Hey fellas and ladies,
Just back on for a bit. Missed you guys. Won’t bore you with my long story but will recap and say I must’ve needed that couple of month rest because back at it and I feel better than I have in 3-4 years. Finding out how much not letting stuff go was costing me - I am referring to holding on to stress. I would carry it to the gym and then critique my workout even so when I left I just had more to stress about. Got derailed with the divorce and took a while to get back on track but all g2g now.
Working on a serious mass plan with Gearheaded, did a recomp with great results. But now, I simply feel like a beast.
Will read here and catch up moving forward, log in a few workouts and maybe post scary pics at the end of the run.
Thought about you guys a lot, and not in a gay way, which I know will disappoint some. Just a good collection of guys here.

Nice to see you Trail, life just gets on top of us now and then. We are only human, we can only take so much before we are burnt out.
Good news that it is going good now, and good to have you back.

Just finished. Headed to the pharmacy now. Implant is in and I go back in 2 weeks to let him eyeball it and then let it heal for a few months. After that the "tooth" portion goes on.
Pretty much tooth removal drill and tap the bone for the implant base, screw the implant into the bone, torque it in, some kind of patch with "growth factors" in it, and a figure 8 stitch.
I always cut up with the ladies wherever/ whenever I can. Mrs. AG knows I'm a clown at heart, LOL. The ladies asked me how I felt and I asked them if it was as good for them as it was for me.Last edited by almostgone; 04-11-2019 at 03:40 PM.

Thanks, Prox. I got lucky, but happy I could help.....I'm usually not good with children; not in a perv way, LOL.
I just generally have a rough time connecting with them. Probably a good thing we never had children....I'd probably royally fvck up a perfectly good child's head. There are 3 loves in my life: my wife, my English mastiffs, and my weightlifting....Man, my wife gets really pissed when I get the 3 confused...

Okay, leg day today. First times in too many months to count. I’m older and wiser now so going to ease into legs with some high volume, solid form sets. My goal is to be able to be able to lower and rise from the toilet seat in two days with only moderate pain (hemorrhoids not withstanding). I hit chest so hard this time after all the down time that it was sore under my nipples, haha. If I had been on more than a week I probably would have upped the adex.
Looking for an active range that will not overload my knee and swell it up again on the leg press and squat press. Can’t do squats. Just too much load on the knee and it swells with anything more than a bare bar. No extensions. I’ll do the hammer leg press and squat press and vary foot positioning to hit more inner/outer, then hammy curls and calves. Not a lot but intensity is there right now, so looking forward to seeing what size I can gain with the modified range of motion and also how deca on board does with the knee overall.
I have a program being written up so I’ll see what’s in there as well.
What is an optimistic but reasonable gain in circumference for quads on a 12 wk mass phase with the limitations of no squats or deep press?

Older and wiser is key for sure! Take it real slow getting back into leg work. I'd also advise shortening the range of motion. My ortho recently advised me to shorten the range on several different exercises as we're not kids anymore. It will also help with longevity. The knee gel injections I had at the beginning of the year really helped my knee as well. I'll be repeating them every 6 months as insurance allows.
When it comes to squats not sure why that one movement causes such immediate swelling as opposed to the other movements. Unless you high bar squat and your knee goes way out beyond your toes. If so, try switching to a low bar / hip type squat. It's what I've always done. Knee's barely move forward at all. You should get growth back, no clue how much though. That said, you're in good hands with your program.

Thanks Kel, was hoping you would chime in with the leg routine. I think the thing with squats may be the angle and the force required for the concentric/lifting phase of the movement. It’s easier to control on a leg press, and doesn’t require so much force probably based on the way the cable machine mimics weights? I tried bare squatting and my knees go in front of my toes a third of the way down and beyond, even keeping my back arched and staying as upright as possible. Not sure, but each trial has resulted in mild to moderate effusion then I’m down until the effusion gets drained or resolves. Might be worth brain-storming though!
Do you think squatting in a Smith machine might help as I could adjust the angle back a little in the Smith that I could not with a free bar?Last edited by TRA; 04-12-2019 at 01:54 PM.

