    Movie: Pain and Gain

Just saw this silly thing with Walhberg, Dwayne Johnson and some other guy I forgot his name. And the dude from Monk.

My son took me, and we were expecting a movie about gym life to a certain extent.

    We were wrong.

It's a comedy (and barely that). At one point, I called out "woop woop woop" like curly from the three stooges, becauuse that is what it reminded me of at the moment.

So don't be fooled into thinking this is a body builder movie.

If you want to see a comedy with some chuckles, then maybe.

And it's supposed to be based on a true story.

Overall, I'd say Pass until it comes to Redbox, and then it's worth a buck.

Well, your "Siskel & Ebert" chips feel a bit short because TR didn't know the movie was based on a true story, and that it was about two guy ripping off gangsters. lol

But gawd bless him, we love him.

    hey!

I knew this to be a "true" story cuz it said so at the beginning of the movie!!

btw, my kid was really talking it up for a month before hand. it was his treat, taking me to the movies. and even he said it wasn't that great.

    I'd give it a 3 on a 5 scale

Walhberg is one of those Hollywood hypocrites who have made a career by glorifying gun play, then comes out campaigns publicly against the 2nd Amendment. I just can't bring myself to give him any of my hard earned money. A shame too b/c there have been a few of his movies that I really enjoyed. The Shooter, Invincible, & Contraband come to mind....

Based on the trailers, The Rock looks like a monster in this movie.

My girlfriend is a Dwayne Johnson groupie so I got coned into going to this piece of crap. I like Dwayne and Wahlberg in most movies but this one sucked so hard light couldn’t escape. Times you were not the only one that thought movie was about gym life. After movie guys in hallway were all pissed because of how movie portrayed bodybuilders. I heard more than one guy stating that they thought movie was supposed to be about gym life.

Just watched the movie, other than being half hour too long, it was damn funny and the Rock has been working on his acting a lot. Would give this movie 4/5

I think if you're expectations are too high, you'll be disappointed. But if you go in with the mindset knowing its the Rock and Walhberg, then you may not be as surprised when you find the acting is not up to par. Its not like these two guys are known for how fabulous they act, or like they are A-List actors. Just keep an open mind.

And remember, its NOT about gym life. Ive yet to see a trailer that began like this, *in the deepest voice you can think of --> "Two men. Working out. lifting weights and living the American dream. How will they survive in the gym they call the jungle? Will they wait for a machine, or just push you off? Will they get huge? Do they love protein? This summer, watch this years number one super smash hit and find out for yourself. In theaters everywhere."

I go to all movies with the mindset that it's going to suck. Most times, I'm not dissapointed....because they do suck. Creativity has been replaced with guns, sex, and end-of-the-world scenarios. The same lame crap.

Creativity is kind of risky though. It's hard to come up with original stuff and if you did, you don't know if it's going to be successful. I mean I can imagine production companies are probably more inclined to go for what they know works than risk the farm on a new idea.

yah, he is, and he leaned out from just being big in GI Joe. You can tell he did a few sets before shooting each scene as he was almost always pumped for the camera...

I take it you didn't see "Silver Linings Playbook", "Argo", or "The Impossible"? Three of the best movies last year.

I saw two of them. My comment was more of a generalization that
80% of the movies I see and that ppl rave about, do nothing for me. The same 5 plots used over and over. And, I can't stand Ben Affleck
Needless to say, but this is MY opinion only.

I completely agree with you on the majority of movies out there. I see everything. But rarely pay to see it in the theaters. It takes a special movie for me to do that. (Besides working in the industry we get free screenings all the time) studios are out there to make money not great films. Sometime the two objectives line up but more often than not studios add something to a movie that will boost ticket sales in china or someplace. Lol

Mark Wahlburg did a cop comedy with Will Ferrel that IMHO was complete shit. But it was a huge success. People flocked to the theaters just to see will and mark together on screen. Same Canberra said for Mark and the Rock. If the budget was under control this film will be a hit despite bad reviews. Just because people want to see mark and the rock together on screen.

Sucks the filmmakers couldn't tell a great story too.

