Sure why not. Does it say use by or best before?
Those dates are only legal requirements meat can last longer in good condtions. Does it smell fine is it slimy?

Watch out for the still pink thing. Some places add food coloring to keep the meats looking fresh. All it means when the when it goes brown is the remaining blood has drained out. If it's only been a day or 2 and it doesn't smell go for it. Any more than that and I usually just toss it to be safe.

So you know for the future: in proper storage conditions and if thawed properly (in the fridge not on the counter), meat can stay good for as much as 3 weeks after the "use by" date. "Aged" beef is just beef that's been stored at 34-38 degrees (standard fridge should be <40 degrees Fahrenheit) with a lot of air circulation for 28+ days. (The cold temp and air circulation keep the meat from going bad, and keep the blood and other liquids from spoiling the meat.)

That sounds good. But how long did it sit in the store before it was sold?

There are actually laws stating how long meat is kept between butchering and store shelves. (I don't remember the specifics anymore cause I've not needed them in years.) But, either way, if you can find a local farm source or butcher you'll do better price and quality wise. I've been getting my meat from a local farmer that owns a meat processing/butcher shop and it works out to an avg of $1-$2/lb depending on whether I buy whole, side or quarter. In his case, law requires that he hold onto and age the beef for like 14 days before he can sell/deliver it.
