Is it really worth it to get your Personal Trainer's Certification?

Been kicking this around for a couple of weeks. Just a thought. Wanted to see what some opinions were on this. There might be money to be made doing what you love?

I'm thinking it's a "check list" kind of a thing...for those who care about checklists.

For example, say someone is looking for a personal trainer, they might compare two potential options like this:

    Trainer Option 1
    _____________________

    Is Fit? Check
    Knowledgeable about diet? Check
Met other clients and they speak highly of trainer? Check
Offered me complimentary session or group session workout? Check
Other thing #1 I care about? Check
Other thing #2 I care about? Check
    Has a certification? Check

    Trainer Option 2
    _____________________

    Is Fit? Check
    Knowledgeable about diet? Check
Met other clients and they speak highly of trainer? Check
Offered me complimentary session or group session workout? Check
Other thing #1 I care about? Check
Other thing #2 I care about? Check
    Has a certification? No

And with that in mind, the decision might still probably be made on some other or intangible factor.

So, it's probably low on a checklist of things, but a few times out of some unknown number, it might tip the scales in a decision and add a client or two to your portfolio.

Another view might be that, if you are going to be a pro trainer, why wouldn't you just pick a cert and get one? If nothing else, some might view it as an indication you are *more* serious about what you do than if you don't carry one. Especially if you are just starting out.

Most places will not let you work unless you have a cert. So unless you are doing in home training your going to need it. Cause its hard to start from scratch doing in home

I just talked to a trainer today in the Lifetime Fitness. Higher end club and he says the average guys there make 30-35K. A good one can work up to 50. It's all about always being there, looking the part, and being personable to get the client base. That's a higher end club though, can't imagine the crappy pay people make at smaller local gyms

It depends Chad on how far along you are already and if it was a personal goal. If it was then by all means go for it. It might help down the road when you feel little frustrated in life when you can look up at the certification and know you accomplished something good and give you the motivation to follow up on another goal.. Just Sayin...

well several things have came to mind. I don't make shit for money now so im not worried about the money. Id rather do what I loved and make not much, just enough to get by on, than make a lot and hate my job.

The time and money to put into the test to purchase and pass it is a concern

Getting in really good shape with my current schedule would be hard nut not impossible. I would have to have at least decent abs to be confident enough so its gonna take a while because I dont wanna drop anymore weight and maybe a real cycle this time to get me where I want to be. I really want to get in super good shape first before proceeding with it. What sparked the initial drive to maybe do this was some of the folks were asking me about my training and what I was doing and I kinda liked it tbh. Well see if I can get in shape. Its gonna be hard to do by myself seeing how my spouse hats BB and any kind of "gear". My training partner also skipped out on me too. Lone wolf for now.

the most i've been paid is $100 hr 2x week for 6 months, that was 1 client and i paid her membership dues out of that.. the real trick is to find a gym that will for a fee let you bring all the clients you want into the facility..

we have several here that will do so on a monthly fee, or as needed basis.. private equipped gyms

the real deal with that is you need to find and keep the client, they don't care about certs, but they do care about liability insurance..

as a part time thing it's cool..

@op. I think it's a tough road for any PT. sooo many bad ones. I think all things are possible if you have passion for ppl and luv what you do and look the part and get the right location and get the right clients....
