    Becomming a PT

Hey guys, ive been searching online and I have found numerous courses and distant learning courses covering all sorts of aspects of fitness, nutrition and sports coaching.

My aim is to complete some distant learning courses and become a qualified personal trainer. In the UK, is there any sort of accreditation that is favoured upon? Are there specific qualifications I should be looking for? Or can anyone complete any random sports courses and become a PT? Im not looking to make a career of it, its just something I have always wanted to do, specifically I want to get into Nutrition/Dietitian, I cant seem to find many of these courses via OpenUniversity.

Any PTs from the UK? Any suggestions or feedback greatly appreciated, Im nearing the end of my Electronic Engineering degree and I want to start planning my next move

If you're going to get an EE degree, why would you want to get a job as a PT? You'll make a hell of a lot more money as an engineer. You'll also have a job where you can sit in a cubicle/office all day and eat as you work so you can easily get all the meals you need in.

Because its not my passion, I've been studying engineering for 5 years now and during that time my interests have shifted more towards training, and especially since I found this site I have really discovered an interest in nutrition and training. Whilst I could make more money as an EE, I just want to get this qualification, if only to improve my own understanding.

Eh, I can understand chasing down a dream. I've been chasing mine for a long time too. If I were younger, I'd do things a little differently though. Bills don't get paid from passion and dreams. Life can really suck when you don't make enough money to be able to go out and do things. It's hard to train right, when you can't afford to buy the amounts of foods a lifter/bodybuilder needs to grow.

And I'm not going to knock the profession of personal training. But very few of them make enough money doing that. You ever see how many have side jobs of being drug dealers? Or other various jobs?

Besides, the EE world is huge. I can't honestly believe you're not interested in ASIC or MEMS design. Especially after 5 years of learning all about Maxwell's equations and all that hooplah. Maybe you're just a little burned out on it? School does that to you.

That could well be it. I just dread learning more about it. I either want to get hands on or move on. The PT thing is just to facilitate a dream for later life, I want to own a gym. So of course ill have to do many years of something I don't like (EE) until I can afford it.
I was heavily interested in weapon design electronics. A lot of money in it too!
My final year project is next year and I need to submit a proposal next week!

You might want to look in to something that combines the two. Ever think about the bionic field?

Did you do any minoring in mechanical? Process engineers make good coin too. Have fun with your final project, don't just pick something.

Ok, mate you need to get a qualification that allows level 3 REP's as stated. Level 3 is PT qualified whereas level 2 is only 'fitness instructor' qualified. You probably need level 3 for the relevant PL insurance but you will need to check that. The public have access to the register so they can check your credentials. There is also an advanced level 4 now but that will hardly be worth it for your needs.

As far as nutrition goes you can do a really really basic course and call yourself a nutritionist but you'll hardly be qualified. To call yourself a dietician you will need a degree. The Open University do not, unfortunately, do dietetics. I looked into it last year. The only way is a full time degree course and there are entry requirements though I can't remember what they are. University's are few and far between, the closest to me when I was in Cheltenham (and now) is Coventry. For the purpose of what you will need to know, this site will have plenty of the resources you need.

HK is right, there's no money in it unless you become a 'celebrity' personal trainer but I'm guessing where you are, celebrities are few and far between?

    Fantastic post BiB. Thank you

Yea I had noticed that the OU didn't have a great deal regarding nutrition/Dietetics. Ill look into the REP courses and see what's available for distance learning. If it comes too it i may just have to bite the bullet and stay in full time education. Which is less than ideal. This site has everything I could need, I just wanted to get something on my CV. If I tell people I read it on the Internet, they're skeptical, if you have a noobie useless qualification, suddenly anything you say is credible.

What're you saying about the south?
    Elizabeth Hurley is from Basingstoke.
Tom Croft was born here (England Rugby).
Tom Rees was born here (England Rugby).

    So there!!

Ha ha, how many of those people still live there?

My home towns only really famous person is Vic Reeves but he was only brought up there, not born there. But the, I choose not to live there anymore. I have trained a pro golfer, pro footballer and England international rugby player in my time, but even then, there was a) not enough money in it and b) too many people hire you but don't really give a shit about results and think one a week with you will make up for the other 170hours a week of abusing their body with junk.
