Spanish Farmer Discovers Rock Used To Cure Ham Is £3.4 Million Asteroid

    http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2013...ncid=webmail19

A rock found by a Spanish farmer has been revealed to be an asteroid worth $5.3 million - 30 years since it was found and put to work as a press for curing meat.

Faustino Asensio Lopez found the 220-pound, 18-by-12-inch rock in 1980 while tending livestock with his father in their field, near Ciudad Real.

He assumed the rock was a remnant from Spain's civil war, and put it on the family's patio.

Eventually it was used as a ham press to cure meat.

But after he saw a TV show about meteorite sightings in Spain in 2011 he got in touch with a geologist - who was startled when Lopez showed him the prize object.

The rock turned out to be a pre-historic metallic meteorite, part of an asteroid or even a comet that hit the Earth.

The Spanish newspaper ABC said it was the fourth such meteorite to be found in spain - and the first since 1950.

Part of the asteroid is now on display in Madrid's Mining Museum, according to the New York Daily news. A fragment was used for testing, and a full-scale replica was made for public viewing.

5.3 million dollars, literally fell out the sky for that guy.

Crazy that it was thought of as next to worthless and used to cure ham. I never realised fragments of discovered meteorites fetched so much money!

Imagine owning something like that for 30 years and not having a clue where it was from or it's worth!

Dude needs to have some entrepreneurial spirit and market them as extraterrestrial super food and make billions....

Yeah but 30 years ago it was only worth 100 bucks. lol

    Question for you British fellas:

Whats with the word c*nt? Is that like us (North Americans) saying sh*thead? Or goofball? Just asking because that's a fairly course word over here. Dont get me wrong, not giving you grief by no means! Just wondering aloud, gents..and i didn't think this warranted separate thread.

It is a harsh word but when you talk aboit Roberts both words are used in conjunction with each other even though the meaning the same.

It's pretty course over here but it's a word definitely used a lot.

It can be used to insult or as a term of endearment, and it's definitely in how you deliver it. If you call someone a "cvnt" cause you are pissed off, they will know it and will definitely get the arse over it! lol

The English language in England is so old now, that words can literally be applied to anything, but a lot of people can instantly understand their application. Christ, I used to know so much rhyming slang and that's due to my upbringing in some of the more livelier parts of London. I haven't lived in London for some time and i've been fortunate to travel the world, and i've forgotten a lot of rhyming slang but now and again it creeps into my every day chit chat.

Like if I told you to "use your loaf" would you know what I was talking about?

EDIT: He's right, i've never met anyone called Jeffrey that is remotely intimidating! lol