I would say that 90% of the people in the theatre last night were guys in different gym shirts. There was group of 15 guys from Gold’s there. Guys were flexing across seats to each other calling out challenges. “Are you sure you lift? You don’t look like you lift. Little *****.” Stuff before movie and watching the mooks interact was more entertaining than movie. Mickey if there was trailer like this.

Theatre would be packed with gym rats and they would probably have to close the place down because of all the testosterone in the air.

    Mick,

I agreed with nearly every word you wrote (in each post) until the above post. I like how you frame perspective, a silly comedy isn't supposed to provide a transcendental experience. Don't let a few lugheads reshape your already well-shaped views. I happen to enjoy the Rock as a mock-actor along with all the other crossover guys including Markie Mark (Funky Bunch) Wahlberg. The other guy whose name seems so elusive is the rather accomplished 24 yr old actor Anthony Mackie whose credits include 8 Mile, The Manchurian Candidate, Million Dollar Baby, We Are Marshall, The Hurt Locker, Eagle Eye, The Adjustment Bureau, Man on a Ledge, Gangster Squad, and the currently filming Captain America: The Winter Soldier, The Fifth Estate, and The Avengers 2.

I'm heading to see Pain and Gain right after work, and I can't wait! But then I'm going in under the auspices of the way in which it was meant to be appreciated.

If movies aren't a person's thing why go only to complain later? If 80% of movies don't do anything for you, either zero in on the characteristics of the remaining 20% and see only that type, or switch to opera, sporting events, or dinner theater. Going only to complain is infantile.

No rational person who has seen the Pain and Gain trailer could possibly expect a bodybuilding movie, so it's not the industry's fault if you go looking for one and are disappointed. Based on the trailer, one should expect to see a variety of slapstick humor which should indeed at times conjure up images of the Stooges, and not just because there are three of them! Heck, I loved all six of the Three Stooges. I can't tell you how many times I've heard people say 'Dumb and Dumber' was just waaay to stupid for them. Any idiot can ascertain from the title alone (wherein they tell you twice) what to expect. If you can't appreciate such a level of silliness for what it is, but continually attempt to do so anyway "who's really dumb?"

    Just my $.02,

    Have a good day fellas.

Thanks Lunk, but admittedly not everything is for everyone, and I certainly wouldn't recommend this to anyone who can't let loose and enjoy such a work, but I sure did. Man it wasn't knee slapping funny, but it was hilarious throughout, and these three guys were very well cast. As a true story, that's right it was all true, the storyline was already in existence, but the screenwriter did a great job of capturing the essence of their sheer ineptitude...WOW, a couple of times I just had to laugh out loud. Oh, and Lunk, the eye candy was superb, sometimes jaw dropping, sometimes pure drooling. Just a couple of examples that are too big to image, simply click here:

Yahoo! Image Search Results for bar paly
Yahoo! Image Search Results for Vivi Pineda
Yahoo! Image Search Results for Nikki Benz, model

Again, definitely not for everyone, and I'm not slamming anyone who doesn't care for it, but if you're a gym-goer (most of the jargon and innuendo is gym-oriented) who likes this cast including Tony Shalhoub (Monk), Ed Harris (a legend), Rob Corddry (a.k.a. the lead singer of Motley Lou from Hot Tub Time Machine), and, and, and, Ken Jeong (The Hangover) you'll crack up at this one.

Again, definitely not for everyone, and I'm not slamming anyone who doesn't care for it, but if you're a gym-goer (most of the jargon and innuendo is gym-oriented) who likes this cast including Tony Shalhoub (Monk), Ed Harris (a legend), Rob Corddry (a.k.a. the lead singer of Motley Lou from Hot Tub Time Machine), and, and, and, Ken Jeong (The Hangover) you'll crack up at this one.
We saw it Frid. night. It was good (enough) and the cast worked well together. Honestly Dwayne Johnson has managed to cross over to become a "serious" actor IMO. Will he ever do a huge hit drama...probably not but, he seems to improve with each movie...and there have been plenty for him lately.

I agree...one just has to keep perspective and enjoy it for what it is. A light hearted comedy based on a true story that gives you some laughs and a bit of entertainment.

As long as a movie doesn't bore me to sleep...it's a winner
