Any guitar players in the house??
It's been soooooo long since I've played and getting the itch again. Of course, stupid me got rid of my guitar many moons ago. I'm looking for a 12 string acoustic. I've been out of the scene so long and it seems alot of these guitars are quite cheaper than the ones back in the day. Can you really get a decent 12 string for $500 ?? or will I be disappointed?
Share your thoughts please. It's always been like riding a bike, once I get back into it, it all comes back. But it's been at least a decade so I don't want anything too fancy.~ PLEASE DO NOT ASK FOR SOURCE CHECKS ~

You can get an alright one for about $500. I mean it isn't going to be anything spectacular. Your best bet would be to hit up the pawn shops in your area and see if you can snag like a high end Takamine or a low end Taylor for around $500. You're in Texas, so you should have a pretty good selection at those shops.
If you want to drop some serious coin on a quality custom-made guitar, I know a few luthiers that do fantastic work in the Los Angeles area.Last edited by Honkey_Kong; 08-23-2013 at 04:10 AM.

Thanks HK. Forgot about pawn shops. Sure beats dealing with folks on craigslist. I think I know what I'll be doing tomorrow.

I have a guitar but never took the time to learn.
What is the way to get started?
Buy a book, YouTube, or go get lessons?

I would go for a few lessons just to get started, after that you can do it by yourself. If you know the basics you can go from there.I taught myself to play and I can tell you, I would have saved a lot of time if I just got someone to teach me.
@ aust, yea can buy a pretty decent 12string guitar for not to much. But look around, you wil find some good deals online also.

Been playing for years. Play mostly acoustic. You know you have to get at least a half decent 12 string of you'll spend all your time tuning the damn thing!

Dang! Did not know you played. Awesome. Yeah I remember my last one (about a decade ago) was a couple grand. Makes me cringe when I see them for $400. Certainly get what you pay for with guitars. It would be a different case for a beginner, anything would do. But I'm no pro either. I'm going in about an hour. If I come home with something I'll post a pic!

I've been playing for over 30 years. Started when I was ten. Retired from the industry in the mid 90's. That's cool you play too!
Sure you can get a decent one for under $500 but for me it was never about price, but rather how it felt in my hands and how I could play it. Its a 'connection' thing for me. Some guitars I just can't play worth a damn. Others I can play nearly anything on.
I recommend hitting some pawn shops and guitar shops and just find something that feels nice in your hands and sounds nice to you that is within your price range.
My all time favorite guitar that I still play everyday (albeit for only a few minutes a day sometimes) I got used in the early 80's. it was a 'cheap' Kramer, built like a tank and made of good materials, but it smokes all of my fancy guitars that are collecting dust (at least in my hands) and it has seen many shows and studios. Been refretted 3 times!
Best of luck!!

Here it is. When I got there I messed around with a few different guitars, from cheap to expensive. I quickly realised how rusty I am. lol. And the 12 string was nice but man it's pricey. So I just ended up getting a cheap fender to play with. If I ever get back into it like I was in the past, I can always sell this and upgrade. My skills just aren't there right now for an expensive guitar.

Sweet.. Glad you're getting back into it. I play a little, and my older daughter is pretty good. We have a couple acoustics and electrics. We just got some new cakewalk software as well that we need to learn how to use. I used to sit around for hours, get my head right and play til my fingers fell off.
Check out and subscribe (if you like him) to Martyzsongs on YouTube. I found him really helpful getting the 'fundamentals' back. His website is : guitar jamz dot com..

Good for you Austin. The fender acoustics have a bit of a "tinney sound" that I actually like. Nice to see you getting back in the swing man!

ive played guitar in bands for the about 20 yrs...some original (cut a few albums, one with a song featuring frank hannon from the 80's and 90's band Tesla) that was the crown jewel of my music "career"....the last 5yrs I was in music professionally doing the cover band thing...I don't know if anyone remembers the band 6gig(they had a hit song called "hit the ground" but steve m from that band did the cover thing with me...probably the most fun ive had in music to play with other well established incredible musicians like him...

this is why I don't bother with cheapies! excellent point Jimmy!
Hey Austinite, I just got into guitar myself, got me a Stratocaster made in USA, worth about 3.5k new but got it for $1,300. practically new. I know you got one but keep looking, I am sure you'll come across a great deal. I got mine on eBay from a guy who barely touched it! I'm into electric blues, love the sound, licks and the music.

Very cool bass. Yeah I'm going to bring my skills back to life with this thing and if the force is with me, I'll be all over a nice guitar.~ PLEASE DO NOT ASK FOR SOURCE CHECKS ~

something I tried doing...I just never was worth a shit at it. I liked electric a lot better though. Accoustic was always harder to play for me. Since I sucked so bad I could cover some of it up with the reverb from my electric amp. I just don't have the genetics for it

I used to be like that where I thought it was way harder to play acoustic. But then I went to college and studied classical guitar. I ended up spending all my guitar time playing classical and really didn't do much with the electrics. Now I still play a little electric every now and then, but a guitar doesn't feel well if it's not spread as wide as a classical guitar is.
But if you want to get better at playing guitar, practice ear training. 99% of playing guitar is all in your ear's ability.