Not interjecting, but I would give it a try. I'm betting part of your issue is balance ( which is natural), the Smith would help with that. Nothing wrong with squatting in a Smith machine if it works for you, IMO.
Just try it dry bar in the Smith at first and see how your knees track compared to your feet.
Edit: Trail I don't remember if you in a home dungeon or go to a gym. If it's the latter and they have a dedicated belt squat machine, maybe think about test driving that as well.Last edited by almostgone; 04-12-2019 at 02:50 PM.

Actually you were interjecting but I welcome your suggestions/advice!
That’s actually funny because I know it’s because of my balance but I didn’t want to admit it in an open forum, haha. But you know what they say, big ego, little legs...so yeah, positive that is the issue, especially when it gets even remotely heavy (for me, not what you guys would consider heavy). Part of it is because my R foot points out a little more than left due to all the knee injuries and I think I favor it in a way that is necessary or I couldn’t do any exercise under load. That movement with my lagging legs results in a fair bit of tippage to get the bar up. That is why the Smith seemed attractive. Glad you called me out on it. I will give it a try. Hell, at this point I don’t care if I have to lift in a tutu as long as I can get some size back in my quads.

Re: In bold above, I was trying out my Kel humor. Had to get you back for making me mentally picture popping a gooseneck cap with my stitched gum.
No shame in admitting a balance issue, everyone has them....just varying degrees. If the Smith machine helps, don't hesitate to jump in there and squat away if it feels comfortable.
I'm anyone gives you any grief, tell them to go stand on their head and piss up a rope. There are 3 loves in my life: my wife, my English mastiffs, and my weightlifting....Man, my wife gets really pissed when I get the 3 confused...

Yes to smith squats. Treat it like a regular squat or adjust it as needed. Again, I prefer low bar squats. Google "low bar squats" and you'll get plenty of video's to review. Step one for me with squats is to push the hips back to start the movement, this helps to keep the knees in the correct path, imho. If you start with the thought process of bending the knees first, you're screwed. It'll make more sense to you when you get under the bar and try it. Curious if you've tried a wider type (sumo) squat and how that felt on your knee?
Since my ortho said to stop doing extensions I'm following the below rotation. It changes but you get the idea:
Stationary Bike: 5 minutes prior to every leg workout (almost cardio)
Squats
Vertical Press
Seated one leg eccentric hams
Seated normal ham curls
Stiff legs (probably every other workout)
Calves standing and seated
Next rotation I'm just reversing things a bit:
Vertical Press
Squats
Hams
Calves
Next:
Hams
Verticals
Dumbell squats (wide stance holding heavy powerblock horizontally between legs)
Lunges if knees feel ok
Calves
Basically I like to take every third workout off from squats. Just to give myself a mental and physical break.
All that said, if something hurts immediately stop doing it. We are all friggen stubborn here. It's the nature of the beast. Learning to listen to our bodies is one of the hardest things to do imho. If something is irritating you drop that movement for a while. There's always another exercise to replace it. Don't keep pounding away at it to the point it leads to a debilitating injury.

Hour yoga (intense - different instructor)
Legs - starting over so stayed with 3 x 12 and lower weights.
Low bar squats on Smith
Sumo on Smith
Lunges on Smith
Seated leg press
Glute machine
Abductors
Adductors
Seated calf raise
Laying leg curl ( very difficult)
Feel good about this although weights low.
Took a quick self assessment.
- Collar bone showing from throat to shoulders
- lacking symmetry in arms. Right more definition esp biceps
- biceps shrinking
- triceps teeny tiny
- lost my booty
- legs are lean with less muscle
I’m running caloric deficit and posting a 2.5 lb loss this week. I’m within 3 pounds of my lowest since joining this forum but body comp is less muscle with less inflammation since cut out all sugar and all flour.
I’m focused and feels good. I’ll be at gym tomorrow!

Back from a Friday to Saturday stay in Stockholm with my wife. First child free break in a year. We shared an amazing steak, rating this one among the top I ever had, and an absolutely fantastic hotel. Had quite a bit of wine and on our way back in the elevator my wife grabbed me and gave me one of the most passionate kisses in a long time. Fair to say this was one amazing evening.
Tommorow at some indoor water park with my daughter. No training this weekend.
