    Bodybuilding and napolean complex

i was doing some thinking and wondered what the average heights of the pro bodybuilders are? i know they have a reputation of being short so i am gonna check and post some of them here:

    wikipedia:

    Cutler:
    Personal info
    Born August 3, 1973 (age 40)
    Sterling, Massachusetts
    Height 5 ft 9 in (1.75 m)
    Weight

Off season: 310 lb (140 kg
    Coleman:
    Nickname Ronnie Coleman

    Bastrop, Louisiana, U.S.
    Height 5 ft 11 in (1.80 m)
Weight Contest: 297 pounds (135 kg)

    kai greene:
    born July 12, 1975 (age 38)
    Brooklyn, New York
    Height 5 ft 8 in (1.73 m)
    Weight (offseason) 280-300 (on-season) 245-250 lbs
    dorian yates:

Walmley, Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands, England
    Height 5 ft 9.5 in (1.77 m)
    Weight 110–132kg (235–290lb)
    lou ferrigno:
    Height 6 ft 5 in (1.96 m)[5][8]
    Weight 285 lb (130 kg) (1975)[5]
<<-- DAMN I DIDNT REALIZE THAT!

    lee haney:
    Height: 5’11½” / 181 cm.
Off Season Weight: 260 lbs / 118 kg.
    Competition Weight: 248 lbs / 112 kg.
<<--- notice off season weight and comp weight! (only 12 lbs)

    marcus ruhl:
    Height: 1.78 m (5 ft 10 in)[1]
Off Season Weight: 143–146 kg (320–320 lb)
Competition Weight: 124–128 kg (270–280 lb)
Arm Size: 60 cm (24 in) (contest)
Leg Size: 84 cm (33 in) (contest)
Waist Size: 96 cm (38 in)
Chest size: 153 cm (60 in)
    <<---- notice his waist sizE!!!

    phil heath:
    Full Name: Phillip Jerrod Heath
Born: December 18, 1979, Seattle, WA
    Height: 5’9"
    Competition Weight: 250 lbs
    Off-Season Weight: 280 lbs -
    arnold:
    Height: 6'2
    Off Season Weight: 250 lbs.
    Competition Weight: 235 lbs

so with all that in mind, im curious to what everyone thinks about height and bodybuilding? is it an overcompensation for lack of height? i suppose subconsciously it could be. maybe here in a little while i will check other stuff like waist size of old vs new and other stats..

feel free to add to this list as it is far from complete

for the record i am 5'9"

Wow, Ferrigno was way taller than I thought too! Wonder if anybody tried to get him to play basketball when he was younger?

Oh yeah, 5' 9" and I never weighed much so maybe there is something to it.

I'm just under 5'10 said the guy who is 5'9. All those guys seem pretty close to average. It does seem like the same amount of muscle looks better on a guy that is 5'8 than what it looks like on a man that is 6'4. For that reason, it may seem easier for a smaller guy to look huge.

^^^ I believe basically the same. Stockier/shorter framed people tend to look "bigger" and more muscular. Add a few inches to height and that same amount of muscle looks to be less. Of course there are exceptions to the rule but I believe for the most part it is true.

Makes us "taller" people have to work that much harder but that's okay

I'm 6'1 and have looked skinny my whole life. It's harder to get that all around thick look when your taller but when you achieve a decently big size..... You look monstrous next to a short guy

i am 5-9 too, and when i first read Cuttler's height on wiki, i was really excited, thinking that if i am as tall as him, and if i really work at it, i can look as big as him too?!?!

^^im curious though, it seems to me a frame would be a frame. take me for instance: im 5'9" and weigh 206lbs @15%bf = 175lbs LBM

so 175/69 (my height in inches) = 2.536 lbs LBM per inch

take a guy 6'5" who has my exact build thatd be:

    77 x 2.536 = 195lbs LBM

    195 x 1.15 = 224lbs

hmm... i see ur point. at 206lbs and 69" i am pretty stocky.. BUT a 77" tall guy weighing 224 would look very thin.. thats weird..

Im almost 6'3, and yes it is hard to fill out the frame. But hey, im getting closer.

Oh an Louie is 6 '5. and his contest weight in "pumping iron" was around 260-265.
He competed again in the master's Olympia on the upper end of 290lb. Lou was no joke, especially he used to be a skinny kid growing up, he worked his ass off.

I personally think weight/height are just numbers. If you look good it doesn't matter what height/weight you gotta be. Like someone would tell me "hey, you need to be at least 250 lean before you will look big" that's just nonsense imo. I think the smaller frame you/bone structure you have and the more mass you can put on that small frame the better you are going to look.

It's no surprise to me that the shorter guys mostly are the Olympia winners. I think Ronnie was the tallest after Arnold. But it wouldn't really matter how tall Ronnie was he was beyond a freak.

I'm 6' and almost 230 but I don't look that big. a guy of 5'9 at 230 is massive. I think it was Steve Reeves who said one has to add 10lbs of lbm for every inch below 6' to remain aesthetic, but 15lbs for every inch if one is over 6' (from some baseline, I think 200lbs at 6'). I'm a believer. The leverage factor is a bitch, too. 5'5 squatting 500 is probably doing 30% of the work 6'5 lou has to do to move the same through an equal ROM.

I knew a pro that trained in my gym for about 5 years. His bio stated he was 5'10, but he was obviously around 5'8. He said that most everyone in the game adds and inch or two to their stats. He was no exception...

My avi I weigh 225 but at 6' 4" it doesn't look massive. I get guys in the gym saying I'm huge and I guess next next to someone under 6" I do. But I don't look in the mirror and see a big guy. My ideal in Terry Crews 6' 4" 235 at 8% bf.

Oh and all these comparisons are tainted by the company you keep. When I played ball I was tipping the scales at 250. Yeah I felt I was a damn good size but compared to D-linemen at 290 or O-line well over 300 and all of them taller than me it makes you not feel so hulking. I was a tight-end and when I made it into the secondary I was a monster amongst the d-backs. It was easier to run them over then go around them. lol But there was always a middle linebacker waiting for my crossing route to blow me the hell up. We were always about the same size.

    Jeez...... Sounds like myself lol.

What I hated worse as a tight end was running 5 yards past the line backers..... Infront of the safety. Turn and wait for that ball to hit ur fingers. The second it touches...... That little prick has his shoulder burried into your ribs.

    for shits and giggles:

    Coleman:
    Nickname Ronnie Coleman
    Born May 13, 1964 (age 49)

    Height 5 ft 11 in (1.80 m)
Weight Contest: 297 pounds (135 kg)
Off season: 330 pounds (150 kg)

contest weight 297lbs and lets assume 4% body fat

    297 x .96 = 285.12 lbs LBM

    285 x 15 = 4276cals (rough maintenance) LMAO!!! holy shit!

damn I thought lou was 295 on stage at the masters

Arnold was supposedly somewhere between 5 foot 9 and 5 foot 11. He consistently wore platform shoes to boost his height and also exaggerated the numbers. He was obviously way bigger than 6 foot 2 at 235 pounds.

I wa following that o in 94 and I remember at the time he was billed as 315 the day of the contest. 18years later he himself says 325. Either way, I've never seen an olympia showing where a competitor was in peak form and conditioning at over 300lbs. That's unreal. Imagine of he had the thickness of ronny. He'd probably be 350lbs in o condition. Massive.

I've often thought this hypothesis is at least partially tries, 405 . Short guys trying to compensate for lack of vertical size by gaining horizontal mass.
