No honestly I read this story and I felt bad for the guy. From what I understand there were even phone calls involved. My take is this. Someone knew who he was because of his football fame and decided to do this prank. Its either one of two angles. It was either intentionally masterminded to be malicious, or it was someone really fat and really ugly who just wanted to have a fake romance with him. It is possible. Sometimes really ugly people will hide behind a computer and instead of going to the gym or finding another really ugly person they do dumb shit like this. In the news article it said he had hours long conversations with the girl which leads me to believe it was this.

Don't know about Somoa specifically but there are cultures that have arranged marriages where the two never see each other face to face before the wedding day.

I "want" to believe he was duped but his teammates are coming out saying they knew something was up with his GF. So I'm skeptical.

I disagree. The guy brought up his GF and her death almost every damn time there was a camera in his face. Live by the sword dies by the sword.
