My tattoo procedure is as follows.
The 3 days leading up to my appt. I put non perfumed lotion on the area that the tattoo is going to be placed up to 3 times a day. This will ensure that the ink takes better. Than I will apply a small amount of A&D ointment on it throughout the day until it has scanned and the scab has fallen off. Do not pick at it. Than I will apply spf 60 Sun block until it is no longer dry and flakey. This will ensure that the color/ink stays brighter longer.
FYI... I'm 65% covered in tattoos.

My guy puts an ointment on it before i leave. I let this stay on for around 12 hours. Then i take a shower, no soap on the tat, and put either neosporin or sun block on depending on the time of year and my activities. I only treat it for 3-4 days as i don't bleed or scar easily. It's already in your skin and not going anywhere. I do not believe in putting saran wrap over the tat.

A&D is good but its greecy, which means you generally only have to apply it 2-3 times a day or anything that is fragrance free works well too but you normally have to apply it more often.

bepanthen but make sure you get the ointment not the cream.
He'll wrap it before you leave the shop. Take it off after 2 hours, wash with anti-bac soap without any aromas and stuff like that. Bepanthen it after and keep it always covered(do not exagerate) in the ointment. It should only look shinny, not covered white. Dont put bandades or stuff like that on it, it needs as much air as possible in order to recover. No sun for 2 month(then put strong sunblock on it, no baths or swimming till scabs fall off.
Make sure you take good care of it the first few weeks after getting it, till its healed.

First know, there is no one right way to do aftercare as most artists and collectors have their own methods...but there are some common truths.
First and foremost; keep it clean and use an antibacterial soap for the first 5 to 7 days as most of the major healing is done as noted here.
Most don't know this but the tattooed skin can take up to 6 months before it's totally healed...you just don't see what's going on underneath the skin.
For the first 3 days use bactatracine ointment and NOT neosporine as it has compounds that can draw out ink.
After us an non scented cream as noted...and use it on the tattoo for as long as you can. Skin that is taken care of and kept out of the sun will leave you with a wonderful tattoo!!!
On finding a good place I can only suggest looking first in magazines and seeing who is doing what. You will find artists and shops that are written about that can point you in the right direction.
Look at work on other people in your area and if you like what you see; ask about the artist.
Go to shops and look at the portfolio of the artists and start to make a list of whose work you like...this can be a lot of fun.
Once you get a short list set up a consultation with the artists and pick the one you are most comfortable with and who knows what you want.
DON'T RUSH THIS PROCESS!
Most men who get shitty tattoos and who regret it the most are the ones who do not take the time to find an award winning artist and get a good tattoo.
Look at the Chrysanthemum in my avi; this took first place for best small in a major tattoo show and was done by my best friend who in nationally known for his work.
Remember, when shopping for a tattoo artist it's buyer beware.
