Fancy a one way trip to MARS?

BBC News - Applicants wanted for a one-way ticket to Mars

Talk of building settlements on Mars and sending earth settlers.

The catch is, it's one way. You go there. You live. No coming back. I'm hearing huge costs in the region of 4 billion, just to ferry over a small group. Every few years another group get's sent over, and so on.

I'd be interested. Might be fun, depending on the "breeding stock" that went along...

My thought would be, how would you police it? I mean, do you send them out there with weapons, no weapons? I just wonder how long before Cabin Fever would set in. I assume some of the group would be engineers, so that they could work on the base, on site, develop it to make way for more people. How many doctors would you send up? Botanists? Etc..

It would be tempting to sign up, I can see why people would. Wouldnt it be cool to be the first people of a new civilization? My first question would be 'is there a gym'? secondly, 'can I take raw AAS powder and brew some?'

I imagine the first groups of people to be carefully selected... If I had it my way, I would put 3-4 seperate colonies on Mars, and send all the big weight lifters and powerlifters to once, all the nerds/intellects to another, all the midgets/Dwarfs to another and then just have a seperate 'normal' colony... lets see how much those camps differ in 100 years!

no weapons, no police. (if there were weapons, way too much power in the hands of a few. and who would police the police? they wouldn't be police, they would be more judge/jury/executioner.)

    extensive psychologoical profiling.

pay these people a certain monthly income, but to their families. if an employee violates a rule, then there is a fee/penalty, withheld from the families income here on earth.

there wouuld have to also be a tribuneral, made up of maybe a dozen members, on a rotating basis, that make certain difficult decisions
