They have been in bad financial shape for a long time and filed BK twice since 2004. They obviously have some operational issues above the cost of the unions.
As much as it seems like the unions were playing hardball, it is sad to see 18,000 people losing their jobs. I think I read Hostess wanted the workers to take a 30% pay cut?
I don't think the union broke their back, but they added the extra weight that became too much to bear.

I heard about that this morning.
RIP Twinkie....
Never in my life would I have thought Twinkies would ever stop being made. Never would I have thought that when I am 80 years old, i'll be saying to the youth at the time, "you know, back in my day we had these delicious things called Twinkies".
I'm going out to buy a box of Twinkies right now, and i'm going to never open it. This shit is going to be collector's items one day worth a lot of money, mark my words! Besides, all the chemicals in the Twinkies give it a preservable shelf life of something like 30+ years!

yes God bless unions is right! im a union member and we owe a lot to unions as workers. 40hr work week. 8 hr work day. overtime pay. medical benefits and retirement. the list goes on and on!

They are liquidating. They will be selling their assets (including intellectual property) so someone will be making Twinkies again soon. It is not a brand that will die.
All the legends about long shelf life are untrue. It may not be good food, but it is food with a normal shelf life.

It's those damned unions that caused all this mess! Get rid of those unions I say and we will have smooth sailing in America. That's why I wanted Romney to win as he was going to bust all those unions left in America so we can compete on a level playing field with countries like China and India. So what if we lose all benefits and healthcare and retirement. And you know we all can live on 47 cents an hour wages. Just because it will take 2,300 years to pay off your home loan but hey it could be worse.... or could it..? Oh and no Honkey Kong this wasn't meant as a slam against you or what you wrote. I'm just being facetious tonight..lol But on a serious note Hostess Brand finally busted their union, which they have wanted to do for years. I don't see anyone in this economy willing to take a 30% cut in pay and still be able to keep ahead of the bill collectors. What are we down to now about 10% unions in the States whereas back in the 50's we had about 60-70%. I know a lot of people hate unions but they are still needed IMO to help keep the middle class what they have fought for over the decades, like so many sick days allowed per year, and bereavement day off for burying a loved one, and protecting ones job when an on the job injury occurs and the company just wants to let that employee go, which without unions they can and do so easily. Ok my soapbox is over..

sholva u had me worried for a minute man!
id also like to note i saw online about how when the percentage of US employees represented by unions is up, wages for non-union labor is also up. when its down, wages for non-union labor is down.
working at the port where i work (kinda redundant ) i am employed by companies that pay us kind of as a sub-contractor. we have a contract with the USMX who can tell those companies to go jump in a lake if they want to. ive seen guys who are company employees and have been there 25 and 30 yrs get fired with no notice or reason.
as a matter of fact 3 guys got fired today. one of em is my age (mid 30's) with a wife and 2 young children. no notice, no reason.
these same companies also have "full-time salary labor" who they work 80hrs per week so that the "part-time hourly labor" cant work enuff hrs to get medical benefits!! if it were not for my union this is how theyd treat us as well. or more than likely theyd get rid of us and pay some other guy 8bucks an hr with no benefits to do my job!
