Take some pics of yourself and kids(if any). Also maybe a piece of silk if you have any with a small spray of your favorite perfume. When i was in this is what i loved the most. Also enjoyed reading SI mags and crossword puzzles. Of course this was when there was no internet "man i'm old".

when I went overseas and lived in the middle east, a close female friend of mine gave me a pendent to hold onto for her until I came back home. It was a pendent of St. Someone or other and was blessed by (the pope?) at the Vatican. Patron of health.
when I lived in Korea, my GF would send me letters all the time with the scent of my favorite perfume that she'd like to wear.
My mom worked at Giant Snacks and would send me beef jerky a couple times a year.
Much of the stuff we can think of he can get in the PX when he is not in the field. So try to send things that will remind him of you and of home, or something personally made by your hand.

all good to know and i just wrote down so i dont forget...
did the perfume really last that long? it takes about a week or more for him to get his packages... maybe I will like soak something in my perfume.
also were there any cool/ weird stuff you got that you were really happy to get?
~like I got him this insane t-shirt that has a speaker in it and you download sound effects to the shirt and you can press a button to make the shirt do the sound...i think he will have so much fun with this! i can already see it play out in my head lol.
I try an send something awesome and original in every package... just not one of the "betty home marker boring crafty boxes" type gal
what do you think...any obscure strange goofy things you wish you had or saw someplace and thought was cool?Last edited by SexySweetheart; 05-27-2013 at 01:30 PM.

yes, the letter smelled of perfume, the envelope contained it. Perfume, especially oil based, will last a long time on a letter.
I had a buddy send me a pic of him and some of my friends at a party one time. glued to the other side were the same group, each giving me the finger. Strange. I looked at it again a few weeks later, and pulled the two pictures apart, revealing a small smokeable object containing a green leafy substance in it.
That won't fly now adays, as this was over 30 years ago, but it surprised me.
My GF sent me a care package one time, and it had a lot of weird stuff in it. A concert T shirt (the ramones), quick letters from half a dozen people that we hung with, a bunch of snapshots (none naughty), my fav silk undies that she would wear for me, and some other stuff I can't remember right at the moment.

Depending on what he does and his down time. A football or baseball and a cpl of gloves. Being a grunt I never had that much down time but it would have been nice lol.
TR..if you are a Ramones fan, you just moved up my list

Depending where he is stationed, he can get everything he needs at the PX or mess hall. Packages are nice because it will save him the time and money of going to the PX. The goal is to let them know we think of them while they are gone, so I wouldn't worry too much about having to make it creative.
In 2003 (during the initial push before any PX was set up), my parents would send me a package twice a month with a carton of Marlboros, a Maxim/Stuff/FHM magazine, some snacks like beef jerky or Slim Jims, and a hand-written letter. The magazines got old, the snacks came and went, but I always went back and re-read those letters every night before bed.
During my next two deployments, they didn't send packages because the PX was built and I told them I didn't need anything. I ended up sending them packages with souvenirs and calling them from pay phones with the calling cards I got in country.
Now that I'm reminiscing, I kind of miss Iraq...

I sent my hubby cards and letters with my perfume. Also my pillowcase after one nights sleep with me. He lived going to bed smelling me said it made him feel closer to home. As already mentioned it depends where he is as to how limited he may be. My hubby's last deployment was in Kandahar so he was on the biggest base with a px and everything. Sent him pics of the kids and family. Jerky is great but so much sodium in them. Baby wipes body wash, tons of motorcycle mags, he had his Xbox and playstation so I'd send him games for those.
By the way, from a military spouse, thank you for standing by him. There are so many spouses who make the rest of us look bad. Our spouses chose a life defending our families and our country, and some of the scumbags who chose to marry that life screw up as soon as their husbands/wives get onto the bus to deploy.
Stay strong. Pm me anytime it gets hard on you and you need an ear...

I'm not sure if this is military wide, or if just due to being in a muslin country.
Isn't general order #1 something about no alcohol in Afghanistan/Iraq? And I think porn is not allowed either. Porn is defined very widely, and would need to pass the prudent Muslim test. So a bunch of bare skin is a no no. But the post master does not check packages/letters unless they suspect a violation. They may have a random check program too, but I'm not sure about that one.

I always make homemade beef jerky for my guys when they're deployed and trail mix that's salt and sugar free. Amazingly enough, the blankets I send over always get me sent at least a dozen requests for more. I'd also send over their other comfort foods and other items that they couldn't get over there. Audio books are also something the guys have usually enjoyed also. I also send the guys in more stressful positions a bottle of Valerian root in every package.

My brother in law is in Afghanistan and always asks for the packages of tuna. Not cans, but the tearable pouches. He can take them anywhere and eat them any time. Plus, he can trade them for other things if needed.
