Close to home, Thyphoon Haiyan
I'm sure most of you have heard about Thyphoon Haiyan.
This did not hit or devistate my wife's province and non of her immediate family were affected but I am sure as time goes on we will hear about relatives who have lost everything as well as family members.
I have been to some of these places that were hit hard and now they look like a war zone or worse. I have visited churches, monuments and tourist attractions that were 100s of years old that are now gone as well as a good chunk of future tourism.
They are estimating well over 10,000 people have been killed and I'm sure the number will rise. The Joint Typhoon Warning Center, however, said that Yolanda packed maximum sustained winds of 314 kph (195 mph) and gusts of up to 378 kph (235 mph).
Typhoon Pablo that hit last December did hit my wifes province directly. Their house survived better than most but not by much and is still under repair.
These are actual pictures of my inlaws house after typhoon Palbo.
These pictures in the link below are from Typhoon Haiyan just a couple of days ago and it looks like another one is headed their way.

Lovbyts...same boat as you. Fiance and her family are from there. But it did nit devastate their area. I thought I was big enough that it covered the entire country. I was scared for her and family
was actually going to send you a pm....I thought you lived there still honestly. Was just thinking about it yesterday.Last edited by Sfla80; 11-11-2013 at 05:07 AM.

Yeah they say it covered 300 sq miles and was 3.5x stronger than Katrina if that helps put it into perspective for anyone.
Thanks for the thoughts. I wish I could take off work for a month or 2 and go help. i wish when I was younger I would have joined the National Guard or something. I hope when we move/retire there I can do more to help the locals be more prosperous.
For now all I/we can do is what we can. I am letting the wife do what she feels she needs to and donating to the Philippines Red Cross hoping the money goes to do some good.
Warning, this photo is not for the weak of heart but I hope it touches everyone's. There are 1000s similar tragedies such as this.

Oh my god...
I'm glad to hear your families are ok but extremely sorry to see all the devastation and death as a result of this massive typhoon.
Lovbyts do you line in the states? What are your in-laws going to do, stay there and repair their house or will they have to relocate?

Yes I'm in the states. We/I plan on moving there (retiring) in 10-15 years.
In-laws are still rebuilding from the Typhoon last December but most of the family, mother, 3 sisters are in the city now about 100 miles away from their province/home and her father and brother are working on the home repairs.

What a tragedy! That picture of (I think) dad with his kids is sad beyond belief. I can not imagine the horror they, and others went/are going thru. Glad the family is ok.

Good to hear. I bet she will hear about some cousin or relative that has been affected or loss of life though eventually. Same here.
It's really going to do a lot of long term damage to many people also due to decline in tourism. A lot of OLD churches from 15 & 1600s were destroyed from the Earthquake in October and now this.
This is a picture of a church I visited a couple of years ago there. It was full of meuseum type artifacts from when Magellan was there in the 1500s. It was heavily damaged in the earthquake last October and I imagine a lot more now.

Ive been looking into the charity programs out there a bit lately again and I have seen similar statistics to this before but I'm still amazed how the big top charities are still getting away with this stuff. There are a lot of smaller ones who do the same or worse with zero going to the groups they claim to help.
There are still a lot of people who are in need.
