good, the liberals want to take away our guns. But when times get tough, it will be blokes like me that will be able to defend himself and his famil when he needs to.

buy a gun, learn how to use it well, become aware of what/who is around you..
you won't be afraid because you are empowered..
but the world needs sheep too...The answer to your every question

I have..... and people are carrying guns on the subway in NYC, you call them criminals, if you liberals would abide by the provisions set forth by the founders of this country and quit living in fear.....blah blah blah. Again, if you are so afraid of freedom then you deserve to live in fear. Liberals are scared of a lot of things but they are absolutely terrified of a free man.

Not a misjudgement at all, you say you've "held" shotguns and rifles........but do you own any, can you use them, do you or can you own a handgun, do you carry one with you?............That's my point man, not whether or not you've held one...... do you understand why we Americans hold tightly to our RIGHT to keep and bear arms or are you a victim of the hogwash you see and hear on TV and youtube? Be careful the Libs are brainwashing you too and you don't even know it.

Jez man, held as in owned. And where did I mention America on the thread? It's a worldwide site. And yes I can used both weapons very well thank you, and handguns are illegal here unless held at a sports gun club and even that is being made difficult.
I don't know why you're going off on a big rant, more countries on here than America, I merely enquired into the primary reason for holding guns, here it'd be for sport or vermin control but some hold them via fear from society's bad elementsLast edited by dec11; 10-01-2012 at 11:20 PM.

Guns are mostly just a hobby for me. And yes, I keep them for security as well.
I had a college professor a few years back who was a radical liberal. I brought up the 2nd amendment with him expecting a good argument. Instead he voiced his overwhelming support for it! He said the founding fathers knew what they were doing, and that there's a damn good reason it ranks second. The moment the first is in question you know it's time to invoke the second! It really made me appreciate that. As Americans we may disagree on a lot of things, but what's most important is that we're free to. It's my firm belief that an armed citizenry is an integral part of that.

I feel it is always better to be prepared and NOT need it than unprepared and in need. Same goes for people hording food, survival gear etc. Nothing wrong with being ready for a disaster. Look at the last few years, they have occurred all over the US. How many places have been hit by hurricanes? Typhoons or tropical storms? Power outages for weeks at a time due to snow, ice, wind? Forced from your home due to wild fire? Ever hear of Hurricane Katrina? There are riots in cities every years although mostly small and isolated but what if one is big enough to shut down your local stores, gas stations etc?
Most people dont have more than a couple of days supply on hand. I try to keep at least a months on hand if I ration but I'm not organized by any means. I plan on changing that soon.
In a time of need ammunition can be traded for food so even if you dont have a gun it might be good to have around. If this small arms deal goes through with the UN getting ammunition in the future may be near impossible. Already they have shut down the most of the brass dealers use to buy from the military for reloads. Now it's all sold as scrap overseas and we cant get it so the price went up of course. Baby steps... No they wont just come take your guns but if they do it little by little and you dont have any ammo what good is your gun? Think about it.
Paranoid? I dont think so. I'm not a conspiracy theorist by any means and don't dwell on this stuff but it's good not to turn a blind eye to it either thinking it cant happen. Just ask anyone over 70 about what changes they have seen and what rights they have lost.
Just because you are paranoid does not mean they are not out to get you.

Ill bite. I have guns for multiple reasons. First, I grew up shooting tin cans all day for fun, its in my blood, I love to shoot. I look at it just like any other sport or hobby. I also have for personal and home defense. I treat it just like a car jack/spare tire, or a smoke alarm, or a seat belt. I hope to never need it, but will be glad Its there if I do. I have trained and studied law so that I minimize risk involved. Thats it. There are nuts on both sides of the fence, I choose to stand in the middle and take accountability of my and my families life, without obsessing over shit!!!!

I personally don't have any fear at all with guns. What I do have a fear of is the things people will do to other people, and for how little they will do it.
Quick story ... We know a girl who's stepfather was shot during a home invasion. 3 guys woke her and her sister up at gunpoint, tied them up in a closet. At first, they thought she was the mom, and they kept asking where the safe was. They knew exactly what they wanted, and it was this safe. The stepfather got up after hearing some noise down the hall, and they didn't even get it 2 seconds before killing him! The mom led them to the safe, they took his savings of $25K, and that was that. Everyone is pretty certain they he told someone at work that he kept his cash in that safe, which prompted this terrible event.
Someone knew this guy had been tucking his cash away, and for $25K they put a bullet in his head. Everyone knows he would have gladly just given the guys the cash, but then again everyone knows he would have been able to identify who it was too.
I can travel in peace knowing that my wife has 3 to 4 handguns within reach at any given time to protect herself. Hell, she had some idiot pull his dik out in the gym parking lot and taking a piss in front of her last year. He started rolling his tongue at her when she saw him. Hate to tell you that prick's odds when or if he ever decides to act upon his stupidity!!

i had 'em for a few reasons:
shooting cans etc
shooting reflectors on neighbours tv aerials (i know, i know, immature )
my family home is semi rural and my mother was mainly there alone most nights and there had been multiple violent break ins at that time so i taught her how to use the shotgun or at least how to hold it to point at a potential burglar
i would have taken pot shots at crows and magpies, although as i got older i started to feel guilty about shooting animals period
the government made it really awkward and tiresome to fulfil licence requirements (ironically, after the Troubles!) so i just sold them back to the gun shop

Remember when some Americans flocked to guns stores after Obama was elected because they feared he was going to take away their guns? We're all sheep in one way or another because we all have our own perceptions of freedom.

Yes you are, you just don't realize it........and I know that there are very few guns in NYC....except for the criminals.....that's my point.
You called me a shit kicking redneck......at first I couldn't understand why you were complimenting me, but then I remembered you were a flaming liberal and meant it as an insult........either way it makes me smile.

ah no, i didnt even in the first place, i work in the tourism industry and asked about why Americans are so likely to come out with outlandish requests and crazy questions, i meant it from a perspective of do Americans expect a diff level of service as in, 'everyone is going to do everything for me, i wont think for myself' or is it a case of rich ppl just treating ppl like dirt and have no common sense because they just throw money at things? ie, 18yr old with a platnum credit card didnt understand why his credit card didnt run the light socket in the room and cant we set it up like that?
all got lost in translation on that thread and i wound up being made to look like i hated the US, which i dont btw.
there was an issue with military stuff, an issue which i'd have with any nation, but thats been cleared up and put to rest.
i did give my own country the good old run down for what it is, it got a good old slating
yep, held over here means licenced to hold in possession. i'd be a right knob end if i'd of just meant i held one in my hand, you know me better than that lol
