Thread: Different Perspective...

  1. #1

    Different Perspective...

Take it for what it's worth...

So people AUTOMATICALLY ASSUME PhD smart...

But what makes them smart? I guess specializing in a certain subject makes you smart? Well, I don't think so...It's just dedication

People LOVE this term (Especially girls) "He's a Doctor"....Great, but does it hold any essence?

My uncle who never graduated from high school can build a house from the ground up....Can a "Doctor" do that?

No, a doctor can't do that...So does that mean the doctor is stupid because he doesn't know how to build a house?

No, just like it doesn't make my uncle stupid because he doesn't know how to perform surgery....They just specialized in different areas...

Hypothetically, they are the same...Specializing in a certain area over many years.....

Smart is not smart..It is how you PERCEIVE it....

Smart, by definition, has more to do with the quickness of how one intelligently responds. It is not defined to a specific topic or every topic as a whole.

The words you're looking for is Genius or Mastermind.

    Correct to a point.....

If the doctor chose to want to build houses he probably is smart enough to learn. He has the smarts to become a doctor...... Not many actually do.

If your uncle (only an example, one you gave) wanted to become a doctor - would his grades have been good enough to get into med school?
Stay in and pass med school?

Being a doctor isn't just a learned trade...... I've been in medical for 10 years. The company folded and I had to find work. Got into the electrical field and didn't know a damn thing about it. It was a trade I could learn. I can't just decide to be a doctor and go an do it. I can TRY to but idunno if I can hack med school.

Don't confuse smart with skilled. Your uncle may have the skill to build a house but may be dumb as a post.

First off, let me tell you fellas this...MOST so called "Certified PhD" doctors suck to the HIGHEST extent....

Just like in ANY trade...You have bad, semi good, great and BEST..Majority of doctors are HORRIBLE doctors....That's why the best of the best athletes just don't go down the street to Joe Schmo...

And actually, I do BELIEVE most people who are smart can EASILY get a doctorate degree...Believe me, you can't be stupid and know how to build a house from the ground up....Plumbing, electrical, foundation..It never ends...

They learn just as much as anyone else..Just different subjects....

I disagree whole heartedly. Learning a skill (building) amounts to training a pet. A trained monkey (if they had opposable thumbs) could be taught to build a house or do ANY skilled labor job. It doesn't require any real thought after you have been trained to carry out the skill.

OKAY, just take ONE class on electrical engineering and tell me how much you get out of that...Yeah, a monkey..Try to teach them that lol..Hope you're joking lol...

And of course that's just one small MINOR aspect of building a house...Much deeper...

Electrical engineering is NOT being an electrician. Its like saying a chiropractor is a neurosurgeon lol. I have a good friend who is a fantastic home builder and skilled TRADESMAN. I am confident he wouldn't qualify for the space program!

You sir have definetly never built a house in your life. To know how to do all the plumping, electrical, framing + forming, finishing, insulating, sound proofing, have everything to code, follow city bylaws, go through the 7 building inspections, lay out the land and to Forsee potential future problems cannot be done by a fvcking monkey..

Can you run a camera off of a cat5e wire? If so - is there a maximum length for the wire? A recommended length?

You have a tv in the first floor living room but your cable box is 100ft away in the rack in the basement. What do you need to get the tv to work?

    Let's switch to medical......

I'm broaching a femur of an 87yr old female. I have a manual broach and handle and a pneumatic one made by omni-life science. Which should I use?

What do I do if the doctor fractures the femur?

I know the answer to each of those...... None of this is beyond a doctors skill set obviously. I picked up the low voltage electrical shit in a matter of weeks. It took me years to understand the medical stuff.

Not just anyone can become a doctor...... If that was the case then everyone would be a doctor. Or an engineer...... Or a physicist.

My point is...... A doctor can learn to drive a truck but a truck driver can't learn to be a doctor. It's not that simple.

All of these things can be learned by a majority of the population. I have learned to do concrete, roof homes, drywall and some plumbing by doing the work for a short time. Do you think a cpl years OJT would make you a cardiologist?

But my point...Have you done it? Do you care about it? No, you don't care about it...Man, if I could tell you how many dip shit people I met that got their PhD in Medical I would cry for the public and I do...

There is SO many morons that go international AKA SWEDEN, INDIA to get their PhD and then come back to the US...

My true point here...If anyone has more then just one chemical reaction going on in their brain they can do anything they want...

To believe everyone has the same learning capabilities and same brain function is like saying everyone has the same physical potential. Genetics dictates brain function and limitations to a degree, just as they effect ones ability to grow.

For someone who "knows so much" you really don't seem to know much about anything!

It's about perception again...When I say anyone who just has one chemical reaction going on in their brain you perceive it different then what I mean...

When I say that I'm not just talking about average joe....I'm talking about someone who is actually somewhat smart...

And no, your brain is just like any other organ...You can not only GROW but you can increase brain function and also become smart as well..

I watched a very interesting TV showed asking the question, how to we gauge/measure intelligence? By the end of the show they were right back where they started from with no answer.

A lot of people are "smarter" than the title or career they hold, but maybe they never had the funding to go to Graduate/Medical/Law school?

I bet there are people out there who would make terrific doctors and lawyers, but didn't have the money, and didn't want to bury themselves in even more debt....

Construction work (building/finishing houses) takes a ton of skill and would take years to grasp. How much "skill" or "learning" does bartending, bouncing, or waiting tables take? Not very much....

Intelligence is the ability to learn, in my opinion...

People don't generally get doctorates in medicine (in fact, I have never seen it, but hey, saying never invites someone to cite a medical school in Bangladesh or something). A medical degree is a professional degree (a few years of school and a lot of practical training in a couple more years). People who get doctorates conferred have a few years of school, and a lot of research and independent learning, culminating in an original contribution to the body of knowledge in their field (this is especially true in scientific fields).

I think ability to learn is a very important part of intelligence, but I wonder if the capacity to see patterns isn't more central than learning.

Well I'm thinking your simply an idiot and not far enough removed from the primate family to understand that anyone can be taught a trade skill (some quicker than others) but not everyone has the ability to be highly intelligent.

You think because you can frame a house you are as smart as Steven Hawking? Get fukn real! The END!

This thread started with the op talking about his uncle building a house from the ground up..you say a monkey can be trained to do it which is bullshit and I calle you out on it. Now your being a defensive little bitch! I never said anything about building houses vs hawking. I said your an idiot for thinking a monkey can build a house from the ground up and thats it! It's like arguing with a chick on her period

Seriously? I think maybe the term "monkey" is being read way to literal.

Are you ignorant enough to believe my reference to monkeys was literal? My point is, ANYONE, with enough time, can be taught a skilled trade. Not anyone can be "smart". From the sounds of things, you are living proof of my point.

I know a number of great contractors and have worked for several. As much as I admire their abilities, I would not rank them anywhere near the IQ of a Nuclear Physicist.

The OP suggested that someone who can learn a trade is as "smart as a PHD. Really????
