What a completely fcked up year so far...

It's been 3 weeks to the day since we had to put our sweet girl down (most of you will remember the recent thread)... and today we had to schedule an appt. to put down our other dog. It's going to happen next Friday, 3/22 - eerily exactly a month after our girl.

This one is also nearly 15 years old. He's a pitbull mix that we rescued from a shelter when he was roughly 1.5 years old. I can't sit here and tell you he was a perfect angel (like our girl) through the years... he was a tough case and we've had our ups and downs... caused a lot of damage in a few of our residences over the years... but regardless, we gave him lots of love and hopefully a good life.

He already wasn't doing well, we knew it wouldn't be long - but I would have NEVER guessed we'd be putting our dogs to sleep back to back months. He started a rapid decline right after our girl left us. I kind of figured it'd be like that, but not THIS soon. The poor guy must be suffering though... he's the only one who spent more time with her than us. They've literally been together day and night for almost 13.5 years.

Losing her had to be tough for him... we as humans have the ability to reminisce, look at pics/videos, rationalize what happened to her and why we had to do what we had to do, etc. For him, she's just not there, plain and simple. One minute she was and it was business as usual, the next minute she was gone - and his world turned upside down. I can't help but to think that aside from his own fairly recent health issues, he's dying of a broken heart.

Jesus Christ though... what else? It's only March 2013, a complete shit year for us so far and the year has hardly begun. I need a break!!

Sorry to hear this brother. I think you hit the nail on the head with the broken heart. It often happens when one partner in an elderly couple passes; the surviving partner soon follows.

I know it's hard to think postively at a time like this, but soon the worst of the year will be over and things can only get better. (If this seems calous, that is not my intention)

Keep your head up buddy and enjoy your time left together. My inbox is always open if you need to vent or just an ear to listen.

Dogs are far better companions than most humans.

Hoping so brother. We're not out of the woods yet. Might be moving to FL which sounds great, but will have to take a (at least) 6 month detour staying at my in-laws... with a baby, etc. It'll be hellish. But, we'll cross that bridge...

GBrice, that's rough mate, I remember in your last thread mentioning your other dog was old as well. Had a couple of old cats that died about 2 months apart. Thats what happens if you get pets in two's or three's close in age.

Words can't convey how awful this is must be for you. Its never easy losing a pet, especially one that's been with you for years.

Greatly sorry for the loss of your companions .
It's always hard to lose a family pet they look to us for so much and in return offer all the love they have
    It creates a powerful bond.

Thanks brother. We never expected either of them to live as long as they did, so trust me I do realize how lucky we've been. Unfortunately, that doesn't make the pain of losing them any less...

Very true. They've both (especially my girl... can you tell I'm a bit partial!? ) given us so much... if anything, we owe THEM.

I know you lost two important members but in time you will find another couple of family members that will need to be adopted and saved also.

Its great what you did for those dogs and they showed you so much love with their loyalty!!!!

Hey gb, I can't imagine how you're coping with this. I'm very sorry for your loss and I hope you can find some comfort in knowing you are making a responsible and compassionate decision. Many people do not have the strength or heart to not let their pets suffer anymore and the result is unthinkable. It may not be easy, but it shows that you love your friend beyond words, and that's admirable.

You are welcome brother. This just goes to show "this" is more than what most think. We came together for a specific goal or interest to help each other. But, we also care for whatever a fellow member may be going through good and the bad. Nice to no people havent giving up on one another. I can say im proud to have you all.

Sorry to hear about that man...my lab/blue healer mix is 14 and deaf/blind now. Rescued him from a shelter when he was 8 weeks old....It's gonna kill me when his time is up.

Nothing can ever replace those family members...but hopefully after some time you will decide to add to your family again.

    Best of luck to you.

Mate you have nearly 30 years combined of memories from your pooches, that's something to be very thankful for. And many many more years of memories to create with your wife and little boy. All the best mate.

Thanks for reminding me of this brother... you're right about (so many) more needing our help. I have fantasies of getting pure breeds, etc. which I've always wanted - but I know when it comes down to it, we'll be rescuing another one or two from a shelter. Tis' the right thing to do when you're a true dog lover, IMO.

Thanks for your warm words GL... that's what we're trying to do... think about the dog and not ourselves. This one isn't as in bad of shape as our girl was, but in hindsight we let it go on for too long with her. Not TERRIBLY long, but too long nonetheless. Her suffering could have (and should have) ended sooner if we had been more on the ball and gotten our heads out of our asses. We're trying not to make the same mistake twice.

Thanks bro. I keep telling people over and over - I don't mean to sound preachy, but please, love that dog to death and treat every day as if it were his last. Never take him or his love for granted (that's the one thing I know we did right... we ALWAYS appreciated them and were aware of what we had) and when that time comes around, you'll know you did right by him and provided the best quality of life possible. That's all we can do for them.

Wow bro, that's rough and trust me I know exactly what you're going through - both of mine were pretty much deaf (look how I'm referring to both of them in the past tense when I still have my boy right next to me... ugh) but at least had their sight. Still sucks though.

How's his health otherwise? Hip joints, etc? Labs almost always have a tough time with hip dysplasia...

Very true brother and believe me, I'm very thankful for the amount of time we had... I remember talking about how they were old when they were 8... then 10.... then 12... seemed like they'd never go... still tearing ass in the yard at 13... but the last year or so hasn't been good for either of them. It's just that time...

    Thx my friend.

His hips are okay as far as I know. It sucks because he is my childhood dog, I got him at the start of the summer when I was 10 years old...and these last couple years I haven't been able to see him much because I've been in Japan.

That dog is literally the best friend I've ever had...we even used to sleep side by side in my bed for warmth in the winter time.

The only other thing I know about that's wrong with him is he has a few tumors on his skin...but they don't seem to bother him and the vet said he was fine so I guess it's a non-issue. I'd honestly give 10 years of my life to him if it were only that easy.
