    Peole just dont get it....

People are so dumb sometimes and dont realize how stupid they sound, for instance: ""Holy crap! gas is up to $3.89 a gallon, what a rip!!" which usually nets you around 20-30mpg, gets you to & from WORK, comes from 3000 miles away, goes through a huge refining process to BECOME gas. But bottled water (at say $1 a 20oz bottle) costs $6.40 a gallon....what? $6.40 a gallon fooorrrr water? which has chunks strained out and put in a plastic bottle hhhmmm Example two: "a combo meal that has a chicken sandwich, fries and a good sized soda, for $5 what a rip!, I'll go get a $5 latte instead" lets see, one will fill you up for several hours...the other one lasts for 10 minutes and you take the chance of blowing an O ring because "coffee usually opens me up" what? Example 3: "Hey, we'll take my Escalade that gets 12mpg to Starbucks a block away and over $6 mochas and a $9 turkey sandwich, we'll talk about how we just CANT seem to save any money" I could go on for days.....SMH WTF is wrong with these people?

Funny. I was recently at window tint shop and some guy with a porsche was getting his windows tinted. They quoted him $300 and he had a fit. Wouldn't have it. What a rip off he says! But finally agrees to pay. When he hands them the keys he says "Be careful with it, I just spend $500 having it detailed!".

Wow, $300 is too much and will last for years, but a $500 detail job that might last 3 days is justified. lol.

I live this every day. I work in Financial services. This happened last week. Mom and Dad + 3 young kids walk in. Parents drinking iced Latte's ($5 each) and playing on smart phones ($50 each per month). Kids playing on gameboys and sucking down soda. I ask do you have retirement accounts or life insurance. Answer "NO, I really cant afford it right now and we are in a hurry. We are on are way to Iron Man 3."

No worries, we have social security!! Live for today, dont worry about tomorrow!

Are these friends that you are talking about? No one I know has this poor thought processes going on but then again, the majority of humans on this planet are fvcking idiots.

I like your water analogy where you use a 20 oz bottle vs. using a gallon of water which costs about $0.89 at wal-mart. People complain about gas because it's something that you don't want to buy... It gets you from place to place but it typically doesn't bring any sort of entertainment to you.

More often than not, if someone has an escalade (a current year model) they don't give two shits about gas. If they are bitching about it, it's because they couldn't really afford the Escalade in the first place.

Either way, eating out is the biggest waste of money. When I was in college and 'student loan rich' I ate out all of the time and burned through so much money. I eat all of my meals at home now and the girlfriend gets so annoyed.

I just love when gas goes up .5-.10 right before a holiday weekend and our moronic local reporters head to the nearest gas station and ask, "Will this increase in gas hamper your holiday plans?". Inevitably, the person answers, "Well yes it will. With gas going up like this, we decided to just stay in town." Really??? Unless you're driving from L.A. to Mongolia, it 'ain't gonna add up to much more spending. You were never planning on going out of town, so stop being a lying putz. And, if a few extra dollars makes you cancel your vacation, you really shouldn't be going anywhere.

Well, having just paid $700 for one of my cars to be "detailed" I can say he probably had some level of paint correction done and a high end coating put on for that much money. The coating protects the paint from sun and abrasion for 6 to 12 months depending on the coating.

Also, owning a Porsche (just sold it two months ago) and other high end cars I can tell you it gets tiring when people charge more for the same part or service simply because of the car you drive. Maybe $300 is what they normally charge but it is common for a place to jack up the price when they think they can get away with it.

Sooooo, I am a car dork.

Exactly why I don't buy bottled water (saw a great documentary on that) or specialty coffee.

I have a car that gets 8mpg and the more gas goes up the less I can drive it. I have a friend that lives across town - just about 24 miles away. That is three gallons there and three gallons back. $24.

Sounds outlandish, but someone with a car that gets triple that (24mpg) is still going to pay for a gallon there and a gallon back. $8. To drive to a friends house. The price of fuel matters.

lol. Porsche's are far more difficult to work on than most vehicles, that's why it's more expensive to deal with than a GM vehicle. I've owned a couple. Need a decent radar detector? Your headlights and bumpers have to come off. For older models, ipod/satellite/rear camera integration, the entire center dash and center console have to be disassembled. Want to replace the crappy factory speakers? Rewire the car and install a new amplifier to bypass the fiber optics. And good luck finding a 3-way speaker system that is shallow enough to fit without modification. And you can't sound deaden the doors unless you take it apart into 3 pieces to avoid the window mechanism.

