Military press smith machine 265lb
This an old video I did in May, I just thought I would upload it for giggles ....since I was thinking about next week when I will try to rep out 315lbs on a smith machine (wish me luck lol)

Do they not have a standard military press? I usually do them standing beffore I'll do them on the smith machine if there is no military press spot. It's a good lift but I'd be curious to see how much you could get without the smith.

Same here, I do them right off the squat rack. I hit 135 right now, which seems way pvssy. But, on the smith I push 185 with solid 8 reps.
Yet I still do both, you get a different burn on the Smith.

I was doing reps of 240 or so on the smith, then decided to switch over to a different machine where you are sitting at a 45 degree angle. Holy shit! Once i took the pressure off my old arthritic back, I was repping out at 340. Not nearly the pain. Fairly comfortable actually.
Pretty sure part of the increase has something to do with the machine and not so much increased intensity due to reduced pain......

I dont do it free weight because one day i put 245 over my head hit 2 and my back felt a little weird....thus from that moment on....i used the smith machine since it feels like it supports my back.
Times Roman
"different machine where you are sitting at a 45 degree angle." - Isnt this like a incline bench press kind of thing then?? this is what I am picturing when you said it

Personally, I love the smith machine. Then again, I'm stuck in my basement with a smith and limited other equipment!
Nice work loki.

it's a gawdawful contraption. think of a normal military press machine, then slanted over at a 45 so you are looking up. so you are laying against an incline, and your angle of force is inline with your spine, just like a regular MP machine.
I tried looking for a picture on the web, and couldnt' find it. but your back is resting against the pad, and this helps minimize vertabrae compression issues compared to fully upright. and because the fear of straining my back is reduced, I can apply greater force.
having said that, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be able to do a normal MP with 340. I think it would be too heavy right now for me. I'm thinking a pound on this machine I'm describing is lighter for some reason than a pound on the free weights.
make sense?

Google ISO-lateral shoulder press

I like doing these free weight.
But, I still mix it up. 135 is still a bit of weight lifted above your head.
I do 85 pound dumbells. But, I just feel that safe free weighting like 150+ pounds yet.

I too enjoy it.
Ive seen Youtube videos where Heath sits the other way, with his stomach against the pad.
I've tried it, but it seems to put some weird stress on my lower back.
Anybody else?

A 315 single is nothing to sneeze at!
NO WAY.
Good for you.
Training alone sucks, I know.

Just wondering...When I use the smith I only count the plates cause I read some are counter balanced or very light. Is that what you guys do?

I lied. I thought the stack was 340, but i looked at it today, and the stack is only 330 (don't wear my glasses in the gym). I did nail out 12 reps though. The set before that was 300 and i pounded out 17 reps.
maybe i should put this lie in the confession thread? =)

I hitting 270 for 6-8 reps. At 180#. That's 6 total plates. Not bad I think.
