Where are you located? I ask because you need to gauge the IT market around you. What about desktop support do you like the most? Dealing with the OS/File Permissions/ACLs? Or do you like network connectivity/FW/Security?

I would recommend Security/Networking. Probably get into Networking before you go Security honestly. Networking has a lot of the ACL stuff that you've been dealing with... (File Permissions on Windows=ACLs on Linux or Networking)... And it also obviously deals with networking. Pay scale is much higher on average in networking than systems administration as well. I started out my career networking and got my CCNA-CCNP and some VoIP specialties. Boston should be a good enough market too. If not, you can always move to Austin as IT unemployment here is at like ~1%ish

Depending on your skillset and experience level, moving up to management is what I would suggest.

You should have at a minimum a 4 year degree. do you?

From IT/Desktop or user support I got into a data center where I did rack, stack, cable, build and trouble shoot servers. From that I got into the one thing I swore I would never do, Routers. I like it now, sort of.

Networking; Routers; Switches; are the 7 layers of goodness in the IT world.