Paint protection is the worst on a porsche because of it's front end curves. A Lamborghini would cost much less to install paint protection. Window tint is generally expensive for that vehicle partly because on most the rear is merely impossible to tint, but also Ceramic film is required to maintain AM/FM signals, vs standard metallic or dyed films.

I'll never buy a porsche again.

    ok. reality check.

would/does anyone really pay $500 to have a car detailed? I'd say the guy was lying for the benefit of his own fragile ego?

Yeah. It's crazy what people spend. Wash, wax, clay bar, interior, etc... adds up quick and people do it. I'm obsessed with the cleanliness of my interior, but I do it myself several times a month. I just run it through a carwash once in a while. lol

You and I speak the same language on Porsches. What a pain in the ass. I got a crack in the plastic coolant overflow/filler bottle once that was going to cost, like, a million dollars to fix. No problem. When they started to pull it out the plastic tube that ran from the bottle to the back of the block cracked and replacing that part necessitated taking the entire rear of the car apart and cost, I don't know, five million dollars. I am obviously kidding but you know what I am talking about.

I was referring to paint correction, not paint protection. When they sand down the clear coat to get everything level and get rid of all the scratches, abrasions, swirls and such. It is what makes the paint look like a mirror. It really brightens the color as well. It is time intensive and costs a bit of change. If that guy paid $500 and didn't get something like that done then he got jacked.

I know what a pain paint protection is for two reasons: I have designed and supervised wraps for cars and I looked into getting of of my cars done and they just say "no, too complicated." I was surprised.

You wouldn't own another one? We will. My wife thought she could live without it but now she wants another one. She is looking at turbos from the 80s. That is her idea of a classic - she is younger than me.

Taking care of a good car has costs that most people don't think of. Nobody needs to spend money like that regularly but every once in a while a car needs some work. Removing swirls from harsh car washes, getting in the nooks and crannies, removing minor dings and scratches, conditioning leather, touching up worn driver's side seats, etc.

Gotchya, I misread that for protection. Paint correction is a pain in the ass. Agreed. The only reason I wouldn't own one is I can't stand the factory basics. I have to modify it and it's a pain in the ass to do so. I'm done with sports cars tho.

First I would be happy to pay 3.89 cause its over 4 in nyc

secondly I would never in a million years justify gas prices. We are def getting ****ed and they have the balls to charge you .20 cents more a gallon if you use a credit card. How is that even legal.

third what kind of water is 6.40 a gallon

Think of the bright side, in the UK they pay 3 times what we do per gallon!

i agree, with people jacking it up if they think you will pay for it.
And yes $300 is less then the $500 for the detail that wont last long. But $300 for tint is alot. I had my beamer the old tint pulled off, which cost extra and the whole care redone. its a 4 door and was only $200. So yea they were ripping him off

And yes $300 is less then the $500 for the detail that wont last long. But $300 for tint is alot. I had my beamer the old tint pulled off, which cost extra and the whole care redone. its a 4 door and was only $200. So yea they were ripping him off
I see that all the time and I have friends that are constantly complaining about it. I have no problem paying more for someone to do a great job, or if they take extra care, but I won't pay triple for a part.

I dunno doing the wondows in a beemer esp a 5 series is handy enough the 4 door windows are quite easy and flat, the rear window would the hardest and they probably have templates things like a porker etc with tiny awkward windows would be more labourious and the back window is a pig to do.

Porsches aren't too bad over here to get sorted they are daily drivers and lots of people can work on them but if you lack car knowledge you can be rode fairly badly for the price of parts etc.

The car I drive everyone thinks is procey to maintain you just need to know where to get and buy parts really and you are fine, take for example my car needed uppper wishbones for the car I got quoted 90 euro per wishobone from a local place found the same wishbones fromanother motor parts place at half the price.

The biggest issue with comparing fuel to things like water etc, at a per gallon price is that you don't buy 20 galof water at a time so you don't notice that water is so pricey per gal compared to petrol

Luckily the m3 is ready to go and we won't do anything but maintenance. We are friends with a guy that owns a shop that specializes in BMWs and he is the president of one of the BMW clubs. Great mechanics with a great reputation. Plus we get buddy prices. The Porsche was always expensive even with non OEM parts. With the Pantera the motor parts aren't too bad (other than being all non-stock racy bits) but everything else comes from a limited number of vendors and can get expensive. This isn't a cheap hobby, but at least it makes driving fun.

Being a mechanic and lifting go together i think change some tyres and you can sneak in a few reps each time.
