    Cycling and Cigarettes

A couple months ago I left my job for a new opportunity which has led to why I'm posting this. I now work in the oil drilling industry. I am not joking when I estimate 90%+ of the people in this industry smoke, at least where I am. I have never considered myself a smoker, but for the first time in my life will now classify myself as one. In the past I wouldn't touch the stuff but now I find myself buying cigs. It's a way of life here. Working 16 hour days can be exhausting and it seems like smokers are the only ones who get breaks which is why I'm convinced smoking is so high in this field. Granted I know smoking is terrible for me but I'm curious who does it. I am aware the majority of you likely do not, but I'm curious how many of you do (and are willing to admit it). I'm by no means a heavy smoker, I have a couple throughout the day to take a break and get me through, but just want some insight on how you smokers notice differences in your cycles. For the record, it has been 4 months since I've cycled but considering another one soon. Also, I do not make it to the gym much lately but my job could easily be considered workout all day long. I spend my days carrying huge heavy ass pipe, wrenching pipe joints together until I'm seriously gassed out, shoveling, etc. Granted, I'm not doing proper lifts and following a lifting program but I certainly am working my ass off. My job is hard labor all day long. So the main point of this is ask if anyone here cycles while working a labor job without making it to the gym more than once or twice a week and who cycles that smokes?

Wow. I'm guessing if they all had a self mutilation disorder you'd follow?

So... you smoke, barely make it to the gym and you want to know if you should cycle? That's the least of your worries. Consider a potentially early death from cigarettes before you worry about cycling.

I smoke and i've cycled i cant make a comparison because i've only cycled once but until i kick the habit i wont be cycling again. Like austin said theres no point to do it while you smoke or dont have a proper diet or trainging routine in place.

I smoked for several years while competitively swimming and playing water polo. It didn't make a huge difference, but there are better things out there for you. As for the manual labor part that's every job I've ever had lol. Dragging mail on and off trucks, laying brick, property demo, etc.
it's not healthy for you. That's for sure.
Just don't succumb to the pressure unless its something you actually want to do. That or start chewing. It's way better anyway

instead of smoking, you can take other breaks on your shift, like a snack break or a protein shake drink, or a water break..........

.....I understand the urge to go along with the others. I've done it myself before. but the smoking is something I won't or haven't done in over 25 years.

Idk how it is with OP's job, but as far as I have seen many employers are ok with someone taking a smoke break, but of you want to take that same 5min to do something healthy all the sudden shit is hitting the fan

I get the whole smoking to relieve stress, it's just like doing anything else to relieve stress, people choose different paths, but it's the reason that bugs me, because everyone else around me does it...

Exactly this is how it seems in the industry. Its like breaks aren't allowed unless its for a cig. Austinite, to be honest I know you have good information from which I read and you mean well, but you seem to always try to be a dick to whomever you look down on. Whatever helps you sleep at night brotha. And for the record, water polo has actually ranked as one of the highest physically demanding sports so you're sarcasm to chive seems unnecessary. Like I said, I know its bad for me. I accept that. Its on me, not you. Just looking for experiences. You're judgemental comments might scare members off from posting honest experiences. People aren't perfect, learn to accept that. You can be the better guy in the end, we aren't all trying to achieve what you are. Fack.

No. I wasn't trying to be a dick, just realistic... Your reasoning is asinine and I pointed it out. It's not rocket science, just use your head. You weren't using your head with the words you chose so I chose to break it down for you in laymans terms.

For crying out loud, is there a good reason? No. I was being honest. I shouldn't have to give some bullshat reason to appease all godly austinite. I know the reasoning is dumb. I stated that, thank you for repeating it, I will rest assured knowing you agree. I was looking for experiences, from which you've given none, and only proven your dickish qualities. Thank you again. *BOW*

I didn't take it as sarcastic or anything. I have played every sport except football, not just as a little kid, but as a multi sport high school athlete and to a lesser extent on the colliegate (I know that's spelled wrong lol thanks bachelors degree for nothing) level. Military experience etc. so I've done a lot of different things that require many different types and levels of conditioning and strength.
I must say water polo was the most fun but probably the hardest sport I played. For sure the most aggressive! Everything is legal when you're kicking up too many bubbles for the ref to see you throwing punches and knees underwater lol

Oh, and our conference literally had a ref with only one eye hahaha so you can just imagine the crap we used to pull

Its thick enough. Theres a difference in standing up for yourself. You can dish it out back can't take the backlash? Check your own skin before judging mine. I do appreciate your knowledge on this site, but dont take offense when I stand up for myself. I mean no harm as well.
