Warrant for my arrest - so stupid

Back in December of last year, I was pulled over for not wearing a seatbelt. I submitted the form requesting a Defensive Driving course. I never heard back from them. So 30 days later I go into the courthouse and request an update on my request. They couldn't find anything on record. She said maybe the officer hasn't turned it in yet. So I wait another month while calling several times to no avail. Finally, I go into the courthouse again in March.

The broad behind the counter said there is nothing on record and that I have no outstanding violations. She also said that since it's been over 60 days and the officer hasn't turned it in... the case would be dismissed anyways. In other words, he can't submit it. It's too late.

That gave me peace of mind. But today, 6 months later... it's 1:30am and I get ready to head to the gym, and there's a note on my door indicating an arrest warrant. What a sham. I did everything I could to follow up on this case and got fvcked because of their lack of orginization and poor record keeping.

Dang it. I'm not risking it. Staying in tonight and tomorrow I'll take a cab to the courthouse. It says if I show up there will be no arrest. Better be true!

I'll see what they say tomorrow when I provide the certified letter of request that I sent and the original ticket.

They'll probably try and talk you into paying to defer the ticket and then paying whatever late fees they decide is necessary on top of paying the fee for the warrant. That's what they did for me only difference was i took the defensive driving class, turned in my certificate but they never received the copy of my driving record after i mailed it in. After i got my warrant a few months later i called the court house before going for fear of being arrested and the lady on the phone pretty much said "we'd rather get your money than arrest you."

After paying about three times what the original speeding ticket was for they gave me receipt and said "You might want to hold on to that for a few weeks just in case you get pulled over and theirs a mix-up." Two years later I still have the receipt in my wallet.

Just absurd. Do everything u can and still get screwed. And there are no repercussions for them for not doing there job properly and causing this headache for you. I really have no trust in our government at all.

Yes I have jumped thru hoops backwards on this filing, and logging as well as computer error input by the operator .

It is an injustice and it SUCKS, it is Fvcked up , but they should and probably work with you.
I had this show up or else and show up and you're ok thing and when I showed it was all worked out. Good luck, remember they cop, judge and or clerk can only go by what the computer says. ...cm

Hopefully you kept some records such as dates, times and who you spoke with and any receipts even parking slips you might have gotten for proof you were there and did what you could. Anything you have make sure you make copies of it before taking it with you otherwise it may just disappear also.

Yep. Learned my lesson many years ago. Every call, name, letter is documented. I was actually scared they'd take my car for some reason but then I remember the ticket was in the Alpina that I sold recently.

That does suck and hopefully you get it all sorted out without an inconvenient arrest. This is indicative of the lack of organization in Govt. at every level.

Most (not all) LE agencies are electronic filing everything these days and while it seems like it SHOULD be more effective, it's not!

Yup. Lesson learned! This was when that crazy broad was driving me nuts. I had just dropped her off at Yoga (literally 2 blocks down the access road). I let her drive that car for a while, too. I thought when I sold it I'd lose some bad luck. Still haunting me! Oh well, I'll get it sorted out.

Oh, I'm sure they knocked. My hours have been out of whack. I'm a night owl now. I was sleeping in the morning when they came by.

Glad they didn't kick the door in...lol.
Worst night ever-18 and spent 5 hours in jail because I didn't pay a ticket. Only place to sit was next to the toilet. Kept my head down. Never again. But, this won't happen to you because of the fact that you've documented everything. Good call.

I once had a speeding ticket that was reduced to a parking ticket. I paid the attorney and all was well.

Several years later I was pulled over, informed I had a warrant and was handcuffed. I said there must be a mistake because I haven't had a ticket in years. He told me the date and I told him it was reduced to parking and taken care of my an attorney. Turns out there was a small fine that wasn't paid but I had never received a singe piece of mail about a past due amount and I never received a letter saying a warrant was issued (they do that to encourage payment). In three years the government had never contacted me.

I had a friend come get my car so it wouldn't be towed and called my wife. Despite her posting bail and paying all fees almost immediately they didn't release me until 8:00 am the next morning when they do their big release. 15 hours in a holding cell. For a $50 parking ticket.

By the time they added fees it was hundreds of dollars. More than the speeding ticket was that I got it reduced from. All because they suck at mail and record keeping.

^^^...and like the IRS, there's not much you can do because they're always right<rolls eyes>.

Edit: so no POs get defensive...lol...they are doing their jobs. It's the record-keeping that can cause undue stress-like my paid exp. reg fine that was paid, but still brought in for a nice 5 hr visit.

I'd tell them to shove the warrant up their ass! And i'd go to the courthouse and say it! They have nothing better to do? They'll just ask for money anyway. not like they're actually going to arrest you. If they do, i'd move as soon as soon as i could! Go to real city w/ real crime. That little shit doesn't even get you pulled over down here.

    Messed up.

All good. I went in with all my documentation. Spoke to a prosecutor who seemed very reasonable. I showed him everything I had and proof of my efforts. Even the lady behind the counter verified that I was there several times and she could not find record of it.

Case dropped - Now I'll carry this letter with me for next 30 years in case someone attempts to arrest me. Really a surprising outcome. The cop in fact did submit the paperwork late. The warrant popped up because of the original date I guess.
